Hello there

After reading (again) the Community standards I can find a rule saying I can't post on old threads.
Last week I posted on an old thread correcting/asking/promoting valuable discussion on some info given.

I received a pm from a member, saying I was posting on an old thread, to be careful with this.

Well first I haven't noticed, I was just looking for info, and I replied on the topic, stating it didn't made sense what was written.
Second, how can this be a bad behavior? adding content should always be good, no?

So my question is, why was my post deleted and the thread closed? the wrong info is still there to everybody follow...

It's exactly this behavior I don't understand.
Why would you make a new post, when you can complete an existing one?

Make a new might not become as complete as the old...

well, I'm not allowed to go against the mods. Contact admins colonel mortis or whiskers if you have a complaint against mods. they can give the answer much better than me

Members shouldn’t be pming you. Only mods and staff should.

Old threads getting new posts is called necro. It’s annoying to see old threads pop up.

Finally if you do necro a thread, nothing should be deleted as you might have had valuable information. The thread should only be locked to prevent it continually being necro.

Making a new thread with a link to the old thread is the best way to talk about it.

How to tell if a thread is too old?

Either the forum tells you or the last post is about a month old. You shouldn’t get locked for a 35~ day old post but I personally don’t resurrect threads more than 23~ days old.

Stickied threads are the only exception. It could be 50 years since the last post. If it stickied, feel free to post up.

Edit

i report threads that I think are necro like 6+ months old. Let the mods decide to lock it or just not touch it.

Because new posts appear in the "topics" section, so you are much more likely to get help. ;)

If you are answering an old post (especially if that post is >6 months old), the member has probably already found an answer or doesn't even care anymore.

You aren't going to get banned/warned for necroposting, but your post may get removed.

Also, as @fpo said:

Can't find a rule against it... if I'm not against the rules, my post (and others after mine) shouldn't be deleted.

I received a friendly message from someone that possibly had the same treatment before... I'm grateful for the PM.

I believe is MUCH more annoying to search information in 10 threads than have all the same subject in the same...
This is the reason why many noobs ask questions already answered in the forums...

Forums are a great source of info, not only for the OP but also for other someone looking the same subject.

Apparently, not here. Or maybe when you question certain persons?

Finally, thank you all for your input, I'll make a new post and link the old thread...

Yes, but don't you think that someone looking for info would gain much more if he/she made a new post instead of reading an old and possibly outdated one?

its not a written rule, but a reminder that old information can be relayed differently as the industry mature longer.

i copy/paste your comment to show you what you might have missed (from 2014):

necro.thumb.png.29bff5f530b4e643fb00ad64666a2493.png

new thread would have been:

say, i saw an older thread and wasn't sure if this is relevant to today's thoughts.

on crossflow radiators, would the flow restriction be a better or worse condition to say cooling temperatures?

i believe @airdeano you'd claimed this years back (link to older thread here)..
