Hey all - like many I did not go stock on my cooling setup when building my PC and my daughter's PC. So I have two (2) AMD Wraith coolers, and one (1) gently used (for about 30 days) the other brand new. What do you all do with these? Chucking them seems like a waste, but they are just sitting in boxes on my shelf? Does anyone need a cooler I will send it to you for free if you are in North America? Any good ideas?

I hope phones and tablets is the right section to ask this. Background: I am upgrading to a new phone soon and will have a Galaxy S9 with no current use. Instead of buying a task specific streaming device for $100 that will stop working in a year or 2 and be e-waste I wanna try and use the device I already have. My goal is to use my s9, taking advantage of samsung dex, for my unused tv. I use Netflix, Disney+, Crave, and on occasion Kodi. I have a dongle that is good for short uses but it heats up to a point I am not comfortable with using it for a long time like this. What I need: I am looking for dongle recommendations that would be good for this. This tv is only 1080p and 60hz, I have an air mouse with USB receiver for control, and power delivery through the dongle is needed. Also, because of extended use it needs to stay cool! Heating up is obviously a fire hazard. I thought this would be a good place to ask since there are probably a lot of people on here who have used dongles for different phone setups. Thanks everyone! tldr; looking for dongle for Galaxy S9, needs hdmi, usb a, power delivery, and safe during prolonged use.

Hi, I have an old Notebook I wanted to repurpose because it was a multimedia notebook, the screen is presumably broken and the keyboard and chassis got a heavy dent in the center. / (specs at the end) The thing is I can't get the remains of the notebook to post or enter the BIOS even with every peripheral detached, basically just the mobo, cpu with heatsink and fan, ram and power switch with status leds. It is powered by it's brick with the battery removed. There is no obvious damage to the board itself. Uppon pressing the power button the fan starts spinning and the leds light up, after a couple seconds everything shuts off and after another couple seconds it fires back up on its own, again in the same way, then again everything shuts down one last time and on the third run the fan ramps up to a hundred percent indefinetely without running notably hot. I get no video output through it's own display (it might be shattered as it crunches when I run my knuckles across, I can't check right now anyway) or through the hdmi port, also switching inputs via FN macro on the keyboard did nothing. There was a distinct humming sounding like speaker interference but it stopped after detaching the speakers. I figured the cpu might be a problem as I have seen this kind of behaviour when for example it's not seated correctly or pins are damaged. I checked the cpu and socket for damages but everything is fine, switching out ram did no good either. The interior of the chassis is covered in metal sheets and there are metal contacts (hourglass shaped metal strip springs) labeled "SPR1", "SPR8" and so on and I have no idea what they are for, maybe they need to short in order to create ground or something, I have never seen something like this. A new CPU would cost less than 10-20€, an even better one less than 40€ but a new motherboard would be more than a 100€ and thats just not worth it, unless there would be an alternative. Specs: Brand: Medion Model: Akoya E7216 (MD 98550) Motherboard: M10H2 (HannStar?) Socket: G1/988 CPU: Intel i3 M380 @ 2.53Ghz Ram Hynix SODIMM, 2x 2GB 1Rx8 PC3

Hi, Im thinking of buying this server: https://www.asus.com/pt/Commercial-Servers-Workstations/RS700X7PS4/specifications/ I found one for sale at 270€ and my intent is to add a graphics card and game on it but not sure if its possible to add a gtx 1650 or a RTX 2060/2070 into a 1U form factor Seller has in description x2 (Socket 2011) Intel Xeon at 2.6GHz and 48GB RAM and 1TB of HDD and a Raid Adaptec card. I asked for more details on the cpus and will edit/add later My questions are if its possible to add a graphics card and some USB 3.1 cards and maybe wifi card. and can you game on it? image.webp

My Dad owns a little computer shop and he's racked up quite a collection of old parts that are mostly ridiculously outdated. Is it worth modding cases and reusing old parts? Mostly to create browsing computers and maybe even low-end gaming computers for indie titles and older games. I'm not an expert modder but I could re-paint some old cases and cut into them to make them look more aesthetic. Not sure sure if worth the effort tho.

I have this old iPod music station. I don't want to deal with loading music on my old iPod Touch and manually changing things. There is an AUX port but I thought this might be a good DIY opportunity. Unfortunately I have no clue what I am doing and no idea what forums to post to in order to get help. If somebody can help me out by guiding me somewhere more specialized of maybe just help out here since there are plenty of creative people. I attached pics of the way it looks and the insides. I took it apart to see how much space there was. And took out the iPhone port, the cable is just a 5pin. Not sure if there is any room for a big battery setup. What I want to do is cut out the spot where to iPhone port was. Replace it with LCD display instead. Have an Arduino connected the 5-pin port to deal with display and music through Bluetooth. I do not know how the 5-pin port works and still need to buy all the parts. I want to make this into a portable Bluetooth speaker setup if possible. Otherwise having it plugged to wall is fine. It would be a huge bonus if I could setup an assistant like Alexa. Any help and guidance is appreciated. Help with parts, a new forum or tips on how to interface the 5-pin port.

