Hey LTT NAS enthusiasts. I'm considering purchasing a Synology NAS to set up RAID 10. Is there a way to specify in their software which drives RAID 1 mirrors and which ones RAID 0 stripes? Long story short, I have 6 drives, 3 from WD and 3 from Seagate, same capacity & specs . I want to ensure that mirror drives in a set aren't from the same vendor. If such a thing isn't possible via software, would alternating them while inserting into the bay do the trick? I'm a little worried that Synology might randomly pick drives for mirroring, and I'd end up with 2 drives from the same vendor purchased from the same batch, increasing the likelihood of 2 drive failure and RAID 10 non-recoverability. Apologies if someone has already answered this. I've searched for this info in various forums and the Synology manual but couldn't find an answer.. Thank you

Hi all, we have recently finally started using our DS923+ at work for more than just a backup solution for Microsoft 365. We've freed up almost 500GB of our available 1.15TB on SharePoint. So now we have some breathing room and are no longer paying Microsoft's insane $0.20/GB pricing. That's all great, but now that data (mostly archival data that does not get touched) no longer lives in the cloud, it's no longer being backed up by the NAS, so I need a method to back it up. Our DS923+ is currently loaded with 2x8TB Seagate Ironwolf drives in an SHR mirror. We have 2 more identical drives as cold spares. We have 4.4TB of free space with 2.6TB used. I do not foresee us filling up this NAS for at least 3 years. We do not have the budget to buy another NAS. I could buy one personally and backup the work NAS, but I already have a small home media server and do not need the features of Synology NASs. I have a 4TB WD Blue drive that I could put in an enclosure and do USB copies regularly (or I can use one of our cold spare NAS drives). (This is my leading option right now I think.) I could convince work to pickup yet another subscription, and use a provider like Backblaze B2 storage at $6/TB/m. The problem with this is we have cable internet at the office, with only 40Mbps of upload, so this is not optimal.

I'm new to servers, so I'm looking for recommendations that would fulfill my purposes. I'm trying to use the NAS for file storage, virtualizing OSs, and hosting a media server like Plex. I was thinking of getting a 4-bay server and filling 2 slots with 16TB 7200RPM drives so I have both adequate size and future upgradeability. It's also not required, but being able to have an NVMe drive as a cache would definitely be nice. I have heard that the DS923+ is a solid option but If anybody knows of any systems as well as drive options that would work well for my purposes i'd appreciate the advice.

So, just got my DS224+ for family photo only, as I was learning from YouTube, I got lost in the instructions tutorial, so I not paying attention that made me create one manual account Synology Account via iCloud email and then the other via the continuation of the setup that uses Apple ID by hiding my email. so how do we deal with it? Should we delete the Synology Account that uses a manual iCloud account or how?

Hey All, I am hoping somewhere here can help me out. I run a very basic small Synology NAS (DS-218J) at home for media. I recently filled it and added a second drive but the capacity has not increased. The original HDD was 2TB and the new one was 4TB. I added it to the same pool but it now defaulted to SHR raid type (Synology specific I believe) which only allows one drive capacity and it's using the already full drive. I want to use either JBOD or Raid 0 to get the full capacity but the function to change the Raid type is greyed out as you can see in the second image below. Any idea how I can resolve this as I now have a new HDD that's wasted? The system only has two drive bays by the way and both are now filled. Thanks for any help in advance Storage Pool Info: Greyed out Raid options:

Hi guys, So i have installed Jellyfin on my Sysnology NAS. I am able to connect to the Jellyfin server over port 49159, but when i try and connect as a client on the default port of 8096 it says it cant connect to the server. As the server is sitting in its own LAN (My server LAN which is separate from my User LAN), i have traffic visibility to it from my Palo Alto. As i can connect to it over port 49159 i know network connectivity is not the issue. The Palo logs shows the traffic to port 8096 and its allowed but im getting 'tcp-rst-from-server' so there jellyfin is seeing the traffic but dropping it basically. I changed the port to something else and tried again, still with the same result. I have stopped and restarted the server and did a uninstall and re install, same results. I have done a port scan and indeed, port 8096 is not open on the server. Any ideas? TIA

Hello all, I'm setting up a DS923+ to store my jobs cold files. Mostly pictures, finished reports, excel docs, old invoices, etc. We can remotely access this data via Synology Drive/QuickConnect fairly well. I also completely forgot that Active Backup for M365 exists which really takes this NAS to the next level for us. I'm waiting to start the first backup job until I've moved our cold storage files onto the NAS. We are trying to operate with less than 1TB in SharePoint to get our bill down since additional SharePoint Storage is like $0.20 per GB per month which is insane. As a first time Synology and NAS user and the only extremely non-professional IT person at the company (we only have 8 people) I'm looking for any advice or common mistakes to avoid for this use case. Also, I'm moving our data and configuring Active Backup for M365 at home since I have faster internet than our office and I currently don't have a car, so I'm wondering what kind of issues there may be from moving the NAS to a new network once I do get it in office, thanks!

