RAM CL vs Ghz?

Hi peeps

Hopefully this isn't too technical for me to understand the answer to, planning a build for a friend:

 

For gaming (FPS and RTS mostly) @1080p and 1440p respectively
On 2700X and 8700k respectively
With a 2070 GPU

Planning 16GB ram: Go for 2666 CL15 or 3000 CL16?
Or something completly different?

3000 cl16 and try lowering it to cl15 i would say

buy 3000 CL16, oc to 3600 CL18 or something similar.

3000 cl16, is going to have slightly lower latency than the 2666 cl15

Personally I'd go for 3200 as that seems to be the sweet spot before performance improvements become minimal.

I upgraded from 2400 to 3200 and the difference in performance was astonishing.  My frame rates suddenly were dramatically more stable.

 

Honestly, not going to bother to worry about timings as its a real PITA finding out what is stable and I do not believe the time taken is worth the small improvement.

3000MHz CL16 of course. You can get a rough idea on memory performance by dividing frequency with tCL, the larger the number the better. If the number's the same, then the one with the higher frequency wins.
