  1. Hi all, first post here! I read an iFixit article which mentioned that iPhone X-series phones are compatible with both the original flexible OLED panels and aftermarket LCD screens. I don't understand how this is possible given that the two technologies use different waveforms, but anyway, this seems like an excellent opportunity to test out claims that OLED is better or worse for battery life compared to LCD. I keep hearing that OLED + dark themes use very little power. Yet every OLED device I've owned has had poorer battery life compared to LCD. A display panel engineer at Tianma told me that this is because of unoptimized software and not because of hardware. This Vice article mentioned that the knock-off LCD panels for the iPhone run hotter and use more power than OLED. Yet the same article mentioned that there was no performance difference between LCD and OLED. However, Anandtech's analysis of the iPhone XR's battery life put it significantly above its OLED stablemates in screen-on time. Ultimately, it's not clear to me which panel gets better battery life. Could this be an opportunity to put claims about OLED vs LCD battery life on iPhone replacement screens to the test? Can someone just drop in an LCD panel into an iPhone XS and measure screen on time in order to test the battery life of OLED vs LCD panels?
  2. Hello. I need a tablet for watcing mainly 16:9 aspect ratio content on. Requirements: Must have an OLED screen. Can't be crazy expensive (like the iPad Pro 3rd gen) When looking for a tablet I'd initally thought about buying the Galaxy Tab S5e, but then I discovered that it doesn't have a headphone jack. I like everything else about it so if there's something similar to that with a headphone jack that'd be sweet.
  3. Using the 2:1 rule of thumb for sitting distance to screen size for TVs, this seems like it will be a great option for people in smaller living spaces who didn't want to overdo their main TV by getting something too large. Also, since it supports G-Sync and FreeSync it should make a great gaming TV for the living room. I'm just hoping that it doesn't come in too expensive when it eventually gets a price and release date. LG CX 2020 OLED TV Gets 120Hz BFI + 4K@120p Gaming with G-Sync/ VRR
  4. So, i was watching youtube vids like one does, and the video below came to be via autoplay suggestion. TThe video covers how they've been rediscovering the advantages of CRT diplays for modern gaming. Wonder if LTT would do a video to test these out? A lot of what they say makes sense, but it's hard for me a -tropical pleb- to judge from watching a video.
  5. Hello everyone. I have a question about Maximus X formula. When I build a computer with it its OLED screen and adrasable led strips weren’t working. OLED never turns on. Light integrated on board and regular rgb strips work fine. I wonder do I have to need windows installed for OLED to work…couse it never shows up not during the boot and even when I installed live dash it never went up. I set it in bios to work on boot but this changed nothing. I read somewher on this forums that I need to update LED firmware on this board but I cant find and LED software anywhere. I must add I did updated on latest bios to run 9900k. I would really like to make this work couse OLED is one of main features of this board over the rest. On that note I currently am running my system with 9900k on Mximus XI hero wi-fi with EK monoblock installed to watercool both the VRM and cpu….under stress VRM never vent up to 55 degrees….in 10 hours of aida 64. I wonder which board is actually better…my watercooled hero XI or Formula X which would also be completely watercooled. Even if I stay on hero I would like to fix OLED screnn and adrassable rgbs…and if there is a firmwere for LEDs, couls someone who knows more than I post a link for it. Thanks everyone.
