can i plug the 400mm extension kit directly to my motherboard or do i need an adapter or something?

As someone who has a very similar set, you can if your motherboard has a RGB slot. Problem is the manual is pretty vague so it takes a few tries to get things right.

No that extension requires an adapter. However the starter kit comes with the necessary 4 pin RGB adapter, just make sure your board has a 4 pin analog header available.

did you get just the extension kit as me? i have the gigabyte aorus b450 pro
