HI the purpose of this topic is to collect as many as possible bash improvements and set t ings that live in your bash running config( ~/.bashrc*0 A few rules beforehand: - every thing posted should atleast a description for what it does - and the depencies it may or may not have if they arend part of coreutils and or the posix std. - !!!! NO FUNCTIONS !!! if you want to share a neat function , and its not user specific , you can still post it but make sure it can operate as - a stand alone shell script in /opt/bin/ or /usr/bin/ or allow for dropping in /etc/profile.d or /etc/bash/bashrc.d/ without requiring anyting more than a simple call from bashrc or a source instruction - please also separate the aliasses that are distro specific , into a seperate code block so people can copy whole sections without cluttering their env wit aliases that wont work on their system... - if you do need to store something in the env please try to use a bash array ifits more than a single variable, and prefix the variable with the corename of the thing. - for any code that creates new files on the system a procedure to remove all those files automaticly needs to be included , even as a part of an istaller or part of the make file ... eg -dont assume people have sudo installed just write the thing as if ran by root , if it fails when run as regular user , not a problem but an error complaining about permissions is easier fixed than an error about file not found. ill start of with my discoveries some of them really old : 2004+ some of them only recent additions and i wish i had known since the beginning. As the title says, in the near future i will change from macOS to Windows 10. So it would be great if some of you, which have changed to Windows 10 as their daily driver, can exchange their experience and maybe some tricks that could make the change easier. I want to change, because i need more "power" for video editing and maybe in the future some gaming. I never used a PC which runs Windows, not even in school, because we have Macs there. Here are some questions i have, and maybe if you have some advice, feel free to share it with me. What about Virus protection? Which software do you use? Whats important ? I don't really get the whole "driver software" thing. What do i have to do? Tips for a great workflow Any useful software for a Windows 10 noobie Thank you to everybody who gives me an advice.

Hey guys, Im a console guy trying to make my way over to the PCMR. I must say not as easy as it looks. As far as mouse and aiming as such i can get use to. However, movement with the wasd just isn't working out. Not only is it uncomfortable for my wrist but my finger are really big and the buttons too close together. Is this something i'll get use to? Should I stick to console? Any tips?

Hello! I might buy a new scooter soon, put I'm not sure... (I mean a scooter without an engine, just to be clear) I would use it most of the time for transport and sometimes for tricks... my budget is 120$ Oh, yes, and one more thing... does anyone know a store that sells scooters that ship to Europe, put not with a extremely big price of shipping? (I'm asking this cause I saw many of them not to ship to Europe or the prices of the shipping being tooooooo high...) If anyone has any advice, reply to this post. Thanks to everyone in advance!

So at tech university we've been assigned to plan a cloud solution which would improve security and reliability of a rail-based transport system. The machines are old and not computerized so I'd have to introduce standalone hardware and software to make it all work. The effort and cost should be minimal. I'm thinking on a few possible ways this could work (e.g. a centralized server with limited access according to the rank of the staff members plus a cloud backup) however I'm not very much into cloud architecture so any tips on what must and mustn''t be done would be greatly appreciated! Also if you are familiar with any existing plans which I could base mine on, please share. P.S. It's a side assignment, not rewarding grades or credits.

I'm recording 1080p60, but my videos still don't look quite as smooth as I'd like. I'd add motion blur, but then a 20 minute video takes 9 hours to render instead of 1. Resample looks disgusting unless I have 120FPS, which doesn't record well with OBS on my PC (although D3Dgear did it with relatively low stuttering). So, does anybody have any tips for getting the most out of OBS or Vegas? My specs: i5-4670 (Intel Turbo mode from 3.4ghz to 3.8ghz) 8GB RAM (default for dell optiplex 9200, same with motherboard) GT 1030 (no overclock) Settings for OBS: Recording: 1080p, bilinear filter, 60fps, CRF 12, Quicksync Streaming: 1080p, 60fps, CBR 15000, Quicksync Settings for Vegas render: 1080p, 60fps, best resolution rendering quality, disable resample, 50MBPS video bitrate, 128kbps audio bitrate My game/recording doesn't lag at 60FPS, I get 300-400FPS ingame usually. Recording Minecraft and MCW10 mainly.

