File Syncing

So I've seen a million different ways that people suggest doing it so I'm just asking around to see if anyone has done it themselves and what they recommend.

 

I want to have specific files automatically sync based on date between my desktop and my laptop and eventually my Linux NAS that I am in the process of making. Also preferably not write entirely over ie keeping a most recent copy just encase something goes wrong. I know Linus has mentioned that they do something similar for their ingest and editing. I could do it manually but I just want to automate the process either with a minimal amount of coding/scheduling or a safe trusted software that has been used and proven.
