Question about Upgrading CPU or GPU

Go to solution Solved by KarathKasun,

1060 should be fine.  The lack of HT means that some games will stutter a bit, but otherwise it will be fine with the 2500.

I have an old system with an i5 2500 and 8 GB of RAM paired up with a GTX 1050, at home.
I was going to hook it up to TV to do around 60 FPS @ 1080p console-like gaming.
I was wondering whether I should upgrade the GTX 1050 ti to a used GTX 1060 6 GB or try finding a used CPU + MOBO to get the most increase in the FPS for the money I'm gonna spend?
How severe would be the CPU bottleneck with a GTX 1060 6 GB and an i5 2500?
Appreciate any help!

1060 is a bad buy atm. grab an RX 580 which is a whole lot better value and cheaper (edit: pick up the PSU i mentioned if the PSU is a old or bad one)

it should be a good combo.

the best solution for the best experience would be finding a used Dell Optiplex for about 150$ with a 4th gen core i7. spend 50$ on a CX550 (2017) Power supply from Corsair. and then about 80$ for an R9 290x on the used market. or Fury/980ti for around 90$ if you are lucky

finally pick up a 120Gb SSD for 20$ for the OS if you dont allready have that

4th gen i7 systems are generally not that cheap yet.  $150 is about what you will find an i7 2600/3770 system for.

No real point, OP can get a 2600 for ~90 and drop it in their current system.  2600 and 3770 are not much different performance wise.

Did you try hocking the 1050ti up on your TV? It might just be fine for 1080p @60Hz in most games

older titles, yes. current and a bit older titles you need to turn down the dials a bit.

at that point he can also just skip that and grab a new PSU and a R9 Fury or 290x depending on what the local market offers

Or just get a brand new RX 570 for ~$130.  Less power, similar performance, no questionable used parts.

proabably needs a new PSU anyway. so while that is an option. the Fury cards will offer more if he can find them or the 980ti cards.

im more liberal when it comes to used components. but i really understand why people preffer new components

I am usually an advocate for used parts, but cards that generally run hot can be terrible used buys (much faster cap aging).  This is especially true for any card that was popular for mining.

indeed. only buy from buyers who openly admit them being miningcards. mining 290x cards should be really cheap. 80$ is about what a regular card goes for and not mining.

hot card do have a greater chance of failing, though it happens quite rarely from what ive seen.

Thanks for the response!
So there would be some bottleneck, btw?

Yeah, a 1060 would have a bit of room to grow with a faster CPU.  If you get something like an E3-1280 or i7 2700 you would be at just about the perfect balance between CPU and GPU AFAIK.
