Plug it on a different computer. Does it work? Did you try a different cable?

If the above doesn't help. I assume you got those standard external HDD's, so it has USB only. The usual problem with USB external HDD is that the SATA to USB converter are the cheapest quality ever, and break easily. Simply open the external HDD case, and plug the HDD directly in your computer. Problem will be solved (unless the HDD crashed, or broke).

Or you can send it under warranty, but I am don't think they recover or transfer your data. You'll just get a new one. Call to know.
