Hi,

I'm looking at purchasing a new mobo and CPU. Namely an ASUS P9D-WS and an i7 4790K. I found a good deal on a board overseas. It was £80 so I thought I'd get the opinions of the forum seeing as it was such a deal.

I currently own a B85 board but I would like to overclock and afaik B85 does not support overclocking.

Does anyone know if this board supports overclocking and if it will support the 4790K? It's a C226 chipset but I figured it should support the 4790K since the board is LGA 1150.

Thanks.

Only Z-Chipsets support OC.

In this case Z97 is the way to go.

The one you linked is a workstation board and professionals don't tend to OC their stuff and add possible instability.

No overclocking support due to the c226. If you can find a the z87/97 WS snag it up right away as its a great board.

Thanks all. I'll look towards Z87/Z97 then. :)

Please go for Z97 as I'm not sure whether Z87 bios supports your CPU out of the box. It should though but check before buying.

I'm looking more towards Z97 anyway as it's much better value than Z87 where I am.

For the WS line for haswell Z87 has the better board ;)

Thinking of ordering a Z87/Z97 WS board from the USA or Canada since there are practically none in the UK, so I'll be sure to keep my eye out for any offers.

In the states getting a WS board is gonna having you paying quiet a bit. Yes I overpaid, but in the end it was worth it as this board is now going on Year 5 currently of still being reliable as fuck.

Yeah, WS boards are like $300 over there. I did find a good deal on an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 though, so I'll see how that goes.
