Hello, This is my first time posting on this forum, but I feel like this would be the best place to ask my question. So here we go. So I have a Lenovo Y510p laptop http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y510p/ with two Nvidia 750m GPUs running in SLI (this is option given the ultrabay support that lenovo has so I can take out the second GPU and only run one if I choose to.) I use this laptop basically as a desktop because my monitor is bigger and I have a mechanical keyboard that I like to use. So it stays closed and is hooked up to my monitor via HDMI. time is starting to take its toll on this computer and I'm wanting to build myself another desktop soon so what better way to start then to hold myself over with a eGPU until i slowly build my desktop. Now to the nitty gritty. I'm here asking all of you your best opinions on how I will maximize the performance of this laptop with a eGPU. I would like to avoid bottlenecks the best I can, but as I said above this is just going to be temporary. If I'm not mistaken the only option I have is my mini pcie slot that my wifi card is in, but if any of you know a way to use the ultrabay that (i assume) would probably give me the best performance from the GPU. for the graphics card I plan on using. It will either be a GTX 1060 or a GTX 1070. I don't have any interest in having a AMD card. I have seen ultrabay extention egpus that work with AMD cards, but as i just said. I would rather go with Nvidia. Thank you all in advance! I will try and post back as soon as I possibly can in reply to you all.

I have an old laptop, Lenovo y510P. In its original configuration, it came with Intel i7 4700mq processor, a 2GB NVIDIA graphics card and 8 GB RAM. I have upgraded it over the time, increased the RAM, changed to an SSD. Over the time, cooling fan has degraded I guess and CPU runs hotter. Cleaning the internal dust or the fan itself serves as temporary solution. Nowadays, it reaches 90 Celsius almost in no time. So, I want to replace the fan and I don't want the local repair shop guy to scam me. I can replace the fan myself. I just need help with models either from Lenovo or other manufacturers that will be compatible with my laptop. Can anybody help me?

Hi guys, So I was thinking about upgrading to SSD since my HDD seems to be working at 100% constantly even if I have no applications running. I am pretty new to all the hardware stuff but I am pretty sure I have a SSD slot in my Lenovo y510p. I was thinking about a 256gb SSD for faster boot, apps and OS. Can anyone please give me details about what is the compatible SSD for my laptop along with recommendations for a few good SSD. Any help in this matter is appreciated. Thanks

Hello everyone, meet the evil Y510P. Some of the issues i have with it are : 1.''AC Adapter not recognized upon disconnecting/reconnecting, i have to turn off, remove battery, hold power button for 30 seconds, and turn on with only ac adapter'' 2.''resolution issues in some games where the screen flickers black and i can't get to see shit, it keep minimizing'' 3.''THIS'' http://imgur.com/A7d7Vjl ''motherboard damage around the upper center of the screen, burnt spot under the top right of the plastic cover'' #isitbaddoctor? 4.''crashes amongst those, (render device removed),(gpu not responding), etc...'' Hello everyone, I live in India. I currently own a Lenovo Y510P laptop with the following specifications: Intel Core i7 4700MQ 2.4 GHz (Turbo boost upto 3.4 GHz) processor 8 GB RAM 1TB 5400rpm hard disk Nvidia 755m graphics card I use my laptop to browse the internet, watch a lot of tv shows and play a few games (like GTA V, Sleeping Dogs, Watch Dogs, NFS Rivals, GRID 2 usually). I'm looking to upgrade the hard disk. I have two options: 1) I can go for a 1 TB SSHD and ditch my old 1TB 5400 rpm HDD. 2) I can add 120GB SSD by removing my dvd drive and adding the ssd in hdd caddy and then inserting that back into the laptop. Which will give me overall better performance that the order? I know there won't be an FPS increase but loading time will go down. Also, my laptop will boot up and function at a much better rate. Few things to note, I'm on a tight budget as I'm still a student. I found the parts in question at the following prices: Samsung 850 EVO 120 GB SSD Internal Hard Drive (MZ-75E120) for Rs. 5070. HDD Caddy for Rs. 1199. Seagate Solid State Hybrid Drive 9.5 mm thickness 1 TB Laptop Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LM014) for Rs. 6525. Also, advice me if there's a better SSD or SSHD out there for the price. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to SSDs and all. I only shop from Flipkart and Amazon India. Thanks in advance.

