I'm looking at a system for my friend.

Would the i5 9600K be compatible with the Gigabyte Z370P D3 out of the box?

 

Without any of the BIOS update nonsense. I don't want to make this awkward for him

You may or may not have to update, theres no real way to tell. If you want to avoid it get a Z390 board.
