There's been a few posts lately where people have been having issues accessing a Folding Rig from another Computer using the Advanced Control client. Couple of important points. Even on your local machine Folding is divided between two parts. The Server which manages folding the Work Units (WUs) downloaded from the Work Servers and the Client that allows you to Configure, Monitor and Control the Server. Just to be confusing the server is called FAHClient and the Client can be either the Advanced Control Python Application or the Web Server built in to FAHClient. These two control processes on FAHClient have their access restricted by default to just the computer they are running on (the "localhost" or 127.0.0.1 (loopback IP Address)). The WebControl runs on TCP Port 7396 and can be accessed by any browser on the computer the Server is running on by the URL: http://127.0.0.1:7396 where 127.0.0.1 is the IP Address referring to the localhost or the IP address of the computer can be used: http://<ip address>:7396 The Advanced Control uses TCP port 36330 ( and can be also accessed using using any TELNET client that supports UNIX terminal emulation such as PuTTY, which the Windows Telnet Client, unfortunately does not ) In order to permit access to either the Web Control or using the Advanced client on another PC you have to allow access on the remote system. Assuming you are on a Local Area Network (LAN) and protected by a router with a firewall blocking external connections the easiest way of doing this is to use the Advanced Control application on the system you want to manage remotely to add the IP Network Address and Mask that will allow all the hosts on your LAN Access without a password. Using a command prompt and running the command: ipconfig you can display your IPv4 address and then click on the "Configuration" button in Advanced Control enter at the bottom of the "Remote Access" tab your network address and mask in BOTH the "IP Address Restriction" and "Passwordless IP Address Restriction" Dialogs. You LAN's IP Network will typically be 192.168.1.0/24 as this is the default for most home routers. Note that you MUST leave in the localhost address 127.0.01 and use spaces to separate the values. Once you have entered the new values and saved them you have to close the Advanced Control Application and Stop and Restart the FAHClient server. If you are in the middle of folding a WU first pause the Work Unit before closing the Advanced Control. To stop the server right-click on the "Folding" applet in the Taskbar and select quit. To restart the server click on the "Folding@home" desktop shortcut which will also launch the Web Control. Un Pause the Work Unit to Resume Folding and then try to access the Sever from another computer using either a web browser or the Advanced Control if it installed. I have a regular computer, 4GB RAM, Core 2 Duo processor, 2 cores, 2 threads, GT 1030 graphics card I have over 10 hard drives ranging from 40GB-320GB, I could, for example, connect them via RAID so they work together or simply take a 320GB drive and delete the recordings every week - I know how to do it all. What kind of surveillance camera can be connected to a computer via USB? It's best if it was on Aliexpress because you can order it all over the world. What software so that I can check how normal monitoring is done on my phone, no matter where I am.

Ive been looking for a while for a windows or Mac based software that can run scans on Android based phones like 3uTools does for iPhone. I know that there are a few apps that could do it but I'm looking for an application for Windows or Mac that can scan the phones instead. Is it because the difference in the phones internals that make it so much easier to find stuff to monitor the battery health/cycle count? If there is phone apps that can run a battery health check then shouldn't there be software for Windows or Mac to test the same way? Does anyone know of something like 3uTools but for android? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Heya guys! Feeling a bit lost here. While gaming with friends (Rainbow 6 Siege if that matters), I touched my computer case and noticed it's fairly hot. After using Open Hardware Monitor, I'd found that my CPU temps PEAK at 100c (no bueno). to isolate - i ran p95 (for 24hours, blend, on all cores) - and it seems that the CPU peaks at around 70c there, so it seems like it can cool itself well enough. Granted - after monitoring and plotting the temps during gaming - i see that the temps sit around 90-ish degrees C most of the time Graphs are provided Below. Blue graph is while running p95, other one is while gaming - i selected only 1 core to simplify it but i made sure this was the hottest one. What could be the cause of this? Could this be residual heat from my GPU? it peaks at 80C Maybe should I get more outtake fans maybe to improve the airflow through the unit? right now I have 1 outtake, 3 intake cpu is cooled with AIO Specs: i7-9700k 3070Ti 32GB Ram Asus TUF Z390-PLUS GAMING

