NAS File systems

I am going to be building a NAS at some point in the future and was wondering about the pros and cons of ZFS vs Raid. From what I understand you can't add a drive to a ZFS file system. in my mind that makes it unusable if you are going to be accumulating data and need to expand. Am I wrong in this? My use case is a home smb server and backup device.

Whats your drives are you using? What os?

 

ZFS can add drives by adding a vdev. Expanding a vdev is comming soon.

 

If you want a raid/storage system that allows easy expansion look at something like unraid, snapraid, or btrfs.
