Hello there,

I am fairly new to the custom pc scene.

I have recently bought a custom pre-built pc.

Here are the specs:

amd.fx-8350 eight-core 4.00ghz
aus m5a78l-m plus/usb3
gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb
16gb ddr3 ram
500gb sata hhd
corsair cx600 psu

I know this isn't the best rig etc.

But for me this is the perfect start, in a while I shall build a monster after watching all of Mr. Linus videos that will be next year or so

I am having an issue which I shall refer to as a bottleneck.

Installing games and unzipping files and installing things, in general, seem to take a while which I hope I can address with a quick component switchover.

I believe its the storage device. I was thinking about switching to a solid state hard drive but I would like some advice from you lovely people.

Ps, When I install games the Task manager shows the hard drive is working at full capacity( I have attached a screenshot). this is why I think the hard drive is causing my issue but again and advice would go greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yup, hard drives are super slow compared to SSDs. You could get a 500GB SSD for a somewhat decent price and use a free program like EaseUS to clone your drive onto it.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Definitely get an SSD. Even 240GB ones are as cheap as 35-40 euro.

Yeah you can probably hear the thing too.

Also make sure to quote people so they can see your responses. Welcome!

the hard drive definitely causes the issues. don't get a sshd, it barely improves speeds versus a regular one. just get a proper sata ssd.

a slow hard disk will give you an "okay" computing experience, it does not affect gameplay much other than load times

if u are on a tight budget and SSD cannot be fit into it, it's fine if you use a spinning hard disk

if you have some cash to spare, i recommend u grab a 240gb SSD and clone your system drive onto it with a backup software (such as aomei backupper)

an SSD wont help much in games, but it will give you a more responsive system experience (and probably faster game installation too)

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Define 'more responsive', because a typical harddisk has 4KQ1T1 speeds of 0.6MB Read and 1.1MB Write, while a good SSD like the 860 EVO has speeds of 50MB Read and 120MB Write, so it's between 80-100x more speedy as a boot drive than a HDD.

Ryzen 7 3700X / 16GB RAM / Optane SSD / GTX 1650 / Solus Linux

lower launch time for softwares would be a typical example

numbers doesnt reflect true experience, an average user cant tell the difference between SATA SSD and NVME SSD, but the difference between SATA SSD and a typical HDD is much more noticeable

Hey guys thanks for the amazing response, I'm going to be getting an SSD, in the meanwhile how does this screenshot look in terms of the symptoms I'm experiencing (slow unzipping of files, creating bootable media and slow installation of some programs). I just wanted to make sure there isn't something else in terms of hardware.