Hey, i accidentally activated a feature in Afterburner that shows multiple "graph lines" in one "graph window" i have no idea how to describe it better. Check the screensnip to see what i mean. I would like to add more graphs like that, for example this one is gpus Core Clock and cpus Core Clock, i'd like to add vram memory usage and cpu ram memory usage; etc Was this a key combination, or am i just lucky and thats not supposed to happen?

Hi Basically I have just rebuilt my PC replacing everything but my GPU PSU and storage and the PC seems to run fine. However, my headset (HyperX Cloud Alphas) no longer seem to have the microphone slider within the speakers level properties to enable microphone monitoring, this is odd as on my previous build this worked perfectly fine. I have tried the usually stuff like uninstalling drivers etc but none of that has helped. I have also struggled to find any info online about this issue a part from a very unhelpful microsoft community thread. So I'd thought id give the LTT forums a try :). Since this has occured after upgrading my PC it feels like hardware could be the issue so I have included my specs below. I was also wondering if I cannot find a solution to this problem if there is any 3rd party no delay microphone monitoring software out there? Thanks in advance! i work for a company as a monitoring technicien, and we use mainly zabbix, centreon. is there a way to have 1 interface connected to zabbix and centreon that can get information from both in 1 place. i used to work with splunk but its kinda expensive and i wanna know if there is an alternative?

Hey all, I have a strange situation: A friend has a Yeti USB mic and a wireless headset which connects to his PC via a Type-C dongle. He wants to monitor the mic with no latency in the headphones while staying wireless (basically to DIY the "transparent mode" on ANC headphones to hear himself and his surroundings), but this requires him to plug into the headphone jack on the mic, cause I assume achieving this through software is not really possible. The male 3.5mm to female USB-C adapter that he would need does not appear to exist, or at least I can't find it. Is that because this would require some additional logic? Also, is this possible at all or will bluetooth latency be too noticeable? What's his best solution? Thanks!

