MSI R9 280X Overclocking!

Okay, this is my first time that i have OCed my GPU :)

From Core Clock 1020 and Memory clock 1500 i managed to move to 1135/1640

I have tested temps in Heaven Benchmark 4.0 on 1135/1640 temps are 73C and on stock 1020/1500 70C, i know Heaven Benchmark 4.0 is not the best program for testing, i will test it in BF4 and thief :) (BUT later)

I know that 73C is okay , but in games like Metro last light and Thief i will get probably more.. A lot more.

Very nice increase!

Did you have to increase voltage at all?

Nope

EDIT: I can't wait to test it in BF4 or Thief :)

Probably temps will jump more.

EDIT: EEE, I'm getting more ram on Monday! :)

Finally i will have 8 GB of RAM

No more comments ???!?!?

Well if your game does not artifact or crash then your speeds are stable.

I don't overclock the vram on my 280x though... 1500 is fast enough. Overclocking vram doesn't give noticeable improvements in-game.

Temps in heaven are usually higher than in-game though. Games have disruptions (loading screens, cutscenes, ...), while heaven maxes the GPU the entire time. If you've ran it for an extended period and the max is 73, chances are that it won't reach that temp in games.

Little tip, careful on the OC on this specific card. The MSI 280X TF IV has a bad habit of leaking fan bearing lubricant if you spin the fans hard enough. Same thing happened to me.

Then i should only OC Core clock?

so not true.

I was getting in heaven about 70 or 71

But in games like Thief and metro last light i was getting 75-77C

Edit: then my GPU was not OCed

You want to say, that i shouldn't touch FAN speed in MSI afterburner?

Up to you, if temps are fine then there's no real need to edit the fan curve.

Well then. Can't say I've ever seen higher temps in a game than in a benchmark, but if that's the case for you so be it.

Now you are scaring me, Could there be a problem with my GPU then?

Up to you. If you feel that you want to OC vram then go ahead.

I didn't OC vram because its pointless in games.

Not all TF4 fans are like that though... If your's isn't leaking then you can play around with the fan curve all you want.

Not at all. Heaven is a bit outdated, so it might just not be stressing the gpu on all fronts. If you really want to see your max Temps, try running firestrike, that's usually higher than you see in-game

when i ran a 280X and 7970 (same card) on the 280X i was able to get 1220Mhz on the core and 1550 on the memory on the 7970 i was able to get 1190Mhz on the core but the memory would not go above 1500MHz. i all ways ran with no extra voltage and the max temp on a single card was about 72c and with 2 cards it was about 84c 100% fan speed lol

You can just use the demo of 3DMark, which is available through steam only.
