graphics card query

Go to solution Solved by APasz,

The rating for HDMI is at least 5,000 insertions (some are rated highly) so the likelihood of damage is quite low.

However if you're still uncomfortable about it, a short extension cable can used instead of plugging directly into the gfx card.

So I bought an oculus rift, and my 1080 doesn't have two HDMI ports.

So one of monitors uses displayport but the other only has HDMI, so I've been swapping the HDMI cable whenever i wanna use the rift.

Someone said unplugging and plugging in the port will damage the port on my card, is this true?

and if so; should i get a low end card for my second monitor as a fix?

i need to use the second monitor a lot and I've been using the rift a lot so I've been swapping this wire loads since i bought it in October

Not likely, it'll be a long time before you reach the rated number of inserts and removals.

Yes, it can overtime wear the port out and solder joint and cause it to fail. What you should do is get an DP to HDMI cable and that will solve your problems of having to unplug and replug all the time.

I wouldn't worry about it.  My work laptops are always on a 4 year lease and daily I'm connecting and disconnecting the display port when I go to the boardroom for meetings and never had a port die on me.  I suspect you would have to do this thousands of times/years before you an issue.