I haven't done anything that would require benchmarking in ages. Last change made to my old log file was 2014 after I changed some case fans and wanted to check if they did something to temps. This July I changed graphics card which is something I would say anyone should run their own sequence after. So after any bigger change (CPU/GPU mainly) anyone should run same benchmarks they have run before change. I will come back to this in a moment. In my situation need was really big. I went from 2011 midrange card to 2013 top end card. Something that in paper is bit better than 280X, card that I was eyeing for upgrade year ago. Yes, talking about used cards. Upgrade was from GTX 560Ti factory OC'd to reference GTX 780. Benchmarks would look awesome. In numbers if not actually, but thats more about nature of tests themselves. So why this post? Well, so I can refer to it when someone asks advice about benchmarking. Since my last run was 3 years ago and I haven't really played any new games, all my game benchmarks are pretty bad choices. Like NFS Shift and Battlefield Bad Company 2. There might be Battlefield 3, but thats it. This new batch won't have any real gameplay. Because of two reasons. 1. I still lack good games for realistic benchmarking, Battlefield 4 is probably on the heavier side. So nah on games. And 2. I don't want to buy games just because I could get good benchmark out of them. Even games with benchmark tools would be just for it since I don't play 3rd person single player adventure/action games (Metro 2033, Tomb Raider, Witcher 3). This will be list of benchmarks which are free and provide good base for anyone looking to create their own sequence. 1. What is my "sequence"? I use term "sequence" to describe procedure where I run multiple tests, check temps and mark down scores. Marking down scores and temps is good practice in general. Not just for bragging, but to check how much you spending money actually improves the systems performance. So my sequence involves having few monitoring software open, taking numbers in notepad and running several benchmarks one by one. Yes, it will take some time, some 1.5h for me. But you need to do it once and then you can just refer notes later if someone asks something. I've used temp readings many times to advice on high temps under stress tests and idles on my older hardware. To actual point. I have 10 software, 12 tests, 1 main monitoring software with 2 others running, notepad with template for scores and temps and FRAPS for one odd out fps reading. I cover tests later. I happen to have 2 monitors, but all this can be done on one monitor. 2nd is good for having all monitoring software there. Like in this manor: So MSI Afterburner is present because of habit of looking at graphs. I actually don't use it for GPU temp monitoring anymore, but habit of looking at fan and temp graphs remains. Main screen is where I look at GPU temp when test is running. Mainly since its new piece and I want to see how my fan settings are holding. Main software here is RealTemp with GPU temp monitoring open. I reset Maximum readings after every test to get reliable readings for all tests individually. Under them all is my normal main monitoring software, OpenHardwareMonitor. Notepad is on main monitor since I don't need it until after test finishes. Things I do and would recommend. I have habit of doing this after cold boot. I would recommend booting before running sequence. Its easiest way, since there's least amount of extra software running on background. For this sequence I added way of closing all extra stuff I have open. Skype, several driver software's, basically anything except multimonitor manager, fan controls and virus scanner. Some might close virus scanner too, but I don't mind it. Then another boot after all testing is done. To get everything working as normal. I would recommend setting any fan profiles like you are going to use them before running test on new components. Makes more realistic comparison. As for temps, I have idle's. Which I will take after first test has run. Reason being that idle's coming directly from boot will be lower than what you are going to see any other time. For testing temps I use max temp. Its most relevant. Since RealTemp shows temps for all cores, I use average with easy count. Take highest and lowest and split difference with upward rounding. Like 66C and 58C would be 62C (8/2=4, 58+4=62C) or 67C and 60C would be 64C (7/2=3.5, round up 4). 2. Tests and score keeping Let's start with synthetic benchmarks. I will give some background on why I use software listed here, where to get it and what settings to use (if needed). 3DMark https://www.futuremark.com/downloads/3dmark.zip If you have had gaming PC for some time, you know this software already. Futuremark's (Yay! for Finnish company) 3DMark has been industry standard for almost 20 years. Its combined benchmark, meaning that it tests both GPU and CPU within single run. First 3DMark I've used is 3DMark03. I've had 05, 06. Vantage and 11. 3DMark06 was used for long time because of its DX9 support. Until Vantage with DX10.1 it was only thing to test new hardware reliably. Thats important. Because of the way benchmarks work, if you change something the score will also differ. So comparing two results between different versions of software can cause issues. I first noticed this fact with FurMark. But back to 3DMark. Free version has 3-4 tests. Most common is FireStrike which is for current gen gaming PCs. You can run it with lower end hardware if you are like me and want before upgrade scores to compare. I also used tad lighter SkyDiver. Mainly because I couldn't get 06 running anymore. So let both tests run, mark score to notepad, mark max temps for GPU and CPU, remember to let temps go back to "idle" in between and reset max readings before running the test. Thats it. Free version doesn't have any settings to toggle. Only thing I would like to toggle is Demo. CINEBENCH R15 Yes, they actually have product name in caps. Maxon makes professional 3D modeling and animation software as their main source of income. But Cinebench has become one reason for their homepage to get constant traffic. It has 2 tests, individually for CPU and GPU. GPU uses OpenCL, CPU renders image using all available threads. Cinebench gives some comparison for similar systems, but I wouldn't look that graph too much. I also don't think it as very taxing software. Run tests for both CPU and GPU, with temp normalization in between. This is among those software with this batch that has single part focus on testing. I don't have just for CPU, but I might look into that part more. Intel Extreme Tuning Utility has CPU testing, but I don't know if it works with AMD. Anyway, having whole benchmark just for single component has some advantages. Like if you'd like to test air cooling myth about radiating GPU heat. So running GPU only test would raise only GPUs temp notably and do something to CPUs temp also. I don't look at utilization when I run these tests, but it could be one thing to check also if you want to gather more data. Catzilla http://www.catzilla.com/download ALLBenchmark's test is different from the two above because it has very noticeable sound effects and music. Otherwise its just another combined benchmark. I've used it since I heard about it from OC3D's TinyTomLogan. TTL is someone who's opinion on OC and CPU performance means a lot to me. I've picked other go-to software from him with OCCT, a stress test software for CPU. But back to Catzilla. Basic version only has 540p benchmark, but you get 720p one by creating account to their site. Easy thing with Google, Twitter or Facebook linking. Rest of the stuff is like before. RealBench https://rog.asus.com/rog-pro/realbench-v2-leaderboard/ ASUS' RealBench is combined test which uses real life tasks for benchmarking. Image manipulation, rendering, video encoding and multitasking. Besides giving total score, you get score per test. I mark all of them down. I got to see how much GPU did bottleneck CPU on CPU heavy tasks. Result? Not that much. But some. UserBenchmark This is new to my lineup. I haven't looked much into what it actually measures. But looks to be lighter side combined test. I would say it replaces Novabench I had on earlier lineup. Results are given in three categories, for Gaming, Desktop and Workstation in percentage. I marked those percentages as results. Heaven and Valley These two from Unigine are pure GPU tests. Heaven is what is commonly used for GPU OC testing, temp testing and benchmarking by reviewers. Valley is bit heavier, so I'd say running them both is good practice. Like with 3DMark, there are more tests you can use. I used highest presets for both, Extreme for Heaven and ExtremeHD for Valley. FFXIV: Stormblood Like said earlier, I don't have real gameplay benchmarks in this set. So this game from 2013 is lower end gaming benchmark for me. It has preset for Mazximum settings, but I pumped those bit more. You can check my settings from PDF attached. I use score as scoring, but you could have also given FPS. (FFXIV_Stormbloo_benchmark_LoGiCalDrm_config.pdf) Star Swarm http://store.steampowered.com/app/267130/Star_Swarm_Stress_Test/ This game engine benchmark is free on Steam. Released 2014 by Oxide Games, guys behind Ashes of Singularity, its has capability of simulating space battle game. There are few options to simulate different style of games. I used Attract with Extreme settings. Score will be given as average FPS. You can select some other combination, important part being that same settings are used before and after any upgrade made to keep score consistent. demo2 https://files.scene.org/view/parties/2015/assembly15/demo/demo2_by_ekspert.zip This one is something I cooked up. Its newer than both other gaming style benchmarks, its done with Unreal Engine 4 and I have no clue if it has any relation to real world or not. Its Demo made by group called Ekspert for Assembly LAN Demo Compo 2015, in which it placed 2nd. There are few remarks I want to make about demo's and demoscene before going actual benchmarking part. Demoscene is all about digital art. Animation, coding, graphics, music, indie game development. At least in Europe, many software and game dev companies have their roots deep into demoscene. If you are doing the things I mentioned above and want to show off your skills by competing, maybe look if there are parties/compo's held in your area. The two known Finnish companies with demoscene background are Futuremark (surprise, surprise) and Rovio. One for making first PC demo at the time when Amiga and Commodore 64 were main platforms, other for making mobile game back when those were played on Nokia N-Cage's. Now back to benchmarking part. Demo2 doesn't have built-in scoring system. So I've used FRAPS to calculate average FPS. Running 1080p version gives warning about using Fraps for recording purposes, but loads just fine after that. I start benchmark counter as soon as demo starts and check scores afterwards. Nothing more to it. Others? As I said along the lines, I would like to have more modern game benchmarks, as well as CPU only benchmark. So I will be looking around for those and adding them here. If someone reading this has ideas about free or cheap games with included benchmarks, please let me know. 3. Scores and comparison At this point you should have raw data text file. Something like this one I'm using: benchmsrk.txt Which includes system specs for each test cycle. This would be the file you are updating during tests. Feel free to use it as template or comparison. But what now? Well, you can just compare by eye results, use it to quickly refer temps and so on. But what if you want know how much better system performance is after upgrade. Thats where Excel (or Sheets, Calc and so on) comes in. Copying results to Excel (&co) can be annoying, but do it once to get template correct and maybe adjust .txt file to help in future. Here's my .xlsx for reference. Also free to be used as template or comparison: benchmark_LoGiCalDrm.xlsx In file I've got some extended system info and notes about tests. Which are pretty much same as in here. But main thing is +- column (Excel hint: add < ' > in front of symbol to exclude any automatic formula). It calculates how many percentage better new score is compared to last. Works best when score changes less than 100% or new score is over twice the value of old. Formula used is pretty simple: =(<new>/<old>)-1 Shown in percentage. You can add color coding and such if needed. If new value are over twice bigger, remove <-1> to get accurate score. There's some oddness in that file in CPU temps. I had issue with Speedfan missing fan profiles for 2 front intakes. Which I fixed after I had changed to new GPU. So those are something to ignore. 4. Conclusion I hope this helps those who are new to benchmarking. Note that this is just how I do things and you should be taking it as guide or advice. Make it your own. I will be doing some fixes along the lines, but as I will not be getting major upgrade in few years, its quite possible I'll be making another batch of tests when next upgrade is on me.

