PC to TV audio

I want to play a movie from my PC to the TV via HDMI 1.4 cable. I'm having a problem with downmixing though. My TV is quite old and cheap model and it doesn't have proper downmixing software in it. My question is, can I set that my PC downmix the movie from surround to stereo? Will that fix my problem?

Configure the speakers as stereo in Windows, that will downmix the audio to stereo.

I suppose I do that here? Also, doesn't the program I'll watch my movies from (VLC) affect it anyhow?

Not really, the Windows output settings get the final say.

 

If you still have issues, you can move on to VLC settings.