(As usual, not exactly sure where to post this. Mods: please move me if necessary) So a couple of months ago, I decided I wanted to leave the Apple smart phone ecosystem. It seemed really restrictive, and it looked like the grass was much greener on the other side of the fence. Also, my ageing iPhone 5s needed and upgrade ASAP. Fast forward to today, and I have just received a OnePlus 5t that I ordered a few weeks ago. Setup was really simple, and Android seems much less complicated than I thought. I'm definitely happy with my purchase, but I was wondering if anybody has some tips or tricks for me, to really expand my knowledge of Android as an operating system. I'm currently on a modified version of 7.1.1 called OxygenOS, if that helps. Thanks in advance!

I am trying to salvage an old computer of mine to play newer games, and would like to know if it would be a waste of time and money. The system specs are : CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-950 Processor (8M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 4.80 GT/s Intel® QPI) Motherboard: GA-X58A-UD3R Intel® X58 + ICH10R Chipset PowerSupply: 500w Ram: 8Gb Storage: 2 - 1 terrabyte sata hard drives Video Card: Saphire Radeon Hd 5750 1Gb DDR 5 Case: Coolermaster HAF 920 with Tooless all that jazz. Any advice to make this old system run new games would be appreciated seeing as my wallets a little tight but I can save for new components. I want to max out this old system to its best specs and call it a day if possible. please and thank you for any help at all. If it looks like a lost cause please show me a newer budget build that can run games like the new Doom but still has upgrade potential to get better. I have tried to do the research and get lost in trying to sort out how to build a new system. Again please and thank you for the help.

This is the rig I'm planning to construct: Cpu: Intel Core i7 6700K Gpu: MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4G Psu: Corsair RM750 Mobo: MSI H170 GAMING M3 Case: NZXT Noctis 450 (Black/Red) Hdd: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001, 2TB Ssd: Kingston SSDNow V300 120 GB Cpu-Cooler: Lepa AquaChanger 240 Ram: Kingston HyperX Fury black HX426C15FBK2/8 (Or 16 GB, Not sure yet) This rig will be mostly used for gaming aswell as some editting (Which my trusty old laptop at the moment just cant handle). Has anyone gotten any experience with an alike build, any of these components or some swaps which should be in place?, Please let me know. Aswell have I been wondering what kind of monitor setup this beast would be able to handle? Because of the limited space on my desk I've decided to go with two monitors instead of a 'surround' setup of three. These are the options for me I'm thinking about: 2x 1920x1080 1920x1080 + 2560x1440 1920x1080 + 3840x2160 2x 2560x1440 2560x1440 + 3840x2160 2x 3840x2160 What do you guys think this rig is capable of, and what do you think of this rig itself. Hi there! I am brand new to the forum and after an initial search for a similar discussion, I couldn't find anything so let me start: are you a disabled person in any way or personally know a disabled person who is a tech enthusiast and/or a gamer? If yes, do you have any tips and tricks for other people who may be suffering from similar difficulties? Any software, hardware or other work-arounds that let you enjoy old games and newer AAA titles? I, personally, have been suffering from a severe visual impairment for 14 years now (legally blind for the win) and I have still been playing games for roughly the same time (N.B. I didn’t go blind because I have been gaming so much… au contraire, I should be playing games at least 2 hours per day <<yay science!!>>) – I can share if this topic gets any interest whatsoever.

