I provided a drawing to help better convey my issue. Bit of context, I wanted ethernet connection for PC gaming but did not want to deal with the cable running through the whole house so I opted for a powerline adapter and been great since, the problem is that our ISP upgraded to fiber and with it came a change in modem, this modem got reduced range and the WIFI barely reaches my room giving me problems with my phone, switch and tv. So I was wondering if it's possible to connect a router to the powerline in my room to fix the WIFI issue or just leave my phone behind and buy an ethernet switch for the rest of my devices.

ethernet Looking for Powerline Ethernet (or similar) Recommendations
NCSGeek posted a topic in Networking
Hello. I'm looking into a powerline ethernet adapter because the ethernet in my wall only has 1 of 4 of the cables functional and I need a second ethernet line for a LAN server. (somehow they broke most of them during installation) Does anyone have any good recommendations? I mean, I've done my own research and found two fairly nice ones on amazon that fit my speed requirement (1, 2) but I've read that it's bad to plug these into surge protectors/suppressors so I was hoping to find one that has that kind of safety built-in. (if that's a product that exists) So basically I'm looking for some recommendations on a well-built solution with protections in-built. I'm also open to suggestions for non-powerline solutions if you think there is a better way to do this. As long as it doesnt involve something bulky, or something that splits my one ethernet line into more, then I'd probably consider it. Thanks! -
Hello, my Lan and the wifi over my relatively new powerline adapter is very slow. From the 1gbit/s rate I should be getting, I have about half a mb on my powerline. I might add i dont get the full rate at the router itself either but like 500mb/s at least. My router is downstairs and I am sitting upstairs btw. I´ve had the thought that the old electrical lines in my house might be the issue, but even moving the adapters closer together didn´t really seem to help. I also do not really have an Idea how to fix this software wise, even though I tried to do some research. I would be really glad for some advice Thank you very much.

Hi there! So I recently bought a TP-Link AV1000 (PA7017P) powerline kit and it improved my network setup so I'm happy with it and its placement. Problem is that I pay for 500mbps and the speed I get out of the kit is 310mbps. If I got the better one, the AV2000 (PA9020P), would I see a speed increase? I can easily return the PA7017P so swapping it wouldn't be much of a hassle but it would be nice if someone has experience with both models could give me an answer. Network setup is: M500 broadband (Virgin Media) to PA PA to Linksys router Router to mesh wifi node (Before the powerline kit, I had to use 2 extra nodes to cover my entire house. With the PA, I get better wifi speed due to the router being in a better place)

Hi, Been recommended this site to solve my problem, hope i'm posting in the correct place, please help! I live in a house in London and as soon as I moved it it was clear I could not get good wifi in my bedroom and no option to move the router. I play on xbox a lot and require a good ethernet connection. I went out and bought a BT powerline adapter kit, purely with ethernet connections, and it worked a treat. A month or so later I went out and purchased a Netgear wifi booster for my phone/lapotop and again, no issues. The house has Talktalk internet with speeds of ~30mb. I regularly wish to play online gaming and also stream videos/youtube/twitch from my laptop. Usually with no issues. Until recently I started to notice occasionally when I started to stream twitch i would get knocked offline. Then this week now my xbox simply will not connect online while the laptop is on, when I managed to get both on at the same time the xbox said it was receiving speeds of 0.04Mb/s! However if I go and turn off the Netgear wifi booster at the plug, instantly the xbox goes straight back to 30Mb. Now, if the booster is plugged in and turned on the xbox is simply offline, 100% of the time. Please help me get back to being able to use both my xbox online and also the wifi booster for my laptop!! Thanks in advance, Tom R.

So I have a few routers and I want to turn them into repeaters. Is there anyway I can use it without connecting a cat cable? Or do I need a cat cable? And If I do what powerline adapters do you guys recommend. Some can be expensive some aren't. I'm trying to get a signal to my electronics downstairs.

