So I'm looking to bring some new "life" to my old Dell Latitude e5420 Laptop by installing an SSD, originally I was gonna just swap out the 500GB HDD for a 128GB SSD and then later on get a CD ROM drive bay to SATA adapter to put the HDD into that, but then I was tinkering around and noticed 2 free mSATA ports, one short, and one long, and remembered that mSATA SSD's exist. My question is, is my old Dell Latitude e5420 compatible with an SSD of the sort, like this one https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA12K6WA0969&Description=msata ssd&cm_re=msata_ssd-_-20-147-683-_-Product . And would I be getting the same performance (or similar) compared to if I just did a SATA SSD instead?  (Picture is of the mSATA port on my laptop)

I'm pretty sure it's the same, its got the same pinout and the same dimensions as the mSATA SSD.

Just cause the pinout and connector is the same doesn't mean it will work. Its not sata in that connector so it won't work.

and even if it would work, then you would still get the same speeds, because it's both the sata protocol
