  1. I was looking for some info on my Gateway VX920 from 2001 but, I could not find a whole lot browsing around and all the links I have found on old forum threads no longer exist, then it hit me, The WayBack Machine. With the WayBack Machine I was able to find the Gateway's website form 2001 and navigate through archived pages to find the lost specs and info that I was looking for. So, has anyone else used the Wayback Machine from web.archive.org to research old products for specs and other info that is too hard to find? Also, I found out my monitor cost $500 back in 2001.
  2. I'm currently a graduate student in the US. I'm in the market for a desktop workstation that can handle day-to-day tasks such as Office, Web browsing, etc. as well as analyzing large amounts of data on applications such as, MaxQuant, R, and Perseus. I would prefer a small-form factor, however, this is not a necessity. My upper budget limit is $1,500. Thank you in advance for you suggestions!
  3. Sources: RTÉ Irish Times From the articles: That's a fair point. Sport science is a big field and there is a lot of research going on in soccer or American Football, but eSports is mostly ignored or labelld as not being a 'real sport'. He also raises the point that eSport had a massive grow in the last couple of years and that professional players can earn a lot of money. So it makes sense to figure out why some players are so good and others aren't. Plus it could be fun if they create some scale, so you could scientifically show how much your opponent sucks. Oh boy, more ergonomic keyboards and mice reviews! But there are many theories about your optimal setup, which mouse sensitivity is the best, monitor refresh rates, ... Some of them are regularly addressed in a LTT video. So it's nice to see that full-time, professional researches are now also looking into those things, too. The lab just opened, so it makes sense that they grabbed their first data set form those 'international events', but I think that not many armatures played at those events. So, yeah, this Lab just got create, but I'll definitively keep an eye on them to see what results will come out of that.
  4. I was recently given a GTX 1080 Ti by a very generous friend, and I want to build a system that can take advantage of it. My budget is around US$1000 for the rest of the PC. I'm a computer scientist and a major multitasker, so I almost always have over 100 tabs open in Chrome along with a lot of programs (I definitely need more than 16 GB of RAM). I'll be starting my graduate research in a couple months, and I'll be doing some heavy image/video processing and graphics work. I also do photography, so I will be spending a lot of time in Lightroom and Photoshop. I have an old 1080p monitor that suits my general needs fine, but I would gladly take recommendations for a more color-accurate display for <$300. Having a high refresh rate or Gsync isn't important to me. I'm a casual gamer, at best, so I don't anticipate using my PC to play games very often. Even then, I won't be playing any intensive AAA titles. Additionally, I don't care about the looks of the system at all--so no RGB or see-through case side panel. I would like a micro-ATX board/case if possible, since I don't think I'll ever fill it up with more than one hard drive and one PCIe card. Fan noise also isn't a big deal to me, so I'd like a CPU cooler that can allow some minor overclocking without being over-the-top. I'd like an NVMe SSD too, at least 512 GB. I think a Ryzen 7 2700x might be a good choice for the processor, but should I wait and get the 3700x? Or just go with the 2700x after the 3700x comes out and there's a price drop?
  5. I've been a fan a long time but I never thought I'd have this opportunity lol! I did it mostly for the luls and because my professor is a nerd who will probably get a kick out of it. It's for a grade, not an academic journal, but still I thought it was funny. Also it was just weird to me that I happened to be researching net neutrality all day and then in the middle of the WAN show the guys are talking about the thing I was reading about all day? Edit: link to entire paper. Don't judge too harshly I put about a B effort into it lol https://drive.google.com/file/d/12Nf1JHEJsnv8ZAR3mEzd8Ts1NqXOjQok/view?usp=sharing
  6. Hi there, my name is Kilian. Im currently studying 3D Art and Animation and im part of a project group called "Project 0814". We are a group of 5 people from the university and we want to start a indie company and develop our first game. By doing this survey we hope to get an in depth view of the current gaming market and extracting a potential consumer group. 8. Researchers of the University of Utah have successfully built a cluster of five Microsoft XBox One. Inspired by the various clusters built from PlayStation 3s, this monster machine is ready to take on the most demanding tasks. Don Dufrene, head of the laboratory, tells us: "We originally intended to build a much larger cluster, but could not provide financing. Thanks 'bama." Therefore, the team took all consoles acquired so far and connected them - with stunning results. "We are now able to run the latest and most demanding games with this." However, further refinement will go into the system because the scientists are not quite satisfied with the performance so far. "Take Battlefield 4 for instance. The game runs smooth, but quite often we encounter problems like massive lag, graphical errors or sudden instant deaths that happen for no particular reason. If we put enough effort into it, the system should be capable of running the game the way the developer made it. On the other hand, we are already able to enjoy the beauty of Assasin's Creed: Unity on the hightest settings, frame by frame. Fantastic!" The team have future plans, too. Given proper financial means, they could try to reduce the massive heat output that the cluster currently struggles with. Alternatively, research could clarify why Apple's iPhones run smoother than competitor's devices, even though it features less powerful components. Dufrene: "This appears to be quite a mystery, and thorough investigation could help a broad understanding of the matter."
