Motherboard choice

Most important criteria:

-the board with the best VRMs that can overclock the BEST

-board with best VRM/NB cooling 

 

Basically, wanna upgrade my friends rig so it can overclock (at least 4Ghz) to meet modern standards (kinda), get him a Gigabit NICs (he has Gigabit Internet but old mobo only Fast Ethernet) and stop the PCI-E version 1.0 from saturating his video card (both mobo choices have PCI-E version 2.0)

 

the mobo choices are as follows:

biostar tp45d2-a7 ($20)

or

Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3 ($20)

 

he is upgrading from a Biostar board so his old board has been reliable since he bought it 10 years ago

 

At first glance, the Gigabyte looks to have better VRM coolers and the ‘logical’ choice but it is also a lesser chipset (P43 vs Biostar’s P45), not sure it affects anything but.?? Also the Gigabyte has 2 full size PCI-E not like they can both run at x16 though (limited by chipset). Also had bad experiences with 775 Gigabyte boards...

 

so so I think I’ll just pick the one with best VRMs???

Just buy both boards since there is a good chance that one will fail anyways.
