Best CPU for me (1800x or 7700k)

Yes. There's no changing games for multi-threading if precision and speed are required such as car/bullet physics while AI can split their workloads to multiple threads before coming to a conclusive result. Games like Battlefield are often erroneously thought of as multi-threaded due to using multiple cores, but they are largely single-threaded and capable of utilizing many cores. There's no such game that is multi-threaded or single-threaded in its entirety as each method has its pros and cons, but utilizing multiple cores is a separate concept to those.

Hi, I am planning on building a PC but I am very confused about the state of CPUs right now. I want to be able to game on the PC but at the same time, I need to run design programs such as solid works, which uses multithreaded processes. After doing some research I found that while the new Ryzen launch is performing very well and has a high core & thread count, the 7700k performs much better on games (I play a lot of openworld action/adventure games such as Fallout & Assasins Creed). I need some guidance in terms of what I should be looking for in a CPU and what CPUs currently satisfies those needs. Thank you.

P.S.  The recent linus vids seem to lean toward the 7700k, but luke bashed it in an earlier video.

7700K wins in most areas except rendering. The question you should ask yourself is "do I render or edit most often?".

Personally, I would buy one and be happy.

1800x isn't worth it, you can get the 1700 and overclock it to the same speeds with a decent cooler.

The performance in gaming isn't too bad really, especially if you only game on a 60hz screen(do you?) i'd go for a 1700 in your case nonetheless.

The 1800X has different price than the i7, the ryzen 7 1700 is the perfect match

well if you do multi threaded workloads (doing multiple things at the same time) you should go for Ryzen

So I have been using Ryzen for 90 days from Skylake. I use it to game/stream and create youtube content for my channel. For you the extra threads of Ryzen is the way to go, and your not losing much with gaming. Also forgo the 1800x. Go 1700x or 1700 and overclock. The X stands for Extended frequency technology, something that boosts the cpu past the boost clock depending on the thermal temps. Only thing is its just on 1-3 cores and its not even more then 50hz in most cases, so the tech is not worth it at all. I have the 1700x and honestly if I could buy again I would of just done 1700 and done a oc.

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

I was planning on getting a 1440p monitor @144Hz with G-sync

Can you elaborate as to why it wins over something as the new Ryzen 1700x

IPC and speed play a bigger factor than core count. Puget systems has a great article on Solidworks and Premiere if you're interested in reading.

Sky (6XXX) and Kaby (7XXX) use the LGA1151 socket and H/B/Z 1XX and 2XX chipsets. Depends on your needs. If you're working on large-scale models, faster cores would be better, but if you're just rendering models, go with Ryzen's higher core counts.