  9. EurekAlert reports that Engineering researchers at the Columbia University if Engineering and Applied Science have discovered a way to have a WiFi chip transmit and receive on the same frequency on a single antenna simultaneously, massively increasing the throughput capacity. I think this is great. It can only mean further improvements in wireless technology and the researchers at the university have something to be proud of. EE Times say that funding is being provided so that carriers are encouraged to adopt the technology so that it can be implemented more quickly and hopefully be put into effect relatively cheaply. Interesting stuff. 1. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2016-04/cuso-wcd041316.php 2. http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1329466
  10. Australian researchers at the University Of New South Wales have announce a new breakthrough that could bring viable quantum computing closer to reality, they have developed a quantum programming language that can take advantage of the quantum effect in quantum chips. Professor Andrea Morello, project leader, told The Sydney Morning Herald, "The advancement proves that we can write the most unique type of computer code that a quantum computer can support," "In other words, we have now shown that we can access the full 'quantum vocabulary' He further stated, "Things become more interesting when you have two quantum bits, like in the case of our experiment: there you can write '00', '01', '10','11' [like in an ordinary computer], but also combinations of them, like '00 + 11', '01 + 10', and so on," Morello says. It's not all good news however. Professor Andrew Greentree of RMIT University told Fairfax Media that this is by no means a silver bullet, "They've looked at entanglement between two spins on the same atom: one the spin of phosphorus nucleus, and the other the spin of a lone electron attached to the atom," he said. "This is not scalable, because the phosphorus really doesn't have any more spins. What they need is to entangle one phosphorus with the next phosphorus atom," Regardless, this is still viewed as an important step to bring quantum computing closer to reality. 11. An assignment to research this topic to find what you can about it
  12. Hey all, I'm currently researching new semiconductor materials for (eventual) use in computer and related technology (additional applications include solar cells, LEDs, optoelectronics, etc). However, my knowledge of computers is limited to what an entry level computer technician would know; I can build computers, work with peripherals, and explain how different parts of a computer work about 1/2 as well as Linus can, but that isn't sufficient for my work. What I want to know is, does anyone here bridge the gap on that knowledge base? Going from fundamental semiconductor knowledge to computer semiconductor technology? I really feel like I could improve my direction in research materials science if I knew how my semiconductors applied to RAM/Cache/bus speeds/processors/etc. Because my eventual goal would be to take something like the current cost prohibitive cache systems and make them as cheap as standard RAM (not entirely possible, but it can be much closer than it is). However, it'd be nice to hear someone say that it's actually worth the time. So do you think it is? If I could make a material that made cache 5-10 times cheaper, would we dump that much more memory on processors? Or is there another reason in addition to cost that it's prohibitive to just drop memory on the processor directly? I'm just as happy to hear that it's not going to make a significant improvement in tech, because that means I can move on and spend less time on the topic. But in general, I'd like to start some materials science talks here on what materials go into each computer component and why they're selected! I think that would be an awesome topic here. Cheers! A physics grad student
  13. Hey guys! I'm a fellow high school student who had to discover a topic that i hold interest in and develop a small research paper for it. I just wanted to ask you guys my question that I formulated and read your opinions and/or ideas. My question that i formulated(which you guys should be familiar with): To what extent does Moore's Law predict the evolution of computing? To answer this question i will be looking into the history of computing and using some computer science to formulate my assertion. REMEMBER i have to use history and computer science together to create the assertion. Therefore, i will look at the data of integrated circuits throughout time and elaborate upon subjects like quantum tunneling when the integrated circuits get too small. Also i ask that your input is valid and if you have sources that would be great. Thank you guys. If you wish to help me privately, email me at jerkingman@gmail.com (Its an old email... i use to do keep myself anonymous... please don't judge me)