  6. Hi all, I am already thinking about this a lot and I would like to upgrade my current TV with something new. I have a PS4 Pro and maybe going to upgrade to a PS5 and a gaming rig. I like to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime and sometimes Sky. I like OLED, static images burn-in (HUD in games) I like QLED, has everything what OLED has, only down is the blacks. (The newer models come close) I don't really care about that.. Needs to have: Good HDR 4K minimal 65" High Refresh Rate Good Response time VESA I don't care about the smart TV option, I use other options for that. What do you guys recommend? Thanks! P.S. I live in Germany
  7. Finally got around to using my old desktop hardware to put together a nice little HTPC for my home theater. Specs of the PC: Intel Core i7 7700k @ stock clocks (have a low profile CPU cooler so don't want to push it like I did when it was in my desktop rig, didn't realise just how big the GD10 was, could have got something beefier) ASUS Strix Z270-E Motherboard ASUS Strix 980 4GB 32GB HyperX Fury 2400Mhz RAM Corsair AX860 PSU All wrapped up in a Silverstone Grandia GD10. And the TV in question is a LG C7 55" OLED. Running certain resolutions causes graphical issues such as little green dots (I guess small groups or even individual pixels). Kind of sprinkling over the screen. Not very dense but noticeable - especially against the solid black background. Also when this is happening, the display will often drop out, then return. And eventually drop out again. I thought perhaps I was using an older HDMI spec cable (was one I had laying around) and used one from my Xbox One X. (Note that I have a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and both work flawlessly. 4k HDR and I have used my current desktop w/ 2080ti before just to see how well I could run 4k and there were no issues). Even with the for sure higher bandwidth cable, the same issues happen. The ONLY resolutions that appear to work correctly without any issues are: 1080p120 2160p30 All other resolutions I have tried, including lower resolutions give the above issue. For example, 1080p60, 1440p60 and 2160p60 have the issue. Even 800x600! Occasionally when switching to one of these resolutions, the display just drops out entirely, only to return when it restores itself to one of the above functional resolutions. Note that ALL of these resolutions function the same whether HDR is on or not. Prefer to have HDR on however, kind of the point of the OLED. Now it doesn't make sense to me why 1080p120 works fine but 1080p60 does not - I mean, I don't want 60Hz over 120Hz but the not working just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any troubleshooting tips for either the PC or the TV?
  8. Read on CNET that Micro/Mini-LED are going to replace OLED because they offer similar advantage without the same burn-in problem, what do you guy think about this? I personally feel rather skeptical about the claim, lightbulb is lightbulb and lightbulb can fail. While that may not led to the same image retention problem like in OLED, that's definitely going to be an issue for long term use. I also actually have a chance to read some of the warranty and maintenance material for some HDR display which use the same technology, they specifically mentioned how to handle this case of individual backlight failure which mean they at least expect that to be a problem at least in the worst case scenario use case.
  9. We've already had 1000:1 IPS LCD monitors for like 15 years, I've had that in 4k for 5 years so there was no way I would get yet another LCD display just with some tweaked software that can tone map HDR signal, I wanted a true upgrade and I couldn't find it in traditional computer monitors, not for a reasonable price, so I turned to the LG C9 OLED TV when it was on sale in December. It is on paper, the perfect display because it has: Perfect black with infinite contrast 750nits peak brightness True 10bit panel Low input lag, 6.5ms in 120hz, 13ms in 60hz <0.01ms response time 4k 120hz 10bits HDR with G-sync wide colour gamut ~98% DCI-P3 Although it isn't quite as ideal as I had thought when I bought it, I'd still say it's the best gaming monitor choice at this point. The most obvious issue is the size, they're going to make 48" versions this year but the 2019 models only have 55", and it does look a little ridiculous on the computer desk. Having a large display close to your face means it occupies a bigger viewing angle in your eyes, which is both good and bad for different reasons. The advantage is immersion, if you have your in-game FOV set at for example 90 degrees, well this TV occupies almost exactly 90 degrees in my eyes so it's very immersive. The problem is however, I can't see the HUD elements without moving my head or eyeballs, and this can handicap your performance in competitive games. In fact it's so large I have trouble seeing subtitles in games and video unless I sit way back. The second issue is burn-in, while it is a real thing, most people just don't really understand how it works. OLED degradation is not linear with brightness, it's brightness raised to some exponent, meaning high brightness burns much much much faster, thus the burn-in horror stories you might have seen online. Quantitative tests have shown that the pixels need a few thousands of hours MORE usage than neighbouring pixels, while under high brightness, before they become visibly dimmer. This means you would have to play the same game at 450 nits+ for thousands of hours, and I don't think I have 1000 hours on any game ever. And if you use it properly, pixels at the standard "paper white" 150nits will last virtually forever. Last issue I have a slight concern about is it has no DisplayPort, it has HDMI 2.1which is very capable but not supported by current GPUs. As a result maximum bandwidth is capped at 3840x2160@60hz 8-bit. Windows can make this show 10-bit HDR apparently though dithering, I have done extensive comparisons and I can't see the difference between true 10-bit and 8-bit with dithering at all when testing at lower resolutions. Still it's a shame I can't view the desktop in full 4k 120hz 10bit. This is also my first VFR display (other than my iPad), while I can appreciate the responsiveness, especially when it's at 1440p@120hz, I don't think this area alone would've been a worthwhile upgrade over my old regular plain 4k60hz monitor. Let's not forget that this is a full smart TV, meaning you can stream stuff to it in 4k HDR which is absolutely stunning. Watching movies on this feels like watching a movie in the movie theatre because it has that combination of perfect black (which not even the movie theatre has) and very high brightness. I have good LCD displays that can do almost 500nits but if you do that the black levels are so shit it just doesn't look any better than low brightness, not the case with OLED. There's also HDR gaming, they don't really tell you what it's like on the Internet and I have no time to talk about it now but basically it makes a bigger difference in some games than others. Gears 5, RE2, and unexpectedly, Planet Zoo are probably the best examples of utilizing HDR output capabilities. Basically, using a TV like this is ideal for casual gaming, but not competitive gaming simply because it's too large. I would say this is the ultimate choice for general entertainment, while it doesn't have the extreme frame rates of high end gaming monitors, the image quality is so far ahead of those LCDs there's no competition when it comes to watching movies in HDR. And it's not like 1440p 120hz at 6.5ms is bad for competitive gaming, I would say unless you ONLY game competitively, this TV beats the high-end gaming monitors.
