nearly 4 years ago i bought a cyber power pc because they make a really cool portable case that i really wanted. ive been using it as my primary pc as well as traveling with it once in awhile. im tired of this case, im tired of this tiny motherboard with 2 ram slots limited to 16gb, and dont even get me started on the cleaning... however, i am not tired of the cpu, a 4790k overclocked to 4.9ghz, i am not tired of the gpu, an evga gtx980. its a cool case for traveling, not as a primary pc...

seeing as this 4790k is still within 13% of the top modern cpu's single threaded performance(not counting overclock) i do not feel any reason to get a new cpu, i dont work on my pc, it is only for gaming, and the main game i am concerned with is rimworld, witch only uses one thread, i do not feel the need for 8 cores... i want to find a mid tower case, a new motherboard, new ram, then just plug the rest of this pc into the new one.

im looking for some advice here, ive never put together my own pc, ive taken this one apart to put a new cpu cooler on and to clean it a few times over the years so i am comfortable turning the screws in a pc, but never bought an empty case and filled it before. ive been looking for lga1150 motherboards thinking id find some great deals because its all old stock, but it does not seem to be the case... these things are expensive! newegg has a GA-Z97-D3H ATX listed for 162$ refurbished, i found a review from 2014 that claims they got that board for 130$, how can a used, refurbished 4 year old board be worth more than it was new 4 years ago? is this normal? i am kind of scared of ebay but should i try finding something used there? or is this all a stupid idea and i should consider a new cpu if i have to pay a lot for a new motherboard anyway?

High demand and low offer, that's what's going on. And building a PC is fine, I had never messed with a desktop before, just watched videos and my PC is working just fine, a few scares and moments to think what I was supposed to do, but it was fine, and I've swapped several parts with time, including the CPU. You'll be fine, just check a good guide, like from Gamers Nexus.

CPU: R7 5700X3DMotherboard: ASRock B550M-ITX A/C | Cooling: Deepcool AG400 Digital w/ Corsair ML120 Elite + 1 ML120 Elite exhaust + 2 ML140 Elite intake

RAM: 2x16GB Netac DDR4 3200MT/s | GPU: Gainward RTX 3080 Phoenix (+212MHz / +1000MHz / -6% PL)

Storage: 2TB XPG S70 Blade, Seagate Barracuda 2TB, Samsung 850 Evo 250GB (caching the HD) PSU: MSI MAG A750GL

Monitor: 2x Pichau Cepheus Fuse 28" 4k 144Hz HDR | Keyboard: Corsair K100 optical-mechanical