So you have remote systems Folding for you out on the Internet and want to monitor them remotely? Exposing the Web Control (TCP 7396) or Advanced Control (TCP 36330) ports can be problematic as neither protocol is encrypted and is thus susceptible to interception of your data. A better solution is to use SSH Port-Forwarding or Tunneling. The following example is for monitoring from a Windows System at home to a remote Linux system using the PuTTY SSH Client on the Windows system to create a encrypted SSH Tunnel between the Local Windows System and Remote Linux System and was inspired by this post here. On the Windows system create a PuTTY Saved Session for the Remote Host: Don't forget to click "Add" Here we are forwarding the Web Control Port on the Linux System (7396) to the same port on the Windows System so we can run Web Control or the LAR Systems Client. Run this PuTTY session. Open https://client.foldingathome.org or https://127.0.0.1:7396 See the Results from the Linux System: NOTE: You can only do this for a single system as the LAR Systems Client used the https://client.foldingathome.org URL that re-directs to localhost:7396 (127.0.0.1:7396). You could redirect other systems to other ports on the Windows system but only the one using Port 7396 will be visible to the LAR Systems Client. Re-directed systems using alternate ports can only be accessed through a browser. For example, here is another remote system we are re-redirecting to Local Port 7392 on the Windows System: But here the LAR Systems Client won't work as you can not change the Port for it but you can still access this system using the "native" address of the Windows system 127.0.0.1:7392: The same method can be used fo tunnel the Advanced Control port (TCP 36330) from a remote Linux Systems to local ports for use with the Advanced Control or HfM.net. Hi Dumb question from someone who just likes to see how the hardware is holding up. Is it possible for me to remotely control another machine from the F@H client? Both machines are set up to use the same passkey and username, but it seems like I should be able to control both GPUs and both CPUs from the same client on the same home network. Is this possible, or am I stuck remoting into the other machine to do the monitoring? P.S. I have no clue where to start on the remoting into the other machine either, if you've got suggestions for where to start that. I would also appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Skaullywag

