I figure I may aswell do thermal paste when I disassemble and reassemble my y50-70. Its internal temps were a bit hot anyways. What paste would you recommend for a noob and a an old laptop. How often should you do thermal paste? Does my Legion 5-17IMH05H - Type 81Y8 from 2021 need thermal paste if it still runs cool? Ive heard thermal grizzly mentioned, is it good for y50-70/legion 5? After owning the XFX 5700XT Thicc III for over 3 years nows, and with the warranty period over, I became curious on replacing the stock thermal paste which had probably outlived its use. This post is just a show of sorts to anyone who is interested, and I’m happy to report I have reduced thermals by 10-12 degrees when running tests like Unigine Heaven, 3D Mark etc. my junction temps before were around the 80-85, with the new thermal paste, maxing out at 72-73 on a 1800 under-clock with low noise fans. I’m still tweaking the settings and hope to increase my fps without sacrificing visuals. I also plan to watercool the XFX Thicc III at a later date, and try that for a change, as a search online looks like its a rare occurrence. It’ll be my first time watercooling but I’ve always wanted to try it.

I'm trying to figure out an affordable way to improve my Thinkpad T440p's cooling without breaking the bank so I done some research over the year and bought some cheap laptop heatpipes for testing. So I think I came up with a plan. My T440p has a 00HM903 dGPU fan so I plan to use a pair of copper heatpipes (one 7cm and one 6cm) to bridge between the CPU and GPU heatblocks. After finding a way to remove the paint safely from the affected areas of the stock cooler without damaging the pipes, I will use Honeywell PTM7950 padding to make contact between the cooler and new pipes to ensure optimal heat transference and then I will use the TechIngredients thermal epoxy to glue the sides to the cooler, sealing the PTM7950 padding inside. My rough plan for modifying my T440p's cooler. Keeping the new heatpipes straight, I'd only bend them ever slightly vertically to make sure both ends can touch the heatblocks. I figured a second extra heatpipe would help transfer more heat from the CPU to the GPU heatblock. Notice the copper/graphene heatsink on top of the CPU heatblock. In theory, this should provide maximum thermal performance with the best of both worlds - thermal compound and adhesive. I will also apply this principal to install some extra heatsinks to the CPU heatblock. Of course, this is all just theory so far which is why I wanted to bring this up here for any feedback and advice. Thank you.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the LTT Forums so hopefully this is an ok place to post. I currently own a Razer Blade 15 Advanced with an i7-10875H and an RTX 3070 (95W TDP) and I've had it for about two and a half years. About every 6 months, I open it up and clean the dust out of the fans and the heatsink using compressed air, but I have noticed recently that the CPU is idling at about 70 to 80 degrees Celsius even after most of the dust is removed (at least from what I can see). The GPU idles around 50 degrees which I'm not worried about. When I first bought it, it was idling at around 30 to 50 degrees and cleaning it would help a bit, but over time it still seems to be getting hotter. I don't live in a dusty environment and the ambient temperature is always around 20 degrees at the moment. The temperature is not currently a problem unless I load it (and then I just figure it's a laptop so I'm expecting throttling and 95 to 100 degrees anyway), but it is currently winter where I live and it might become more of a problem in summer. Should I be looking to replace the thermal paste? I am comfortable with doing so, but I would rather avoid doing it if it isn't necessary since laptop components are particularly delicate. My laptop is also my only computer. Are there any other ways I can decrease my temperatures while still maintaining performance? I have seen that some solutions involve undervolting, but I have little experience with altering voltages and clock speeds. At least from what I can see, there is not a huge amount of information about this online, and what is there appears dependent on specific hardware and situations. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a lenovo ideapad 3 for 2 years and i am going to replace the thermal compound in it because it has been running a little bit hot. It has a core i5-10210U cpu and mx130 gpu. I play nfs most wanted 2012 occasionally and use it for watching movies and doing school projects. I have considered using the honeywell ptm7950 but it is not available in my counter and is too expensive. So, what would be a good thermal compound for my laptop?

