Gaming at 1080p on a 4k tv?

So I'm buying a 4kTV soon, around 50inches. Will I be able to play my pc games on it at 1080p or 1440p if my pc can't handle 4k?

yes. you can just select the output resolution. Now you may have to contend with quality reduction due to interpolation depending on you display. This should also be able to be worked around using display settings so that your game is being rendered at 1080 and outputted at 4K.

It'll look a bit crappy with it being HD on a 4K screen, but it'll work fine.

Yes. If you stretch the 1080p to 4k it will look muddy and maybe a bit pixelated and if you dont stretch you will have black borders.

I'd imagine there'd be a little difference. It's a bit like 720p on 1080p screen, it just scales up and might decrease in quality.

Here's a good option: Hitachi 32" Full HD tv. That's what I'm using and it does the job just fine. Fits just right on a normal sized desk too.

Well it depends on how the specific TV handles it. Some TVs handle it better than others. Do you know which model you may get?

Wouldn't gpu scaling help avoid issues with interpolation? 

 

A 1080p screen is easier.

Depends on the scaling engine that the TV uses. What brand and model of TV are you looking at, and do you actually have enough 4K content to warrant the purchase / waste of money on 4K? If you don't have enough 4K content, it'd be better to buy a better quality 1080p TV for the time being.