  10. I just saw a Digital Foundry video about CRT monitors (and OLED) and how they work differently displaying pixels compared to LCD monitors. My current LCD monitor is pretty old (1080p 144hz no adaptive sync) so would it be worth waiting a few more years for OLED monitors to mature or even get my hands on a decent CRT monitor? Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvRyVZWuvQ4

  13. We have known phones for so long having curved edges, like the Galaxy s7 being one of the first, years ago. That is an OLED display, so I assume that this doesn't exclude TVs... right? Or maybe even monitors? I was searching all over YouTube, on the LTT channel (this can be a really great topic for them to do a video on!), and even on the forum with little or no talk about this. I really don't understand why that this cannot be a technology feature. It would make TVs and monitors much more immersive and good looking to view. And if anything, TVs and monitors haven't had any real upgrades in years in terms of how they have looked, ever since flat screen TVs and thinner monitors. Perhaps now more recently, monitors viewing angles are curved, but they always still have bezels. By curving the display's edges, there would be no need for bezels as the screen itself would be the bezel. Also, how far could we curve the edge? For Samsung phones, it only seems to get at like a 45 degree angle. Why can't we curve it all the way to 180 degrees? And for monitors and TVs? I might be totally wrong on my interpretation here. Please let me know about what is going on in the display market, why curved edge displays and TVs aren't a thing yet, and why the current curvature of phone displays' edges only goes to 45 degrees. Also, is it only on OLED displays? Or can other displays be used as well, if not more efficiently?
  14. So I've been working on an issue that I ran into while helping my brother with his HTPC setup. He has a Dolby Atmos surround setup and the LG C9. The problem here is as follows: 1. Hooking the PC up to the receiver, then passing the video through, will give you full audio functionality, but (for the vast majority of the receivers on the market) limit your video options to HDMI 2.0. Refresh rates higher than 60hz also do not always function correctly 2. If you hook the PC up directly to the TV, there are two issues. You are unable to send more than two channels of PCM to pass through via ARC and any bitstreamed audio (Dolby surround, Atmos, etc.) has a very substantial delay to the point of uselessness. The delay actually seems to affect any external device attempting to stream Dolby encoded audio via ARC, but does not occur with content streamed from the TV itself Rtings was able to bypass the stereo audio limitation by editing the EDID of the display, but in my testing that proved to be unstable in normal use, and while a second HDMI cable to each device is valid as a workaround, it should not be necessary. These issues are fixable directly by LG via software updates. The PCM issue is a software limitation (this was pointed out by Rtings in their review), as is the delay on bitsteamed audio. There is currently a petition to hopefully resolve these issues, but I'm hoping to bring more attention to this through this community. This years LG OLEDs are excellent gaming displays, but these limitations severely limit the consumers options, especially with the upcoming Gsync update.
  15. What if the iphone 11 had an OLED display for the same $700 price. Like $200 Samsung a series phones have OLEDs. I do think if it had an OLED it wouldn't be the best valued phone but it would be the most amazing choice if you really need an iphone and it has the extra colors.