This is my basic security guide for your technology. This will include basic settings on routers, modems, servers and computers as well as techniques, tools and other things you can use to find and remove malware/backdoors and prevent exploitation. This guide will not include antivirus software, if you want one. Go for it, I use one but these days there are only a select few which are even decently good and most people already know of them. And besides, is an antivirus going to protect you against getting exploited, getting a payload run and backdoors remotely controlled from a machine done by a hacker in their bedroom? Nope. Post-introduction notes: If you have an LTT theme, and cannot see the text. Post a comment and I will try to fix it. Just so you know. Network Security: Everything coming from the WAN starts at your home network. (pretty much). And so its important to make it as secure as possible, One of the most important features of your router (hopefully ) is your firewall. This controls what is allowed in and out. The default configuration allows all traffic out of the network but no traffic in, unless its through certain ports such as port 80. This is why there is port forwarding, so you can allow connections through your firewall to a computer, so a server can be accessed by the internet. So, because of this generally its not a good idea to port forward unless you have a reason too. This will increase your protection significantly, as there isn't a directly open port an attacker can get through. Anonymity is very precious in the Security world because it allows you to be at more security, if someone doesn't know you exist how can they attack you. For that same reason, if you 'stealth' your open/closed ports then an attacker doesn't know which ports are open or closed. Or even available for that matter. This is actually a pretty easy process as long as your router actually offers a setting for it, most routers will actually come with this by default. But, if you can drop incoming packets which aren't authorized, then an attacker will have no response. And generally your router will not respond with anything. The easiest and most accessible way of testing this out for yourself is to head over to GRC (The Gibson Research Cooperation) and go to Shields Up. https://www.grc.com/shieldsup This will, in short terms. Run a port scan of several ports remotely to see if they are open, closed or not responding (invisible). This is useful as it allows you to see what your router does in reaction to a probe. Some router firewalls will do nothing, until they detect the probe and then will proceed to stealth the ports. This is good, but also bad. So, run it on common ports and all service ports to see what your router's reaction is. If it shows up as failed, try to change some settings to stealth yourself. DNS servers can also be a factor here, but generally its only a threat in large attacks on an ISP aiming at lots of people. So in short terms, trust your isp security and if their dns servers get spoofed, the cache gets poisoned or something blame them. Intranet Security: This part is more a local part. There might be a black hat living across the road. if so, you should definitely follow this Wifi encryption is pretty important to keeping the badguys out. I was running a local scan and found a couple neighbors with WEP security. Which is pretty useless these days. You probably already know to use WPA2. Which most routers have unless your running a very old one. The settings you should turn off is WPS (unless you plan on using it). Which isn't necessarily as insecure and people think. None the less, its quite insecure and should be turned off unless you actually plan on using it, which most people never do. You should also turn off UPNP which can allow acess to your network even through your firewall, and can be exploited. However, if you want to torrent without port forwarding or something, its a good idea to have it on. But, don't have it on unless you plan on using it. Lastly, try to change your wireless password every so often, about every 30 to 90 days. Its certainly not needed, but it can be useful considering every network can be hacked into. Its just a matter of time. So, its a good habbit to get into. Also, try to make your passwords at least 16 characters long. Preferably 30 characters. With numbers, letters, symbols, spaces and also hex codes if you want even more security. Moving on from wifi, the setting and firewalls of your network computers are also very important. Generally, you want every computer inside the network to have a firewall. While it doesn't need to be hardcore, it just needs to be able to handle the personal connections, as well as the inside-the-network connections. This can help if someone is trying to compromise a computer inside the network, while being inside the network as it is entirely possible. Windows Firewall is all you need, it has pretty good settings by default. Protection For Individual Computers: This is a pretty crucial part. Hackers can still gain access to systems through drive by downloads and malware so its important to protect yourself as best as you can. As said previously, this will not include antivirus software. A great way of securing your computer against exploitaion is using EMET, short for Enhanced Mitigation Experien Toolkit https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/jj653751 This enhances the default Windows security features which just allow DEP for programs that want it. This will do that for certain programs you choose, and will also add other security features such as ASLR. Note: Some antivirus software have this built in, if yours does. There is no need to use EMET. If your using Avast, AVG, Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials which are popular antivirus suites, they do NOT include these features by default. Other ways you can improve your security is by using a different browser than, internet explorer. And hopefully get a script blocking addon with a default deny system. Blocking all scripts unless allowed. These can be inconvenient. But, if you think of it from an attackers perspective, a browser is a tool. Which automatically runs scripts on their computer allowing you to pull off pretty sophisticated attacks. Making sure Windows Settings can also help allot: Make sure your system is frequently patched. It not being patched gives attackers options, as previously discovered vulnerabilities can be exploited if your system isn't patched. Don't install software you don't need. Every piece of software and every program is an entry point if vulnerable. Make sure UAC is enabled, and if possible don't run as administrator/root unless you need too. Disable File Sharing and IPV6 if you don't need or use it. IPV6 can be exploited on Windows. If you use file sharing make sure its password encrypted. If you don't use RDP disable remote connections and if you don't use powershell. Make sure running scripts is disabled. Make sure to never let any program you don't trust run as root. It could cause quite allot of damage. Also keep in mind viruses aren't just .exe files. They can be hidden in images, run in text files, batch files, VBS scripts and even be third party scripts such as Python and Ruby, which antivirus software doesn't protect against, unless the heuristics are top notch. What Should You Take From This? Only the stuff you think you could use, I don't even do all of this. This is pretty basic stuff, but can make a difference. Keep in mind too, that safe browsing habbits and common sense doesn't protect you. Your brain does. The best protection is access control. So, its best to lock everything down. Think of it like this. Because you have connections coming in and out of your computer all the time its almost like letting strangers into your house. Do you leave your house completely open to them or be smart and lock certain doors and make sure the locks change every so often to people cant break the locks over time. -If there is anything you want to add, tell me and i will add it Thanks!

