Deadlaptop. Working hard drive

Maxiichan

My friend has gave me an old laptop (roughly 10 years old) she wants me to recover her family photos of it.

what methods of recovery would you guys suggest?

Because of the age of the HDD would data recovery still be possible?

because I am aware in this instance I can’t simply just plug in the hdd to a working pc and remove the data from it because it’s not a portable drive.

how would I go about this?

This “not a portable drive” thing gives me pause.  What do you mean by that?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Portable (aka external) ones u can instantly accsess data. When plugging into a different pc. Every time I plug a hdd directly into a different pc for some reason it recognises it as a new drive, sorry i don’t know too much about data recovery.

I usually take the drive out and put it in my docking station.

Then take out the files that way.

Another way to put this is one removes the hard drive from the laptop.  The drive should have some sata connection on it.  One then plugs this sata connection(power and data) into another machine whereupon the files on this drive can then be copied onto another one.  Is this what you mean by “portable”? And how is “non portable” different in this case? “Portable” is really a horrible term btw.  I don’t think it’s used in this context.