Hello, first time posting here. I was wondering what in your opinion is tue best thermal pads, paste, and Liquid Metal for Pc use. From what I found most companies like thermal grizzly make all these claims but don’t actually give the numbers or even have their product be sold by any retailers

Hi all, My video card failed recently, so I bought an Asus NVidia GTX 1050 Ti. As you can tell, I am not a high end gamer. The stock cooler was noisy, so I decided to replace it with the cooling solution of the failed card. I have seen this on this channel so had some confidence I could make this work. This took some creativity. I had to file the stand-off screws a bit to reduce the clearence between the GPU chip and the heatsink. I had some Noctua NT-H1 thermalpaste left over. So I applied this directly to the NVidia chip (die). Everything worked like a charm and I enjoyed the silence. Cooling performance was even better than with the original stock asus cooler. The old one had heatpipes, the stock one not, so that makes sense. This morning, the PC hanged during the BIOS. POST beep is normal, but then everything just stops. The screen is on, I can see the bios messages. Yep, replaced the graphicscard with an old one and everything worked fine again. So I reopened the graphics card and did two things: I used too much thermal paste. Some spilled over and was covering the capacitors next to the chip. It is non conductive, so this should not matter, but I cleaned it up anyway. I filed off a small piece of the standoffs, the particular part had a smaller diameter. This means that the new standoffs are a bit wider in diameter and were touching some of the traces on the PCB. There is a soldermask there, but since the edges could be a bit sharp and punch through, I added a small piece of delicately cut high temperature resistant electrical tape between the standoffs and the PCB. Everything booted just fine. Stress tests gave good results. I gave myself a virtual medal in on the spot Swiss army knive DIY repair. My guess was that the stand-offs were the culprit. PC worked fine all day. So half an hour ago I powered the machine up again and it hanged again. So I did the routine, and found that there was, again, some thermal paste over the capacitors. Cleaned it up. I did not touch the electrical tape on the standoffs. And everything booted again. So to conclude this long story, it looks like the noctua thermal paste is not entirely non-conductive. Well, nothing is really. My guess is that there is some high impedance point on the interposer that is influenced by the high but not high enough resistivity of the thermal paste. I am not sure though. As an electronics engineer, I have some difficulty believing this since it would mean that this part of the PCB is designed a bit clumsy (too resistive pull-ups, ...). Not the kind of clumsiness you'd expect from pros that routinely make PCBs for high end electronics. Does anyone have a similar experience? Does anyone have an idea about the electrical conductivity of noctua NT-H1? I would love to hear your thoughts. Sincerely, Jef

Hello anyone seeing this post for about 1,5 years i have been using a stock amd cooler with preaplied paste for my 5600x but about 3 months ago my little brothers cpu died (he have the same parts, build the same time too) and yesterday i tried something along the same as he described when he's died. i then took my pc apart and got it to work again but when i took the cooler of my cpu the thermal paste was very flakey so i would like if you guys could recommend some paste i would like more than one for different options (no budget for it) i have looked at mx-6 kryonaut and kryonaut extreme. i also think i might upgrade cooler to a 280 liquid in not long Thansk alot in advance

Hi there, unfortunately some thermal paste got on a few pins of my AM4 CPU. I've tried to clean it with spiritus ( alcohol ), but i couldnt remove all off it. The tip of the pins and upper part are free from paste. But at the little dots, where the pins are soldered to the CPU is covered by a small layer of thermal compound. The final question is, could the small layer of compound demage the CPU ? Thank You !

I noticed this on amazon from ARCTIC so thought I would give it a shot. Not able to to extensive comparisons but here is what it looks like. Temps seem a bit better then MX-4, has not launched yet so I can't find any real info. This one is blue instead of the usual grey. Anyone try this out yet? It was cheaper then MX-4 when I got it.

So i’m upgrading a prebuilt and bought the cooler master 212 black edition which came with a small tube of mastergel pro paste. I’ve ordered some arctic mx4 on amazon however it’s took ages to ship even with prime. Is it worth it for me to wait to see if the mx4 arrives or is there not much difference between the two pastes. I’ve seen a comparison between the two however they used a ryzen 3 3100 with a stock ryzen cooler so it’s hard to see what the temps would be like with my i7 9700f and 212 cooler.

Hello, I just got my second hand GTX 1080 and in tests like Heaven benchmark and Furmark it gets close to 90 degrees. I also tested it in Dota 2 and there it stays around 70 degrees. I think it's a good idea to change the thermal paste but why not change the pads ass well. The problem is i couldn't find anywhere what pads I need. So what thickness should they be and is there something more to it that i should know? Thanks in advance!