IM FINALLY BUILDING A CUSTOM PC.....WEW!!!!!!! I just need to know a bit more info until i dive headfirst into building it. Any tips and trick with build a pc (RVZ01 is the case im building in) would be welcome as this is my first build haha. Tips on how like not to break stuff, Static electricity, common mistakes not to make that kind of thing. Also do you usually only need a phillips head screwdriver or do you usually need more? So guys, I recently purchased a G3258 as an upgrade to my old Athlon II x4 640. If anyone saw my last post, the idea was to eventually update to a Broadwell, or if those tanked, Devils Canyon i5/i7, and to push as much performance out of the G3258 as I could so that it would hold up as long as I needed it. Just for reference, this is the motherboard I ended up going with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130771 Anyways,about a week after I've gotten it, and I've pushed to to the reaches of my knowledge. I have it sitting stable at 4.5 Ghz,at 1.255 volts. Just for future reference, I also purchased a custom cooler, at Hyper Evo 212. Under Prime95, the max temp I've seen is about 74*c running for about 5 hours, and gaming seems to hold up as well. I had it sitting at 4.6,but the temps were reaching low 80*s at about 1.28 volts, and I didn't know if pushing the chip that far was a good idea. Some pics for proof/settings. Any pro tips for a relatively inexperienced overclocker?

Independent developers have been working on a new instruction Library for CPUs called Yeppp! for sometime, the main goal of this new library is to create a compiler that is optimized for all CPU platforms, including Intel, AMD & ARM. This was driven by the intentional sabotage lead by intel against AMD CPUs via "dirty" compilers that would cripple AMD CPU performance by up to 100%. In layman's terms what the intel compilers do is if they want to calculate the value of 2, they feed the code 1+1=2 to intel CPUs, and feed the code 1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1+ 0.1+ 0.1+0.1=2 to AMD CPUs, clearly the bad code will make the calculations run significantly slower. And software developers are forced to use these compilers, because there is no alternative, except now Yeppp! is emerging. You can read about these compilers in more detail here & here

I purchased FTL during the Steam Summer Sale and so far i've been enjoying it a lot. I've logged about 8+ hours into it just trying to beat it, still enjoying it though. It's a really fun game and worth every penny. Although there still seems to be that one thing that bugs me about this game, I can't beat it. I've played many games over the years and I tend to beat most of them starting out on medium, or higher, the game not being too hard for me to play. It's just that FTL is a lot harder than any other game that I have played. At first I first started out on medium not knowing what to expect, after a couple hours I realized that the game is a bit difficult so I had to resort to playing on EASY. It's still a fun game, don't get me wrong, I find something new every time I try to beat it. I'm just really struggling on the game and would like some help. After searching the forum for a bit I have yet to see a post like this or anything similar for tips on FTL.I made this new topic to try to help me and anyone else having trouble with the game. I hope people who need help or someone who can help will see this and help out. Things that I have come across that I always keep in mind. • Try to upgrade to blast doors early in the game.-- I have found that I get a lot of intruders board my ship and they always pry my doors open with ease if I do not upgrade. When I do it gives me much more time to drain out the air in their rooms. • If possible have a crew member at each of the stations for improvement.-- The four that can have a worker I place there, the bridge, the engine room, the weapons room, and the shields room. Also keep in mind the species of the person you place at the stations. I like placing Engies and humans on stations first. • Prioritize your weapons.-- Shooting their shields first is nearly always a good idea, especially when in an astroid field. Go for the oxygen if you can spare it. • ALWAYS keep an eye on your supplies, you don't want to be left stranded without an fuel or spare parts. • Try to fill up your ship with crew members.-- If you're in a tough battle and a fire breaks loose in a room you don't want to have to send in someone who's busy running the engines. You can always use spare crew members to clean up during or after a battle. Please try and add on to the list of tips, and try not to give away any spoilers.