  14. So that basic witchcraft on the new MacBook that lets you have a solid piece of aluminum function like a proper trackpad that clicks without having any movement is (ideally) coming to Apples own keyboards. Why? Who knows. A laptop keyboard that has no mechanism can help you shave even more off the thickness (Apple loves them thin things) but in a more serious way, it can probably solve a big problem with thinner keyboards - crappy response. I don't know about you guys, but a lot of laptop keyboards just don't have enough feedback. Having it all controlled through haptic feedback and letting you even configure what response a key gives when you press it? Very cool. Hopefully this escape the typical "we did it for the sake of patenting" and makes it into proper production. http://techcrunch.com/2015/03/19/apple-researching-taptic-feedback-for-keyboards-with-no-physical-keys/
  15. Hello forum! I see a lot of threads about which case is best or best bang for your buck, but I have a different question in mind and maybe it will help others out in someway. What do you guys look for in a case? What do you research when building a new PC or upgrading from a previous one? Do you normally stick with one manufacturer or go for whatever is good? The reason I asked is being so many good cases are out; the H440, 760T, 250D, etc. love to hear your guy's opinions!
  16. Hi there, So I've got a big procrastination problem. Any way to motivate myself to work on stuff and stop getting distracted? Thanks in advance...
  17. Original article: http://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2016-05-05-oxford-study-finds-virtual-reality-can-help-treat-severe-paranoia I am more than certain it is not the first time VR is sued in research, but definitely an interesting development. Also, VR didn’t help Jesse Cox with his fear of sharks and the Morpheus deo he had seen couple of months ago Any idea on what next could be researched using VR? I have couple already J
  18. "5D Data Storage by Ultrafast Laser Nanostructuring in Glass" is paper published by Zhang,Gecevicius, Beresna and Kazansky from the Optoelectronics Research Centre from the University of Southampton. They claim to have achieved a data density of 360TB per glass disc and a thermal stability up to 1000 deg. C. The data is stored using a 3D data-layout (think minecraft for bits) and using polarization as the 4th and the strength of the burned point as the 5th dimension. But : The Paper is full of buzzwords and vague in a few parts but it seems like a new research direction has been kicked off for the big storage companies. 19. This year in school I am required to complete a year long project that results in a final product and learned skills. I have decided that I want to learn parallel/multi-core programing. The linked form is for the sole purpose of deciding which language I should use for my project based on ease of use and possible support base (popularity). I would greatly appreciate if you guys, and gals, could fill out the included Google form to assist me with this research. Thanks, scorcher646 https://goo.gl/forms/mrTSilLs72idd64v2
  20. It's undeniable that we are lacking mostly on Single Core CPU Power, rather than GPU power. Der 8auer stated lately in an interview, that there will be some exciting new Technology coming at the end of the year addressing that issue. Der8auer said about gaming PC's: "We need higher clock rates, more efficiency, we do not need more cores". He argues that manufacturers should instead focus on performance and efficiency, IPC increases (Instructions per Clock). Hartung (Der8auer's last name) says that 5 GHz per core is the goal, but then it should be over. He says that the clock frequency is not the most important factor, but the efficiency of the architecture. Here he mysteriously referred to interesting hardware that is expected for the end of the year, but wanted or could not tell what exactly that is. 21. I saw a post recently about using OpenAI Universe and Gym to teach a self driving car in GTA V. Other articles say you can train AI to run Fold It. Could someone make a guide on how to do this. It would be amazing if I could run it on my pc when not in use to make generations of AI that hopefully get better at folding.
