Because headphones and speakers are a reactive load and only amplifiers are designed to handle that load properly.

and for the magni and modi, ones a dac and can't really drive headphones so you need the other which is an amp to drive the headphones.

you wont need anything for earbuds then. you should be more concerned about buying headphones first.