I'm seeking recommendations to get a cheap but effective combined flow+temp LCD monitoring tech, for my custom loop, which I've described here. The loop is copper/brass, with a heatkiller IV and Hardware Labs SR-2 480 and D5, to disperse heat from an 18 core CPU being run overclocked. The radiator is good enough that I sjhould be able to run a static water flow, and at most PWM rad fans based on water temp, but even that might not be needed. Once the loop is set up, I'll look at the LCD daily, and then ignore it. I've seen a variety of separate and combined (in-line) monitoring devices, and honestly I'm confused. I know what I'm after and it's pretty simple. But I'm not sure whether it's going to cost £50 or £200, and whether a cheaper model will do or I need something more. Functionality - I'd like a simple standalone LCD that continually displays 3 simultaneous figures: ambient temp, water temp, and flow rate. I don't care if it's 3.5" case fitting or standalone. I also don't care if it's a controller + LCD + sensors, AIO sensor/LCD, or whatever else. That's all I need. (Optional: "nice to have" would be (1) an alarm on water temp/flow rate, (2) water temp -> fan speed PWM output) No need for USB/data connection once set up - I want it not to require software or a USB/data connection on the PC. I don't mind software as a "once off" to configure it, but once set up it should need a PSU connection and nothing else. Sensors - If it doesn't have inbuilt flow or water temp sensors, I'll need suggestions for separate sensors as well. That might make it cheaper as separates or AIO. Quality - Good build quality reputation/reliable, and compatible with brass. Cost - Obviously as cheap as possible "all-in"! It's hard to figure out what to get. Something Aquacomputer? Something Barrow or Bitpower? No idea! Ideas please that will get me what I want without spending more than I need to!