I have a powerline adapter plugged directly into the wall (not into an extension lead) and when i do a speedtest.net or even try to download anything on steam, i am getting less than half the speeds that i am getting if i used the inbuilt wifi card on my motherboard. The motherboard has gigabit Ethernet so that shouldnt be an issue. I am using a CAT 6 cable for both adapters (one connecting to the router and one connecting to the PC) and the powerline adapter which i am using is the BT Broadband Extender Flex 1000 kit (https://www.amazon.co.uk/BT-Broadband-Extender-Powerline-pass-through/dp/B00P7XV004). I am paying for 200mbps from Virgin Media, with WiFi I am getting 180mbps, with powerline i am getting 60mbps, plugged directly into the router i am getting 211mbps. Is it normal for a powerline adapter to be this slow or am i doing something wrong?

This goes to whoever uses powerline adapters, could you please mention the model name of your kit and also list a comparison in ping latency between at least two of the three (powerline, wifi, ethernet ) obviously powerline being a mandatory participant in the comparison Please avoid the mistake of using a website such as speedtest.com or fast.com etc as this wont show the ping introduced by the powerline kit but rather the ping between your router and the webserver you are testing via those webpages. You can use cmd (open it by pressing the start button and then type CMD and then hit enter from there you just type "ping xxx.xxx.x.x -t" without the quote marks also the Xs are placeholders for number please use your gateway address/the ip you would normally enter to get into your modem/routers controlpanel/menu in many cases it is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 if you dont know google "default getaway for *your modem's model number here* " or look at the sticker behind or under your modem where the wifi pass is printed ) the -r will just make pings until you stop it (the more the better leave it for at least 20 seconds) in order to stop it push CTR+C then a result will be displayed with min max and average just as this one: In my case the getaway ip was 192.168.1.1 if it doesnt work for you then please refere to the tips I mention above on how to find out what's your getaway. you need to follow the same steps for either wifi or ethernet. This would help anybody who will in the future google for a powerline kit that has the lowest latency (suitable for gaming for example) I dont have a powerline kit yet (hence I was researching did not find almost no results ) I thank you in advance guys

My PC is on the second floor of my house so an ethernet cable will not reach from our router so I am using a simple TP-Link powerline adapter to play games. My internet speed is 300mbps download. With my currect TP-Link powerline adapter I am only able to get about 40-55mbps down and nowhere near the 300. I am wondering if getting this Netgear Dual Band WiFi Range Extender will be faster than my current powerline adapter. Can someone explain how there are ethernet ports on the Netgear wifi extender when it's not being plugged into anything? It seems like it only plugs into a wall power outlet and that's it. Does the WiFi extender get the wifi signal and just convert it into ethernet ports? I know that with powerline adapters there is some signal loss due to the wiring in my house. Would I theoretically see faster wired speeds from the Netgear Wifi Extender (plugged into the ethernet ports) or would it be the same speeds that I am currently getting. Thank you !

Recently, I purchased and set up the TP-LINK TL-PA9020P 2 Port powerline adapter and connected it to my PC. It was working great for me until about an hour later when one of my family members couldn't access the wifi on either his phone or laptop, while other devices were still able to connect to it. However, the next morning the wifi was suddenly working again. Then the day after we were all able to connect to the wifi, but it was incredibly slow. Now, the wifi has been constantly inconsistent until I unplug the ethernet connected to the powerline adapter, which seems to fix the issue. The strange thing about this is that the wifi will still be slow even when my PC isn't even turned on. I've had the powerline adapter for about 2 weeks and it at least had been working fine just on my PC that was connected to it, until today when my ping spiked to 300+ during a game. The other devices that were on the wifi also were suddenly extremely slow until I restarted the router which fixed the issue. Then, the same thing occurred about 20 minutes later and it's been driving me nuts. My router/modem is a Cisco dpc3939 xb3. Thank you

Hey guys I recently moved into a new apartment and unfortunately my new place has very sub optimal networking capabilities, meaning that both wall Ethernet ports are on the opposite site of the apartment from my PC. I solved that problem by getting a TP-LINK TL-PA8030 Powerline Adapter and that has been working perfectly for me so far. However I do take surge protection very seriously and I'm worried that my PC or TV could get damaged or killed by a surge through the networking cable coming from the adapter. Is there actually any danger of that happening If so, how can I protect my electronics best? Bonus question: Is 19.500 A enough protection for a PC and 2 monitors? Thanks in advance! Any help is appreciated.