***Letting everyone know that this topic is currently under construction. If it seems spotty or incomplete, it is because I'm still working on it*** ==Hi there forum, for those of you curious about this thread, know that I started it regarding Lenovo y510p laptop troubleshooting techniques I've compiled from various sources on the interwebs. If you are reading this thread, and own a Lenovo y510p laptop, you are no stranger to all of the "quirks" associated with this laptop. To preface this, I'd like to say, I intend this to be a one-stop-shop for needs regarding troubleshooting the Lenovo y510p. I intend to keep it a progressive guide (or rather hub) for forum threads and such that I see can resolve common issues among the owners of said laptop. If you personally have input you'd like to add that would help in any way, feel free to respond to this post with it. I will try to edit it in the main post (with credits to you of course). I want to make sure others with this laptop have a great experience with it, and I wanted to provide the means for them to resolve their issues with it.== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First off, THE HEATING ISSUES. Granted, heating is an issue that is disconcerting to most people shopping notebooks, yet it is especially apparent in the y510p. Peruse a variety of forums and you will find heating is a scourge plaguing this laptop. Here are a few threads dedicated to helping remedy this issue: Note: This laptop was designed to house the nVidia GeForce GT 650m (or a second one depending on the ultrabay option you chose), yet when they threw in the higher clocked/volted 750m & 755m models, they didn't redesign to adapt for the higher heat outputs (thus the high temps). Additionally, at launch, Lenovo introduced consumers to the amazing "Ultrabay" technology. This was going to be a hot-swap port that consumers could vary based on their use. There were options, at time of launch, detailing a second GPU, or an additional memory drive, or an additional fan, or a DVD/Blu-ray drive (and I believe that's all, I could've perhaps missed one). Though these Ultrabay accessories never truly saw the light of day, as Lenovo discontinued their sale after issues with the sli (which was a damn shame, that tech seemed truly awesome). These were just two of the shortfalls of Lenovo regarding this product line, which is why I wanted to start this thread to help make the experience better for those with this product, and disappointed with Lenovo's oversight. -Get a laptop cooling pad (here's a link to some of Amazon's top sellers, make sure to read the reviews first): http://goo.gl/XPck1p -This thread addresses a hardware issue that shrouds the cooling fans inside of the laptop, a strange oversight on Lenovo's part (as there is no apparent reason this issue, as they do not appear to be prevalent to per-say add support or such): http://goo.gl/yJRZhu (if you are looking to buy a second bottom carriage to mod to unshroud the fans for the y510p laptop, as to avoid warranty issues on your original, here is a link to buy said bottom, you can mod it and if the laptop breaks and you are still under warranty, then you can just reattach the original if you are concerned you might void warraty): http://goo.gl/fmQNXK -This thread produces a script that runs Lenovo's "Dust Removal" function to run the fans at 100% speed more frequently than the base function of the "Dust Removal" process, as Lenovo (for what people are assuming are noise management reasons) only allow the fans' speculated speed under load to be 75% of their potential speed, which results in some high temps (especially in the sli version). The ability to change the fan speed under load seems to be hidden in the developer's EC bios and is not accessible at the time of this post. http://goo.gl/KaUF30 -This thread is a brainstorming thread where people are trying to figure how they might be able to access fan speed controls without hardware mods (no luck at the time of this posting): http://goo.gl/FK3m6D -This thread is (yet another) regarding hardware mods to help dissipate heat. This one would for sure void warranty (so be wary), as I don't have a link for the replacement of this. This particular one is regarding bypassing the fan speed lock to enable the fans to run at full speed underload (since there is no software support for that at the time of this posting): http://goo.gl/0SkL2f ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Secondly, for those of you that have had the y510p since the olden days, you know of the various software issues, such as sli and wireless, that were present (although they have been fixed as of now), so if you're still experiencing software issues, here are links to possible solutions: -Here is a link to Lenovo's website with all of the current drivers for the Lenovo y510p: http://goo.gl/NpumtA -Here is a thread that I could find regarding the sli issues, the solution is provided by a Lenovo forum rep: http://goo.gl/1KlHeh ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thirdly, ergonomics is a key area. (As mentioned by Toddwjp of the LTT forum), the wrist rest can be uncomfortable. Some have described it as sharp. -This is a thread that mentions how one might go about fixing this issue: http://goo.gl/IyA8N8 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Fourthly, with the functionality of the Ultrabay technology virtually overlooked, due to the lack of availability to get accessories for it (for whatever reasons Lenovo decided not to make them easily accessible), it is hard to get your hands on the Ultrabay products. To help with this I'll list links to what I can find (and at time of this post, the links have available units) -These are links to the Ultrabay GPU 755m graphics unit (be forewarned, take a look at the thermal dissipation techniques I mentioned earlier, to help maximize performance for these cards) http://goo.gl/kMxiPl http://goo.gl/5kqq7U http://goo.gl/Mp4d9U http://goo.gl/wLYOEJ http://goo.gl/HG8svR http://goo.gl/TV8cor ***Footnote: This is not a post asking for troubleshooting help, but it is rather a post providing possible troubleshooting techniques for those who might need it in the future. It is a compilation of what I have found when running into issues myself, and have seen that others have shared similar issues, thus I wanted to consolidate the resources I have found.***

Hello fellas, So I'm moving to the Netherlands soon and I have to say goodbye to my desktop PC and say hello to notebooks world which is a new world to me. I'm a CG Artist and I need a powerful machine for my day-to-day use. I figured that Lenovo by far is the best choice in terms of value to performance criteria. I thought about buying a notebook in the Netherlands or order it from other parts of Europe but could not find a shop with reasonable prices. If some folks from the Netherlands out there know some good places with good prices- I would love to hear it. I found out that lots of shops in my neighbour country(in my case - Romania) have exactly what I need with strangely really good prices. So far there are three things to choose from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p i7-4700MQ 1TB 16GB 2xGT755M-2GB SLI - €976($1 314) Lenovo IdeaPad Y50-70 i7-4700HQ 8GB+1TB 16GB GTX860M 4GB - €1 022($1 376) Lenovo IdeaPad Y50-70 i7-4700HQ 256GB SSD 16GB GTX 860M 4GB - €1090($1 468) Without a doubt I'd buy the last one, such a sweet deal, isn't it? But this configuration seems quite strange to me, I haven't seen or at least found this kind of configuration on amazon or anywhere else(maybe I did a poor research, my apologies then). But it seems legit, since folks who bought it said that SSD model is LITEONIT LCS-256M6S, can't judge if this is a good SSD or not. Can a lenovo laptop with such configuration be a fake one? Also if there are better notebooks out there with the same prices but with better specs I would love to hear about them. Thank you and any amount of help is appreciated :3