Hi all, so I was about to pull the trigger on a NAS for our small office. But I noticed that the drives included in this B&H Photo bundle w/ the DS923+ and 4x8TB Seagate IronWolf NAS Drives (SEST8000VN4) are not on the "approved/compatibility" list, and in fact there are almost 0 drives that are on this list. So what gives and what will happen by not using "approved" drives? Thanks!

Hello all, I'm going to be deploying a Synology DS923+ in our office to act as an archival server to accommodate our old/unused SharePoint files. One thing I'm curious about is getting a UPS for this NAS. I know it is possible for a Mac to connect to a UPS via USB and auto shutdown when the UPS kicks in and the Mac will gracefully shut down. I would like to know if the DS923+ has this capability as well? A UPS does not really do us much good if someone has to be there to quickly shut it off if we lose power.

Do you guys think if Synology offered the option to re-flash the bios of older (or even newer) NAS products with a variant that opens the platform up to versions of linux/bsd, that this could not only mitigate the bad press, but also foster a burgeoning enthusiast modding community around resuscitating these machines? I wholly support maintaining an archive of archaic DSM revs, but I feel like having these things open to a Gentoo or Arch playground would be an awesome alternative to a landfill.

I recently updated my home network system since I got a Synology ds1522+ for video editing. But a bonus I was excited about was being able to fully utilize the 800 down I pay for from Xfinity. However, when I got the system up and running I noticed that whenever I download anything I can get it to go faster than 72mbps. Testmy.net was giving me a top download of 923mbps the 3 tests I've done downloading have been from: WeTransfer: 18mbps Google Drive: 69mbps Steam: 79mbps My system is a NETGEAR - Nighthawk 32 x 8 -> google wifi router -> NETGEAR Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS308) all wiring is cat6. Im kinda stumped as to why my speeds aren't lining up. Any suggestions?

Hey guys! So I've been thinking of getting a NAS for a long time now, looking into forums, websites... to find all sorts of information. But now I'm at a point where I can't see the wood for the trees anymore. I would like your guys help/opinion on my question "Can I go for a NAS with what I want?" with the following information. + maybe other solutions to help me with my goal. (FYI: going for a DIY Raspberry Pi build or DIY NAS build is an option too) I would like a way to stream my local video's at least 1080p via Plex on my TV/smartphone/tablet I would like a solution for storing photo's from multiple smartphones to the NAS and being able to view them anywhere (Google Photos is getting full and I don't want to pay for that) Main focus would be with an app like Google Photos with features like facial rec, timeline... (Plex Pass?) 2 bays or 4 bays If further information is needed, please ask. Thanks for your help, community!

I have set up an openvpn on my synology. When I connect on my phone I get the ip 192.168.2.6. There is a Raspberry Pi on my local network on a differnet subnet with the ip 192.168.1.223. I want to open a connection between the two so while I'm on my vpn I can access my pi. How would I go about doing this?

Hi. I'm still exploring my new NAS, it's a DS220+ with the latest DSM 7, it's really my father's, I'm setting it up for him, and I'm having some trouble using Synology Photos. First I've been trying this "DS Photo" app on the Microsoft Store but it wont let me in and I can't find any other threads about this problem. I'm using all the right credentials, my QuickConnect ID, User and Password but it always spits out the same error "Connection failed with DiskStation. Check the network connection or the IP address" something like that translated from my language interface. So I hope there's a way to make this app work, I'm not even sure it's the official one but what other alternatives do I have to use my Synology Photos without going into DSM everytime. I don't have anything against DSM but my f****g Edge browser just wont autofill in the password, and I'm trying to use secure long passwords that I have to copy and past everytime from an Excel spreadsheet. On youtube I'm seeing a ton of videos praising and kissing ass about how great is the new Synology Photos app (I agree too, don't get me wrong) but not even one mentioning how to actually access it except from DSM.

