iPhone environmental imapct?

SmilesRising

does the iphone have a big impact on the environment? like when they craft the aliminium, glass and such. i know that the factories produce a bit of carbon dioxide but what about the materials used?

They recycle pretty much everything, first and foremost aluminium and glass. Recently they've shown off a robot they named "Liam" which basically disassembles iPhones and separates every possible component. If I'm not wrong they actually recycled quite a ton of gold out of older devices.

but what about the creation of the aluminium. is there any envoriomental impact there?

of course. metallurgy and glass making need huge amounts of energy

They do not OWN their factories, their parts are made by companies like Foxconn etc they are not directly responsible, apple do not OWN the chinese manufacturing plants but are trying hard to make it better

But their products have a very green profile, their data centres use 100% renewable energy, their products are recycled and made without toxins, their products are energy efficient etc

(Just recently the foxxcon factory let go 60k workers and replaced them with robots, but foxconn are an independent company and also supply samsung and other tech giants)

Watch any apple conference, they talk alot about their green nature, in fact companies should be following what Apple do

Apple get a bad rep online, dont listen to the blind haters

also they are huge on recycling too espeically with their new robot!!!!
http://www.macrumors.com/2016/04/15/apple-recycling-recovered-40-million-in-gold/

Apple have a "take back" program to recycle old products, this is how much they recycled back in 2015 before this new robot was installed, so i bet they can double this or more for 2016

Apple-iphone-recycling-numbers.jpg

Apple says in total it collected almost 90 million pounds of ewaste through its recycling programs, which works out as 71 percent of the total weight of the products the company sold seven years earlier.

Depends on what you are looking at... do you include just the assembly?

or also the aluminum and glass?

How about the integrated circuits? The production takes about a f*ckton of electricity - photolithographic processes require, for example, a UV laser with output of of a few 100W, which requires several 100kW from the mains. Not to mention the huge amounts of poisonous chemicals used, and water as well.

Or how about the production Li-ion batteries, which puts the oil industry to shame with the amount of nasty waste produced in the process.

Which Apple do not use, etc

its hard to say, considering quite a lot of apples stuff runs on renewable energy etc

I imagine the carbon footprint of a single iphone is very small taking into account how much is recycled etc

There is no IC production without developers, solvents, photoresists and whatnot. All of that stuff is poisonous. Now in other processes, I wouldn't know. But IC production is my specialty as an EE...

Well from some sources listed below

iPhone 6 = 95kg CO2 over its lifespan (like 57kg to make it)
Burger = 540-915 kg CO2 over the average Americans burger consumption per year (3 to 6 kg per burger)

apple also have the least repairable hardware on the planet so if it breaks you need a whole another machine. that's not green.

That is very true and something worth considering though I would counter that their machines tend to last well (ie lots of people still using like 2008-2010 macbooks to this date)

But it does factor in the green aspect
