Should I replace my Hyper 212?

Charkel
Go to solution Solved by Charkel,

It turned out I didn't have the AM4 kit so I bought a new one. I'm happy I did because they had fixed the old 'grooves int the plate' problem mine had. (Grooves between contact plate and pipes) Maybe I only had the 212 and not the EVO i dont remember

Think the old copper pipes were fine tho it was performing well after all these years (8?) so I'm hoping for a long life with my new 212 EVO

I bought a Hyper 212 back in 2010. Should I get a new one? Seems to be performing well.

If it's performing well then I see no reason to get a new one. You might want to redo your thermal paste every couple years but again, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You might need to replace the fan at some point, but the heatsink itself won't degrade in performance if you keep it somewhat clean.

If it's working properly and you're happy with your temps, why replace it?

I have replaced paste and fans regularly. Just thinking about the fluids in the copper tubes might have dissipated. I gonna buy new computer but temps right now looks fine but hard to know when I get new CPU if temps are good or bad so was just thinking better its best to buy a new cooler to be sure that temps are optimal.

You just have to change paste every year, the fans will last several years, and the heatsink itself, even more time. If the temps are fine, stop theorizing what could've possibly maybe gone wrong. I don't think that fluid easily evaporates, and AFAIK, air cooler's heatsink easily last over 10 years. If your new CPU is performing well and within acceptable temps, no need to worry either. You seem to want to buy it, so just do, but you don't need to.

Why do you think liquids would have evaporated? They are in sealed pipes, in constant phase-change process. They don't evaporate in same manor liquid in AIOs would. Are your temps significantly worse than when you took it into action? 8 years isn't that long. My cooler hasn't been in action for as long, just over 5 years. But I haven't seen any less performance from it. Also note that fans can be the issue. Fans don't last as long as heatsinks, more moving parts.

It's a simple thing to do while you clean your PC and doesn't cost much, so, what's the real problem? We're talking about enthusiasts here, not office computers. Anyways, you can keep the paste as long as you wish, I'll change it as soon as I think my temps are going up, but I haven't had my desktop long enough to change my paste yet, so I don't have a good answer. The guy said he replaces it regularly, so better do it every year instead of every 3 months or whatever.

Looks don't matter since i was stupid enough to go with the Define S w/o the glasspanel. And I doubt I can get much better performance. I got like 20c in my room and with my old hot CPU I wasn't able to reach over 40c no matter i tried but stock was 85c. Still haven't installed the cooler so I could probably return it if I wanted tho think I have 90 days.

That one u linked has a very nice mounting solution tho. I have dleayed the swap cuz of the job of removing the whole card to replace back side brackets... The Artctic one fits on the current backplate bracket.

Yes, much better. The Hyper 212 was good 7 years ago but cooler tech has advanced since then

No, that would be the Arctic Freezer 33 eSports Edition, @OrbitalBuzzsaw specified the One.

I would know because I own the One, as well as a Hyper 212 myself.

I'd be keen to see the figures  if you own them both,

I could do a comparison between a 7yr + 212 and a current 212 would be keen to see your comparison between the sports and 212 to see what "much better" looks like.

Cheers.

I found out the hard way that my old ass Hyper 212 didn't have any AM4 mounts so I had to buy a new one anyways :)
