What's the best ways to make sure nonspammy emails don't end up in spam? No pictures or links... other than that, whats the current wisdom on the topic?

What do you mean no pictures or links ?    It's almost impossible to prevent spam 100%   If you have something like Outlook, it has advanced features to setup rules.

 

Not sure what the future holds for M$ products, but I'm still using programs that are over 15 years old.