So i recently acquired some old Point Of Service computers from a McDonalds after they upgraded. I'm thinking that if I can get a new os installed I can turn them into emulation systems but I'm thinking theres a custom bios on them and I'm not sure if i'd have to flash them,

So I'm planning on building a new rig soon. My current one has well outlasted its use. I'm planning to turn my current rig into a home nas/media server. So big question/seeking guidance. Would it be worth it to undervolt my fx8320(for less heat and less power usage), or use an fx6300 i have laying around as the cpu since it already has a lower TDP? and I know I don't have to do either but, having the 8320 on and drawing power 24/7 in a nas im worried im going to have a big increase in KW used per month

I was recently given 3 old towers 2 were older gaming computers, 1 was way to old and i'll be seeing what i can take out of it (1996 or prior) so i took out the majority of the two gaming towers to try to make one older but decent vista/XP tower to use. now is this a lost cause and should i just use the tower to build a new pc or is it possible to even make something. so the best parts i pulled out were: motherboard is a asus P4P800 e Delux edition 4x ddr1 sdram sticks 512 mb each (2 coarsair professional, 2 ocz, all same speed) geforce 7800 series BFG edition i have 2 audio cards (Can you have multipe audio cards?) lg gsa-h55n dvd writer i have multiple hard drives but the majority are pata drives.(160 gb maxtor diamond, 500 gb western Digital), i aso have some early sata drives available( maxtor diamond plus 9 80 gb and 120 gb, western digital 500 gb) and i was hoping i could use a newer western digital baracuda, but its incompatable. has 5-6 fans in it and a L.I.S. 2 Premium lcd screen (2 of them I may end up using both) any input is welcomed:)

So a couple years ago my father gave me his old speakers and stereo receiver. They weren't great but they were loud and got the job done. Sadly, the stereo died recently but I decided a cool way to re-purpose it would be to build a pc inside it! However I actually don't have very much experience with custom pc's (I've built a couple pc's but nothing special). So, before I start I was wondering if those of you could give some tips to my dad and I before we begin. The stereo is a Sony GX700ES, it is very big and I feel pretty comfortable about being able to fit a mini-itx (or maybe m-atx board), min-gpu, sfx/sfx-L power supply, inside of it. I have a couple of things I'd like to accomplish as well with this build. 1. I want to be able to use the physical knobs (the function and master volume ones) to control volume and have the second be programmable (I could figure out how to do the coding, I just need to figure out how to get the knob's connected to and recognized by the PC) 2. Replace the screen on the front with a recessed hdmi/dvi/DP screen. I have seen mini-hdmi monitors however none for this form factor and to my knowledge I just cant cut up a monitor and shove it in there. 3. If possible, set up some of the buttons on the receiver to also be programmable (I dont know if I could somehow use an arduino or something similar to act as a controller for all the things I want to program and then just have that connect to the PC. 4. Replace the RCA output input on the front with an SD card. My biggest problem is being able to assign functions to those knobs and buttons, if I could figure out how to do that to just one button and knob I'd then get creative with the rest. I am planning on paying/asking someone who repairs stereos to open it up and take out the main board and power supply already inside of it, as I know that can be dangerous and I'd rather have an expert do it for me. I am a 100% noob at this kind of stuff, but my father is a pretty good handyman and we have PLENTY of tools. Any/all help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi. I seem to have a knack for accumulating older hardware, whether I bought it when it was in its prime or a family member is throwing it out. I'm growing a collection (for lack of a better word) of older tech stuff, and I really want to do something with it all. I've got an: iPod Nano 3rd Generation (8GB, Pink) iPod Nano 6th Generation (8GB, Grey) iPod Touch 4th Generation (32GB, Black) Samsung Galaxy S (original, 16GB, Black) Samsung Galaxy S II (16GB, Black) 2010 MacBook with broken display and wireless cables. I have been experimenting with the 3G Nano and it is a great device, but I like the radio on the go, so I might use my Nano 6G For that, but it has been playing up a bit recently. The iPod Touch 4th Generation is running iOS 6.1.6 and I am clueless as to purposes for it. The battery is on the way out so...yeah. The Galaxy S and S II both work fine. The MacBook is very finicky, and I will attempt to diagnose it at a later date. If anybody has any uses for the Nano 3G, the Touch 4G, or either of the Galaxy phones, that would be great! Thanks, Alpha.

Hi. I've gotten a lot of Serial cables but have no use for them and don't want to throw them out. Can I change the plug on the end, for example? Or is there a use for them with older computers? Thanks, Alpha.

