After buying my WCP-300 aka LG's "puck" wireless charger, I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever live without wireless charging. That's an exaggeration, obviously, but it's so convenient and a nice luxury that you begin to take for granted. Today, I've began to wonder why nobody's:

  1. implemented wireless charging in ultrabooks
  2. created a sleeve/case for tablets and ultrabooks

Wireless charging, to my knowledge, (the conductors or w/e they're called) are so easy and inexpensive to implement. Thoughts anyone? I can't be the only one who'd like to see this.

PS: I'm considering sending ASUS a brief email explaining how huge of a fan I am of their hardware and that they need to implement this in their devices and accessories now. I doubt anyone would read it but I'd feel a lot better after typing and sending it lol.

I don't see it happening soon. There may be some problem of the about of the power being transferred.(45-65W)

Interesting

I know it can't possibly be rocket science though... Then again I'm not an electrical engineer so I don't know the answer.

Can anyone else confirm this?

If you see the power brick for a phone and then compare it to a phone's brick you will see the difference.

As stupid as this sounds I've never thought of that haha.

As someone who is working towards his degree in EE I can confirm that given the current technology it is unfeasible to transfer that much power using a standard such as Qi. I have known the Qi to hit its limit with medium sized tablets such as the Nexus 7 and it can get a bit warm when doing so. Hope that clarifies!

Do you see it being feasible within lets say... 5 years?

I see it being possible in the next five years, for devices such as ultrabook or low-power class laptops, if there is a demand for the commercialization of such technology. I wouldn't put it past some of the large companies (ie. Google) to be in the process of developing or finalizing such products and peripherals. I bet we will see a demo of just such tech at CES next year.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qi_(inductive_power_standard) Apparently, Qi has patented a higher capacity charger that can charge devices up to 120W. This would make it usable with all but the highest power laptops and mobile workstations.
