FP only has 3 creators atm afaik

Floatplane is still in Alpha state and is invite only. Currently the only content creators available is Tech Deals, LTT, and Bitwit.

I thought it was always going to be like an invite only deal?

Right now it is invite only. In the future once its up fully, they may open it up more, but I doubt it will end up like YT where anyone and everyone can join. I do see in the distant future they would open it up for people to apply to be a creator on the platform so they still have to vet them and make sure its what they want on the platform.

Not quite. Right now its easier to test things when creators and their main audience are already tech oriented. Think if some lifestyle vlogger would come there with their audience of teens who know only tech from Apple. Any small problem and there wouldn't be end of crying.