So, my trash i3 laptop died not long ago. I've removed the HDD to put it in my machine. Installed it in the machine, turned the machine on, drivers installed and restarted. Checked HWmonitor to check the temp and what have you and this shows up. The MK6465GSX is the 2.5 I installed, the DT01ACA100 has no issues at all. What can I do to clear this? Or atleast check the health of the HDD. I just used windows HDD repair thing, took a good 10 hours and it's still saying "yes" across the board. What can I do to fix this?

Hi! Black - Of interest. Grey - Doesn't matter too much. So I was trying to use this old router as an AP, and in order to do so, I deactivated the DHCP on it. It didn't exactly work, or I'm not completely sure whether it did or not because I was too dumb to try and connect to it with the ip given to it by the main router before I "smashed" the reset button. But then it did! I could connect to my network with it, it would ask for it's default password and then I'm in! Tho I wanted to change the password and the SSID to the same of my other APs, and to my surprise, when I tried connecting to it with the ip given by the main router it gave me this error 404 not found. Not a timeout, didn't even ask for credentials, just the error. It's a thomson tg784n. I have got no instructions or anything like that, tho I did manage to find this online manual, which tells me there's a setup that I should run from a CD I don't have. Also no third party firmware I've searched for is compatible with it. I could simply change the other APs's SSIDs but it wouldn't be as pretty as I want it to be. Me pressing the reset button so brainlessly might have not been too good of an idea as that might be why I can't get to any interface. GAWD I hope you guys can help me, and most likely you will be able to Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

Hello LTT community, I recently completed my first PC that I have dubbed Golaith:). This means that I have an old PC laying around that I want to repurpose and integrate into my home somehow. The specs on this PC are as follows: Dell Studio 540 Case Intel Core2 Duo@2.83Ghz 4x2Gb DDR3 generic ram (probably at 1333Mhz-I didn't check before cannabalizing for new build Nvidia GeForce 9800GT GPU Seagate 750Gb 7200RPM HDD Coolermaster 400w power supply (ancient) Generic LAN card Generic LGA775 Motherboard The specs on my home are as follows: Outside-3 zones of 2 channel audio (integrated into Control4 system) Main Floor: Main living room-65" Samsung TV, local Samsung Blu Ray player & 5.1 surround (integrated into Control4 system) Family Room-5.1 Surround integrated with Control 4 Audio (will likely never be used but convinced the wife that she may change her mind later when we were building the house) Office-Golaith:), WD Mycloud EX4, Networked HP 8610 printer Basement: Home theater prepped with 7.1 surround tied to Control4 system (set up for 105" projection screen), 2 additional 2 channel audio zones integrated into Control4 system), 27u Strong box containing DTV Genie (Main DVR), Xbox 360 Upstairs: Loft-5.1 surround integrated with Control4, Playstation 3 (used only for blu ray capabilities) Master bedroom-2 channel audio integrated with Control4, 55" insignia plasma (old but still great), DTV DVR (non-Genie), XboxOne (I know, I know, it was a birthday present from the wife) My original plan when building this house was to have a unified system that was seamless for my wife to use while having access to some advanced features such as airplay, temperature control, & streaming media (especially movies) without having to put in discs and do slide shows for family get-togethers. But I feel like my entire system is beginning to become fragmented. I am hoping that building either a dedicated HTPC (Code name David) or media server with Kodi will at least solve the problem of having to put in Blu Ray discs. I am not averse to building a new HTPC to be used solely for media duties, but I don't know where to start when it comes to required specs for 1080p viewing (VERY distant plans for 4k upgrades-like 5-10 years distant). My question is what to do with this old Dell Studio. I have a substantial media library to include a ton of CD's, boxes upon boxes DVD's and shelves of Blu Rays. I am not sure how to repurpose this old computer into either a media server or HTPC. I am also not sure of the difference between an HTPC and media server. I am not super concerned with noise as it will likely live in my office. If not there then it will be relegated to my AV cabinet in the basement. The only useable parts that I can see going forward would be the hard drive and case. Questionable items include the video card, processor, RAM, and motherboard. Items to definitely replace are the power supply (ungodly coil whine and age), and LAN card (I don't know what band it is rated for but it probably isn't even N band). What would you all do in this situation?

Sources: http://promobay.org/ http://torrentfreak.com/pirate-bay-backs-disruptive-activists-startups-charity-and-more-131106/ News: If you have been to the torrent sharing website ThePirateBay to get the newest version of Ubuntu or perhaps discover a new indie artist; and in the process discovered a new artist on their frontpage; well this may be a thing of the past. TPB has stopped displaying artists on their front page since quite a while now since shifting that to a new platform, the PromoBay, which will now support artists as well as activists, charities and startups. My take: This is awesome! TPB has a wide reach and this is a great way to get people to know about news which will impact them in a big way.