Hi. I'm taking my first steps with my new Synology DS220+ and I have a quick trouble accessing the DSM portal with my browser Edge. All the users accounts are registered in Edge memory, it recalls the accounts when I log in but it wont fill in the passwords so I have to go and copy paste them every time from the settings window, which is now very often while I'm setting everything up. Is there a way to make it recall them automatically like it does with anything else? Now if I log in with more new users I'm creating I'm not even getting prompted to remember the new accounts. Does this has anything to do with the fact that edge is warning the the connection to this page is not safe? Thanks.

Hi everyone! My next upgrade to my home setup will be a NAS, and I have decided for it to be a Synology NAS. I need the NAS to be able to hold up to 4x HDDs. More than 4 would be awesome but they very expensive, so 4 will do. I will mainly use it to store data. I would like to experiment with Plex but I am not buying a NAS for plex. I would like the hardware to be pretty good but doesn't have to be top spec. Currently I have my eyes on the DS920+. I like it because of the Quad core CPU it comes with, it has dual Ethernet, can have up to 4x HDDs. Also, which is not as important but, I like how it looks. Would the DS920+ be a good choice or? Is 4GB of RAM enough? Thanks

Hello. I just bought a Synology DS220+, I've set it up following some guides but I'm having a stupid little problem I cannot find a solution to. I've entered my NAS from the Windows File Explorer (\\"name of my nas"). At the login Window I've entered my credentials no problem but now I need to log out and log back in with another user. I've set up 4 different users so far including an account for administration only but I'm now stuck with one user only and I cannot find out how to do this simple procedure. Pls help, I'm still a noob at this..

Can anyone explain to me the right way, or let's just say, the "go to" way to access my files from my Synology NAS while outside of my network? What are the substantial differences between using: a direct access to Synology File Station from a browser Using the Synology Drive app direct connection to my NAS as a remote network drive in windows files explorer I know that however I decide to connect remotely it will involve using Synology Quickconnect or either using a VPN. In my case I prefer to use Synology's own services because I'm not considering paying for a VPN yet, so Quickconnect it is. I have my NAS already mapped as a network drive in windows file explorer when I'm in the network and it's extremely intuitive because it's just one more drive in my PC, that's why the dillemma came on what to do instead when I'm accessing the NAS remotely. Thanks.

Hello everyone, nice to meet you all. I was watching a Linus Synology NAS video a few months back and I thought "Wow great product". I went on buying a 1 Disk NAS from Synology (Can't handle the budget for a 4 disk yet) and everything run smoothly since recently I found a super weird issue that I have never seen before. Give me some time to expand the issue because it is weird. You'll see. We have 2 different shared folders and in them we have 2 different files:* \\NAS1\Data\DOC LIB\PROJECT\video_bla_bla_bla.mp4 \\NAS1\video\NewFilms\A_total_legaly_downloaded_movie.mkv First one is a video of a project. Second is a Movie. (duh). A few days ago I went on to open the movie file because it was sitting there for a long time aaaaaand… the Video bla bla started playing. I was like. WT*? Before talking to synology support I tried copying files renaming etc but nothing. Having synology support help we did the bellow: 1. Send a debug.dat file that synology support checked out and according to the support response “I analysed your debug file but I did not find any filesystem errors or issues that could indicate problems with your NAS.” 2. Tried different players with no different result 3. Mapped both Shared Folders to check if we get a different result but nothing. 4. Cleared the SMB cache but no result. 5. Tried comparing the size, format, length, etc, in File Station and Windows explore for both files but results were normal but also strange with the outcome of playing the file. The results are: Video bla bla 1,13GB Video movie 8,73 GB** Both times either I run .mp4 file or .mkv file - each from the corresponding location - I get a 36 minutes 53 seconds video. Both times the content of the video is the “Video bla bla”. That time length is normal for the bla bla video but not the movie. Synology has no clue what is going on and now they are asking for remote access. While sending the debug file was “OK” the co-users of the NAS is NOT ok with giving remote access. Honestly I am not a big fan too. Has anyone ever experienced anything like that? The loss of that file is not the problem. I can download the file again. My biggest fear is that this could happen to other business files, PDF's, payment receipts etc. Thanks in advance. *names and paths slightly changed for ease of use in the thread **If I remember correctly it was a 4K version of the film and the movie is 2 hours long. That's why the file is so big.