So the last month or so I have been having trouble keeping a steady ping and steady connection my ping has a good 200ms variable at any given moment: http://imgur.com/JnKPjfs My ping used to be 160 +/- 10 in this server. I have also been experiencing random disconnects which also suck. My roommates say they don't have this problem but they also aren't gamers so its not as big a deal. I also should mention that i have been using a powerline adapter "netgear powerline 200 mini adapter" but bringing the PC downstairs and hooking it strait to the router see no improvements (actually seems to make it worse) What could be wrong? my unexperienced theories are: 1) time warner cable is shit and i need to yell at them 2) motherboard is shot possibly due to a cheep powerline and/or old house and/or case that is falling apart. thoughts? theories? solutions? thank you LTT forums specs: CPU: Amd fx-4170 (am3+ socket) GPU: Gtx 760 gigabyte windforce Motherboard: MSI 970A-G46 ATX AM3+ Motherboard Ram: Geil evo veloce ddr3 1866 HDD: 7200rpm sata 1tb PSU: 550 watt 80+ gold rosewell I'm not sure what my bois version is but I don't think I've ever updated it in the 2 years i've had it. EDIT: playing around a bit is showing me it might just be Time Warner, but I'm open to suggestions

So I recently got a few powerline adapters to improve the awful WiFi speeds I was getting (which were worse on my desktop than any other device in the house). My mom and brother said there was immediate improvement on their systems, but when I plugged my cable in (I did have to buy a third party one that was long enough) Windows wouldn't enable the ethernet for me. I'd go into Network Connections and click enable, but after it said enabled it would go back to disabled. I then tried uninstalling the Ethernet driver, but after reinstalling it nothing shows up in Network Connections except my (crappy) WiFi. Any help would be appreciated! I tried a number of solutions involving regedit but none of the files I was to delete or edit were even there. I'd prefer not to spend all weekend installing Fallout 4, haha.

So i recently bought this powerline adapter : http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-PA4010KIT-Powerline-Adapter-Starter/dp/B00AWRUICG/ref=lp_1194444_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1430866947&sr=1-1 And I only seem to be getting around 40mbps on average. Unfortunately my internet speed is 50mbps. I used my phone and used the speed test app by ookla, using the 2.4 Ghz band, standing right next to my router I got 51mbps. And I can easily get the result multiple times. With my powerline adapter I get LOTS of supposed different speeds ranging from 30-40 mbps. Is this simply a limitation of powerline adapters? That they won't always get you full speed?

Hi, I have bought a new set of powerlines, because the ones I am using at the moment are older ones (200Mbps) and I am borowing them from a friend. The problem is that my new ones don't connect to each other when plugged in the exact same way as my old ones, and when I plug the new ones directly into the wall (I know that's how you are supposed to put them in), then they will connect, but very very slowly. (A lot slower than the old ones) I'd like to know why the old ones are working, but the new ones aren't and how to fix this. Thanks in advance, Sam this is the link to my new powerline adapters: http://www.routercenter.be/product/513001/category-112203/zyxel-pla5206-starter-kit.html(I live in belgium)

I have a fantastic idea for something that is like a powerline adapter, but for more than just ethernet. I don't want to say more, but I know very very very little about electrical engineering and would need enough knowledge to create a prototype. Anybody wanna help me out or lead me in a direction?

Okay, built my desktop and got a powerline adapter for it, in the same room, my laptop gets ~38 mb/s down, meanwhile my powerline adapter gets 1mb/s. I have no idea why, they are both plugged directly into the wall, no extensions etc. Help? Solved: Had shittons of things plugged intot eh same socket as the powerline adapter.

Just built my friend a computer and he has one netgear AV 200 nano recieving a "signal" from the home network and it is connected to another powerline adapter in the other room, through the powerline obviously, and outputs a wifi signal and one ethernet port. I am looking online and there is a tplink av200 and a netgear av200, but the netgear is WAY cheaper, so if he gets the tplink av200 will it recieve signal from the netgear av200 the is receiving signal from the network? Very obscure question so sorry for that

Hello, This is my first time posting on the forum so apologies on anything that i have done wrong So I live in a house with old wiring and no easy way to drill through the floor. My router is downstairs while my pc is upstairs in my bedroom, I have steam in-home streaming access that I want to use but my 200mbps rated powerline adapters aren't cutting it So i need a long Ethernet cable to go up the stairs ect. I know i will get a speed improvement but how much? is it worth it? Thanks, coolfireking2