  16. In short: My workstation is dying and I'm on the market for a laptop that can effectively replace it... Obviously I'm going towards high end "gaming" laptops because my production work require intensive CP and GPU usage including deep learning and even tho you can do a lot of it on the cloud nowadays I still do it a lot locally.. usually in early testing phases.. So I gravitated towards the razer blade fully specced. Now, has any of you tried the new samsung oled 4k touch panels? The cost to upgrade to an oled panel is not an issue where you're already spending that much, my main concern is expected lifetime. If I'm spending 3.5k$ on a machine I'd want it to last for years.. I tried to find the panel datasheet or an expected lifetime online but I could find none, doesn anyone have an idea of how long would that last? I'd imagine if they started mass producing it they are expecting it to be successfull so they managed to make them last for at least 5 years 8hours a day? something along those lines? also I'm mostly be programming so I will often have bright text on dark backgrounds all the time. What are your thoughts? Should i go oled for that perfect youtube lunch time or should i rather go lcd?
  17. I recently purchased a DELL XPS 15 7590 with the OLED 4K panel (16GB ram, 9750h CPU, GTX 1650) With it's premium branding and price to match I was hoping for excellent results from the OLED panel, but while looking at the dark grey interface of Adobe Premiere Pro while loading a project I noticed an un-eveness to the screen brightness. To test Laptop1, I set the desktop background to a solid color of very dark grey and sure enough the screen was not even. I contacted Dell and they agreed to replace the laptop. I made it clear that this was a very subtle issue and they should probably check the replacement laptop with a human before shipping and I got vague confirmation that this might happen. Laptop2 arrived and frustratingly it also had an issue of uneven brightness (although admittedly no as obvious as the previous model). After nearly an hour on the phone, Dell finally agreed to accept Laptop2 back for a full refund. So... Am I being too fussy? I know screens can vary, and I would have happily accepted this quality years ago or on cheaper machines today, However with the XPS line, I can't help but feel when paying for a premium laptop, and especially when paying a considerable premium for an OLED screen upgrade, that there really should be far fewer compromises when it comes to quality on a laptop with a list price of over $2000. What do you guys think?
  18. OLED on TV's is basically the best thing ever. The colours, the deep black, the insane contrast.... oh yeeeaaahhh. But is it still that good on a laptop? Buy Razer Blade On Amazon: https://geni.us/Id9n On Newegg: https://geni.us/wervt
  19. I'm looking to purchase a new TV for my new Apartment's living room. I originally took advantage of Best Buy's Black Friday in July deal for the Sony XBR-65X950G for $1,499.99. Then I went to the local Furniture Market called Nebraska Furniture market and they had the LG OLED55C9PUA on sale for $1769.99. I'm trying to debate if I should keep the 65" Sony or go with the OLED TV. I normally play GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and a few other open-world titles between my PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. I also stream a lot of my content as well vai Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon prime Video.
  20. I´ve been searching for a video, an article or anything that throws a hint about TVs at real120hz refresh rate. Do you know about videos or articles comparing side by side TV and PC monitors at 120hz (or higher refresh rate)? Many youtubers do talk about gaming on a TV with 120hz but they use no Test using a tool (video and/or software to really demonstrate that those TVs indeed are having that refresh rate. Do yo know of any?
  21. I don't actually need a new phone or tablet. I have the budget to spend but have to decide between a phone upgrade or a new dedicated portable video watching device. They are the Xiaomi Mi 9T (6/128GB) and Galaxy Tab S5e (Wifi-only 6/128GB), costing USD $330 and $480 respectively where I live (Singapore) Why these devices in particular? Because they sport the features that I want in their respective segments. In particular the phone has an oled screen, large battery, and a pop-out front camera. The tablet has slim bezels, beautiful oled screen, and is amazingly thin. Most importantly they both use Snapdragon chipsets which mean I can root and enslave with custom software. I currently use an OP3T as my main phone. As far as operating is concerned it has served me flawlessly and can do so for at least two more years because I manage it well and dont rely on Oneplus or my carrier for 'updates'. However I would like to have to charge it less frequently, be practically bezel-less, and have a passively occluded front camera to take my privacy one step further. Won't be spending on a more expensive phone because I am not a heavy user and will never play mobile games. I dont currently have a tablet for personal use, but it would be nice to have a big, beautiful and lightweight screen for ease of watching videos at home while in bed and the freedom to walk around with it. At home I use an LDAC bluetooth receiver for listening, so the lack of an audio jack doesn't bother me. To wrap things up, I do not want to make a compromise by getting a phablet. I have no plans to use a tablet for productivity and it won't be getting a sim card. I'm a working adult and now just watch videos most of the time when at home, instead of playing games. My PC is already more than capable if I happen to play games, so have no plans to invest more on it for the immediate future. So which of the two do you think I should get?
