Can't set Notepad++ as default

johnno124
Go to solution Solved by KuJoe,

It's a bug from a recent update. Microsoft released a patch over the weekend that fixes it. I had the same issue here:

I recently upgraded my PC with a Ryzen 5 2600X and thus required a new motherboard. I reinstalled windows 10 with a fresh install however i cant set notepad++ as default for .txt .lua or the like. I can still open these fiels with n++ but its just a pain to have to force it to open with n++ all the time.

Any Tips would be greatly apreciated

Right click on the file

Select Properties

Click on "change" in the properties window

Click on more apps

Scroll down and click on "Look for another app on this PC

Paste this in the location selector "C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++"

double click on notepad++.exe

Then click okay on the properties window

That'll add notepad++ to an application you can select.

Right click on the file

select open with

Click on Choose another app

Click on more apps

tick the "Always use this app to open x files"

Select notepad++

Click okay

Edit: fuck, MS fucked that.

Search "default app settings" in the windows search feature

scroll down till you see Select "default application for file type"

scoll down till you file the type you want

Click on it, and select notepad++

Except this isn't working for me either. Fuck off MS.

If you use Microsoft software on your computer, it will try to engulf everything, you will be forced to use mspaint(the bad one), internet explorer, notepad(the sad one), and windows file explorer.

Sadness is the one true emotion, and happiness, well, that's just a lie, sadness is all many of us feel, and is all we need to feel, because having it any other way, would just be wrong, why be happy when you can just be miserable like myself.

That's simply not true. You can set any image program as your default, any Browser as your default, any text editor as your default....You don't even have to use file explorer (but it works fine so why wouldn't you).

It's a bug from a recent update. Microsoft released a patch over the weekend that fixes it. I had the same issue here:

Have you ever used Windows before? That hasn't been true since Windows 95 I think (and even then you could hack the registry to override it I believe).