Hello everybody, I recently mounted a Noctua U12S Chromax into my 9700k and when I installed it I didn't pay attention to the manual and didn't screw the two screws that keep the cooler in place in the secufirm2 bracket. I screwed the right side almost completely but the mounting mechanism wouldn't let me screw all the way unless I went back to zero to screw it properly. Anyways, my only worry is the following: By heavily screwing only on a side, I assume i spread the thermal much more on a side than the other, and because of that, can it leak into the socket if this if the amount I put? Here is a photo of the amount:

Hey all, So i need something to wipe off the thermal paste off my CPU and CPU cooler. I don't have much options but i found this https://www.hepsiburada.com/star-izopropil-alkol-c3h7oh-sprey-1-lt-p-HBV00000RG64Q?magaza=starkimya It says 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol but please do take a look for yourself as well, don't rely on my word You guys can use Google translate, since even i don't understand much Turkish for now But please help me in deciding if this is safe for cleaning the thermal paste off the CPU ? I need urgent advice as i have to order today I will be grateful for your kind advice

Good day to all. May I ask the thermal enthusiasts here? Is this Thermal Paste good enough? Or better at least than the stock thermal paste on my Ryzen 5 2600? I'm currently having 75°C max / full load on my CPU while using the stock cooler. I bought this thermal paste a while now, for just only $6. Is this good enough to replace my out-of-the-box pre-applied thermal paste on my Ryzen 5 2600? Thank you in advance to you all. God bless!

After repasting my old laptop (lenovo y700) with thermal grizzly hydronaut, it works fine for a couple of days and temps are awesome, after a week or so of heavy gaming gpu temps start to rise until it throttles. I open the laptop and I notice that thermal paste on the gpu is stting on side with the other side barely covered (pics), tried to reapply it works fine for another week then it happens again.

After watching LTT's video on cooling SSD's, I've been thinking... Lately, I did a little experiment. I have a dead 2.5" SSD, that I took apart, lying around in my house along with some tubes of Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. I applied some paste on, what I presume, is the controller chip and put it all back together to see if the aluminium case makes contact with the paste. After opening it again, I found out that it does. But like I said, it was a dead SSD so I can't test it and I don't want to try thermal paste on any of the drives I'm already using in case something goes wrong. Still how does it sound?

Hey, I have some questions regarding my GTX 970 Windforce G1. I opened it because it desperately needed some cleaning and I figured now is a good time for changing the thermal paste as it wouldn't hurt too much if something goes wrong. 1.) Cleaning the residue around the GPU dye isn't necessary right? I wanted to get it off but Q-tips+rubbing alcohol or a soft brush+rubbing alcohol didn't work and i didn't want to exert to much force because of those little transistors (the little silver dots on the picture?) next to it. 2.) I removed the backplate from the GPU and there were these sticky around pads around the holes for the screws. What are these for and do I need to replace them. They are on the holes of the 4 center screws on the backplate. 3.) I need to replace the thermal pads. Can i just contact Gigabyte and they tell me which pads I need? I had a quick look into thermal pads on GPUs and it seems getting the right pads for a card isn't easy as there isn't much info on it. 4.) What is this residue on the back of the pcb? I bought the card in 2015 second hand from someone and now I'm wondering if this stuff is from maybe water cooling it? Thanks in advance :)

Hello. I want to replace my Msi Geforce GTX970 4GD5T OC's thermal paste. Currently the temps goes up to 85C in gaming on 100% power limit,100% Fan speed and 91C temp limit on the MSI Afterburner. And It crosses 90C on Furmark stress test. I live in Bangladesh and it's really a hot country. Currently my room temperature maybe 35-37C. Here I have Corsair TM30,XTM50,Coolermaster MasterGel regular,Deepcool Z4,Z5,Z10,G15 Thermal pastes in my budget options.I don't intend to spend more on thermal paste(Like Noctua NT-H2) rather I want to on Casing fans. So,Which thermal paste would be a wise option?

Hello, Last year I built my pc and had a r5 3600xt running on its stock cooler, at idle it hovered around 60 degrees Celsius and would push up to high 90s. a few weeks ago I decided to upgrade the cooler to a NZXT m22 AIO. It is only a 120mm rad but I thought the aesthetics was worth running a few degrees hotter. However even though I have 3 140mm intake fans and, one 140mm exhaust fan and the AIO acting as a exhaust all at full speed, I'm still running at 60c at idle and maxing out at 95c on Cinebench R23. Even after shutting of half of my cores and running my cpu at 2200mhz I still idle in the high 50 degrees Celsius Is this normal? ( I haven't overclocked it) Can I under volt my CPU to solve this problem? Will more thermal paste help (I used the stock thermal paste pre applied it doesn't cover the whole CPU but it looks to be enough ) Should I place the rad as an intake? The case is a dark base 700 (Front panel off for air flow) Pump it at full speed (I have a 3070 but its running cool)

Hi I've a MSI GE62 6qd apache pro and lately my temps have been bad while fans are at max speed. It has never been repasted since the 7 years I've had it. I've decided I'm going to repaste it but also want to replace the thermal pads while I have it apart. Only a issue is that I don't know what size and thickness to get for the thermal pads. Also tips on thermal paste and pads are always welcome. I won't put liquid metal on it as I'm always caring it around and don't want to risk breaking it or having to redo it every year.