  22. Hi Guys, I wanted to reach out the linus tech tips community with regards to my post on reddit concerning issues with my recently purchased Blade, any comments and hints on how to solve the issue would be appreciated. Thanks! Hi everybody, As an FYI, I am reposting parts of the issue originally found; (https://www.reddit.com/r/razer/comments/cfihib/razer_blade_15_oled_2080_terrible_3d_mark/). I must preface this by saying that I have an IT background and that I have owned more than 4 blades, a Zephyrus S and Triton (both shortly as I was considering the Blade). I have gotten the Blade OLED last Friday (07/19/2019). So naturally the first thing to do is to test the system out, on Firestrike I got 16245, then after some kind comments from you I reran those test (https://i.imgur.com/MpCwFNQ.png). (of course I am running the latest drivers, system is plugged in, etc…) Here are the finding after spending my Saturday on the topic; - The OLED version, GPU runs at 80w (https://i.imgur.com/ZccLP0O.png) rather than the exact same model (240HZ IPS, 9750H, 2080MQ) according to (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Razer-Blade-15-Advanced-Model-i7-9750H-RTX-2080-Max-Q-240-Hz-Laptop-Review.420692.0.html). This can be fixed by flashing a different VBIOS (do at your own risk as it may brick your system). Nevertheless, this means that a consumer is potentially purchasing a very expensive device that underperforms significantly! - 90W Courtesy of u/Blake_Thundercock(https://www.reddit.com/r/razer/comments/c9i1x6/razer_blade_advanced_oled_80w_2080_maxq/) - Blade Pro, courtesy of u/hackintoshihope http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/razer-blade-pro-17-2080-max-q-vbios.829747/ -Overall after checking and receiving input from other users the 9th gen is far slower especially the OLED. Courtesy of u/mattmattmatto, https://www.3dmark.com/fs/19906178. However, the worst aspect is the performance as seen in the image of this post. There seems to be an issue in the interface between the display / iGPU / Synapse / dGPU. When I run the built in ACO benchmark on the internal display 42FPS however the moment I run it on the external panel 58FPS a 38% increase! In the case of Rise of the Tomb Raider, on the cheaper 9750H 2080mq blade running the 90W vbios, 126FPS, the predator Triton 500 2080MQ 107. Blade Oled 2080 54FPS. Overall it is my opinion that something should be done to remedy the issue for OLED owners, this is unacceptable that there is the 80w vbios and the fact that there is the issue with the interface causing a SIGNIFICANT performance decrease while using the internal panel. The current recommendation is not to buy the OLED version until this has been clarified. My kind request to Blade owners (especially OLED); - Please run Assassins Creed Odyssey and/or Rise of the Tomb Raider both on internal/external monitors with synapse set to high, no UV/OC to ensure consistency as much as possible. - If anybody has a FB or Twitter account (sorry don’t use them) to push this further, rumor has it that CEO Min-Liang Tan responds to direct messages. I will get in touch via LinkedIn as well. Also, I must note that CS has been very supportive, however I was asked whether my computer is plugged in the wall ?. Standard I guess, but we are in touch, if we identify a solution, I will keep this post up to date regardless, this shouldn’t happen in a 3600EUR machine.
  23. A video about oneplus7pro told me it does, witch comfused me a lot.It tries hard to show the difficulty of the 90hz 8bit oled mobilephone. Maybe it's just an 'advertisement'?
  24. I currently am using a 32" LED TV because I not only game but also watch a lot of movies and shows and wanted to have somewhat decent speakers for when I have to keep things quieter than my stereo can manage. However, it is well past time to retire this as my main monitor and switch to something with better color accuracy and a faster refresh rate. I've been tossed between QLED and OLED. I know OLED has better color and higher contrast while QLED tends to have some bleeding, particularly when brightness is turned all the way up although I think burn in might be a bigger problem for me because I have a tendency to let certain games run while I walk off to do other things and when I'm working on personal projects, there are a lot of static elements in the programs I use. Is burn in avoidable even if you have a static image for 3-4 hours? If you have any specific display suggestions, I'm looking for a 32"-36" display with decent forward or down facing speakers, preferable with some downward tilt in the stand. (Can't do VESA mount).