  22. Hello! I may be asking questions a lot in the forums, (maybe a few every month) and would greatly thank anyone who shares knowledge and links to research and study into. I've currently been looking into security and networking for the past few months and I've been extremely interested into a journey of studying while at ITEC college. Although I love researching into as much as I find and learning, I also like to ask questions (may be stupid ones too! ). I would like to ask if this is okay to ask as many questions on my mind in the forums, maybe it'd be easier to PM people instead of filling up the forums, or asking questions on this topic. I've been looking into some qualifications to further my studies and was told from my college teacher to look at CCENT and furthering onto CCNA. (Also CompTIA Networking, currently looking into CompTIA A+ on Wednesdays with another teacher in the college, although not gaining qualifications, he said he is willing to teach people who are interested). So, I do enjoy reading books, I personally find myself extremely distracted so I like being away from my computer if I try to study for more than 3+ hours. I'd like your opinion on any books/pdfs I can look into and grab on my studies. Any people that are interested in talking and sharing knowledge/answering questions would be a great welcome to PM.
  23. Image via: http://map.ipviking.com/ It should be no surprise to anyone that a massive number of network scans and penetration attempts originate from China. While taking a Network and Security course at Virginia Tech, our professor visualized all the attacks to our campus network overlaid onto Google Earth. A vast majority of the attacks came from roughly 3 places in China. The map lines originating from China were about 100 times thicker than from anywhere else, indicating the volume being 100 times higher from that IP/IP-block. Recently, Canadian officials claim that hackers working at the behest of the Chinese government gained access to Canada's NRC network -- not a surprising piece of news, considering the amount of cyber threats originating from China. The NRC, or National Research Council, is Canada's chief research and technology organization. While there is no evidence that points to any other networks of the Canadian government's infrastructure being infiltrated, the NRC network has now been isolated from the greater government system as a precaution. Tangential and peripheral (which often means less secured) networks are frequently used as an attack vector, allowing hackers to gain access to the larger juicier target they want to access. Image via www.asianews.it “Recently, the Government of Canada, through the work of the Communications Security Establishment, detected and confirmed a cyber intrusion on the IT infrastructure of the National Research Council of Canada by a highly sophisticated Chinese state-sponsored actor.” -- Corinne Charette, Canada’s Chief Information Officer The implications of this being a state sponsored attack as opposed to a hacker group or private corporation make this news story noteworthy. The Chinese government and industrial complex are known for having loose to blatantly nonexistent considerations for copyrights and patents. Clones of commercial products (from consumer electronics to knock-off Bentleys) and even military hardware-like drones are run-of-the-mill in China. So it makes sense that China would want to gain access to a nationally-backed research organization. Hopefully they didn't gain access to Canada's super-secret bagged milk super-soldier project! 24. Hey everyone, I need a recommendation for a handheld video camera for research into the movement of insect antennae. These are the things that the device should do: At least FHD resolution, more would be good Support 64bit recording (to avoid having multiple files) Optical zoom 30x or more would be good Tracking focus would be nice, depth of field about half an inch (the insects are in a petri dish) At least 50fps Good colour reproduction It shouldn't cost more than €2000. I hope someone can help me! Thanks in advance, John
  25. Early research on Apple's Health Records service suggests patients generally like it Source: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/13/researchers-release-the-first-data-on-apple-health-records-adoption.html This means access to their own database, which is updated right from the machines used to measure to measure the data. Hospitals have live records of clinical data, mainly for use by doctors to standardise practice and conformation of practice. Patients now have access to a sample of this data collated and converted into information for their use. Very cool and useful. Well, quite a lot of the problems tend to stem from that doctors are not quite up to speed with digital technology. Thats generally not what they study, so they need a better implementation of information. There have been numerous strides here in NZ, but Apple's Health app is a good solution for a ubiquitous approach. Information regarding standardisation of clinical outcomes ultimately improves patient outcomes. We can then know the right treatments for the patients and apply it to standard practice. Now if only there was a way to enforce standard practice. My opinion: Best thing since sliced cheese. Hopefully Android users will soon have the same access to Apple's database (One database is a lot better than two in this scenario, not an Apple vs Android thing - Apple has the edge by far when it comes to health. If we have two data sets, particularly with data from phones, this could mean duplicates if people have two phones. You might be thinking that in this regard Apple's health is taking information from the hospital database, but the health app also collects data on the Activity app, such data is also wanted - and would be centralised in Apple's Health app). If we can finally get a good data set like this, with live information feed, it will be very beneficial for research. Such a huge leap. [EDIT] So this would also might mean that if you go in for a blood test or urinalysis etc then the results would be on the Health App asap, and you would not need to go in or ring to access. Very important and key for quality of care.
