First PC build/upgrade

I have an older HP p6000 desktop thst the hard drive recently died so my son and I decided we should try to build a “gaming computer” I know this is not the best choice and want be the best performer but my son is 8 and while he plays xbox and Nintendo switch frequently I’m not sure if he will take to playing on a desktop. To be honest I will probable spend more time on it than him. I’m not looking to break the bank on my kids first PC. But i also don’t want it to be a bad experience either. I want it to be as good as it can be with what we have and be an all around better computer. If this turns into a thing then we might build a more capable rig later on. I’m looking for advice on the best possible options I have a few ideas on what I need but I would rather hear it from you guys on what I should get to turn this thing into a “not so lean mild tempered lightly oiled gaming machine”

 

Mother board- N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (looks like the green one in pic)

 

Processor- AMD Athlon II X2 250

 

Chipset- AMD 785G

 

Ram- it has 3 sticks in installed with 4 slots available..

1-1GB Samsung 10600U, 2-Micron 2GB PC3-10600U

 

Power supply-250w

 

Hard drive- none

I think a good option would be to go with a new build with a simple apu. You could also buy a used optiplex and add a gtx 1050 or 1050ti.

I think it would be best if we had an idea of budget. It's hard to tell what would be the best option with no budget in mind.
