I use a flash drive when updating the BIOS on my computer.  Create a bootable flash drive, download the new BIOS to the flash drive and then restart the machine booting of the flash drive and then install the new BIOS.  Been doing it that for quite a while without any problems so should work for you too.

You have to a have a storage drive for your computer to work... and for the needing storage, you usually do bios updates last thing, so that shouldn’t be a problem
