About 2 years ago I found a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB in a bin of used parts I got for cheap from a bankruptcy auction. (Paid like $25 for a bunch of fans, heatsinks, cables and this)

It seems to be working fine when plugged in and you transfer files to it. Thought I save it til mine broke instead of putting it in RAID 0 but now I kinda need more SSD space.

I have 2 questions tho.

1. Can an SSD go bad if not used for years?

2. What is the best way to make sure it is working correctly. Like a stresstest

Thank you for any help

an SSD doesn't care if it's been sitting around or not, that only applies to Physical Hard Drives.

and you can test it's speed with CrystalDiskMark, and also you can check the SMART status using CrystalDiskInfo, you can post them here if you want us to evaluate the results.

every Hard Drive or SSD has S.M.A.R.T built in, so it records everything from when it was first being used, doesn't matter if you format the drive or not, it's always there and never resets.

I will plug it in again and get back with the results.

It ending up in a used bin worries me a bit about why it was replaced so even if we see a few amount of writes throught S.M.A.R.T. But maybe just harvested from a computer that was thrown away for something else.

if SMART detected any sector errors you can still use the drive for games and such, just don't put important data on it, but i doubt that it's faulty.

and having a certain amount of writes is really okay, Samsung SSD's are really durable, they even specify the minimum amount of writes the SSD is guaranteed to handle (which is 75 Terabytes), but ofc that's only the minimum, in reality it can handle alot more writes than that.