Hi All Kind of a discussion and interested in people's approaches, I've just created a new custom loop (build log with more info if you're interested) after not properly modding any computers for a while and having to use a laptop for an extended period. On my old computers I'd used AIO software if using an AIO which often gave the information, HWinfo64 or with my laptop it had software for OC, fans etc built in for CPU and GPU. How do you like to monitor your system/what are your methods without too much bloat?

i wana use EVGA precision x oc for my overclocking but i like monitoring with msi afterburner because it gives a lot more options than precision x like CPU monitoring, i dont know if this is a good idea because i dont know if msi afterburner will show accurate clock speeds because it was overclocked in a different program.

Hello guys, I would like to know if a program that monitors network traffic from a pc and alerts another one (both are connected to the same router and in the same house) when a specific site is being viewed exists. Before anyone starts yelling "privacy" at me, it's because my stubborn little brother never does him homework (for which he needs his PC) and goes on YT and we've been getting reports of him doing his hmw in class or not at all lately. If such a program doesn't exist, is there anyone who could make one for me? I know it may be a lot to ask if you have to write it all for me but I'd really really appreciate of anyone can link me to such a program or made one for me. I'm bad at even making .bat files so I don't think I can make it myself nor have the time to learn programming right now. Please if anyone can do this for me, I would be infinitely thankful. Also, we are both running windows 10 and if the program sends me timestamps of when YT is being viewed it's gonna be good, or just make a notification pop-up on my pc without alerting him works too. Recently I decided to set up a Plex media server on Ubuntu 16.04. Doing this was an easy process, after I had set up the server I wanted to have a way to get notified as soon as Plex was down, I could have done this the easy by using something like Spiceworks Network Monitor to notify me as soon as the Plexmediaserver service would stop running. This requires an extra server running the Spiceworks network monitor, and this is not what I want. After doing some research I found that using the Pushbullet API you can use any linux server to push out messages towards your phone or chrome. For me this is the optimal solution since I can set this up on my Ubuntu Server running Plex and this uses very little resources (Close to none). I wrote my scripts in such way that they automatically restart the service and notify you of the restart. I added an example of what a message like this would look like: I am thinking about making a tutorial how to do this and sharing it with everyone who wants to set up something like this. Are you guys interested in such a tutorial? P.S: I am not a master in scripting or linux, this took me a while to figure out.

hi with the blue yeti microphone, can i hear my own voice through my headset without any delays? my headset blocks out noise so i end up talking very loudly, so i would like to be able to hear my own voice without any delays like how the native windows "listen to this device" option has noticeable latency. thanks!

Can someone help me find screen that would have good viewing angles, be cheap, support 24/7 work time and preferably be usb powered. Size does not really matter but i would prefer bigger than 10" and smaller than 32".

Hello there, I'm under Linux and I know lm-sensors is no longer in development. Do you know any hardware monitoring tool that are still actively developed that will eventually support Ryzen? I highly doubt that lm-sensors will get support for this.

