First PC Build

Str787

I wanna get into pc gaming and am looking to build something for around $900. Don't have a good idea of what games I will play but I don't want to be limited by not having enough power. I want to be able to play with a good frame rate even at high settings. I prefer Intel for the CPU but I know since they are a little pricey I might have to go with AMD but as long as I can still have my settings around high I'm good. Open to any suggestions.

I really just need advice on what motherboard and CPU to go with that I can expand later on. I think what Herman Mcpootis posted helped out my decision.

I'd say ryzen 2600/gtx1070 or rtx 2060 if it's any good/16gigs of ram/b450 mobo

Here's my recommendation if you choose to go with Ryzen, although I omitted the case as that's up to you to decide, although personally I use the NZXT H500 which works very well out of the box.

With the extra budget you could easily upgrade to a GTX 1070ti or RX Vega 56

Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.8Ghz w/ Arctic Freezer 33 Tower Cooler | MSI B450 Tomahawk |  32GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 3200MHz CAS 14

Sapphire RX 5700XT Pulse | EVGA 650w GQ 80+ Gold Semi-Modular  |  XPG SX6000 512GB Nvme SSD | NZXT H500

Acer XF270HU - 1440p 144Hz Freeesync IPS | Corsair Strafe - Cherry MX Red  |  Logitech G502

Those specs look around what I was aiming for, my only concern is if the i5 is enough. Can I keep all those specs the same and put a i7 on that motherboard instead

Don't worry about it, the i5 is pretty solid! If you want you can actually get a 9th gen i5 instead.

For gaming it wouldn't make a substantial difference to choose between an i5 or an i7 (or between Intel and AMD for that matter because your GPU is going to be the bottleneck unless you go with a GPU that costs almost as much as your entire system). You could upgrade to an i7 8700 with the same Mobo, but you'd need to step up to a Z390 board if you wanted to go with a "K" series CPU. Keep in mind that I went with much cheaper RAM and a cheaper Mobo for Intel because the CPU I recommended is non-overclockable; if you wanted to go with an 8700K or a 9700K you'd far exceed your price range and have to upgrade the entire platform.

Will it get 3.5 ghz or faster without getting into overclocking?

Yes, it has a 4.0 GHz boost clock which is what you will experience while gaming.