So this may come across a little bit amateuristic... But how reliable are the CPU temp measuring tools that fly around the internet? (Things like Speedfan, HWMonitor etc) 'cause as someone who's kind of OCD about keeping my hardware as cool as possible even at the cost of noise, this kind of bothers me. I'd love to know if I'm causing any damage to my chip, but I dont know which of the monitors to trust. I'm running an Athlon II 860k OC'd to 4.3ghz at stock voltages. And I've slapped a second 120mm fan to it for a push/pull config The cooler in question I just dont know which one to trust. HWMonitor shows the package temperature peaking as high as as 91 degrees under load. However Aida64's stress test shows the CPU (Indivitual core temps excluded) not reaching any higher than 50-60 degrees. Showing something The only things that change when the CPU is taxed is Temp 3 which is around 50-60 degrees under load (Same as Aida64) and "Core" which hands around 40 degrees (Again, same as Aida64) Which one of these is the one I should pay more attention to? Aida64 or HWMonitor? And if it's the latter... Should I be concerned that the CPU can hit as high as 91 degrees underload?

Hello people of LLT forums! I'm looking for help from the audio enthusiasts and professionals that may be out there in the world! I have run into an issue regarding my audio set up. I will first give a list of the materials used, say how they have been connected, then give a brief description of the issue. Set Up: -Asus Maximus IX Hero mother board -Sennheiser HD7 DJ headphones -Behringer Xeynx 302USB Mixboard/Preamp -Antlion Mod Mic 5.0 -A few 3.5mm to Stereo RCA splitter cables Connections: The goal of my audio set up was to receive audio to the headphones while being able to monitor the microphone in real time. The groundwork for this project what laid out in another LTT forum post which I have been able to find again. In my set up, A 3.5mm to RCA cable runs out of the audio output on the motherboard (which uses on board DAC, enthusiasts please don't eat me Dx). The RCA runs into the Line In 1 of the mixer. A second RCA to 3.5mm cable runs from the main mix output of the mixer to the mic input on the motherboard. The Mic and Headphones then connect in their respective 3.5mm inputs/outputs on the top right of the mixer. The button to the right of the red one is pressed so audio from line 1 does not pass back to the mic input on the motherboard and Mic input from the Mod Mic is input instead. The mixers power is connect to the wall via the included USB to Wall adapter and cable. This allows for mic monitoring with zero latency as well as a full control over the audio experience. Quite fantastic, thank you to the forum poster out there who helped me achieve this. The Problem: To an enthusiast, EVERYTHING WILL ALWAYS HAVE A PROBLEM. Nothing will ever work exactly as we want it. But that's what makes an enthusiast an enthusiast. Its the pursuit of perfection and ironing every last detail out no matter how small to achieve the best possible experience. My problem lies somewhere on this extreme scale of 1st world problems. Unfortunately, the Mod Mic is so quiet that I have to boost mic input, gain, or headphone levels in order to monitor it as I want to (which is quite loud considering the goal of it is to keep my voice volume down during the night). As a result I have Mic input set to 80%, Gain set to 80%, and headphone output set to 30% on the mixer because I find these settings give minimal status and distortion. Unfortunately I mean minimal with a grain of salt... At this volume there is a background hum (which is separate from the background static) that persists through the Mic Monitoring set up. This hum has a few odd characteristics... which I will list because lists are great... The Problem's... Quirks: -The hum is completely eliminated when touching a connection with bare skin on the mixer, mic, or headphones (but not the motherboard or computer) This includes occupied inputs, Occupied output, unoccupied inputs/outputs, the mic wire extension housing (exposed metal at connection), and even the USB power. -The same does not work when touching these parts with a piece of metal that is not touching human flesh... -If the Mic cable is near the keyboard, it will make a high pitched humming sound (this will not happen with any other cable) *I'm told LED controllers are notorious for making these kind of noises* -The same noise will occur if hands are hovering over the keyboard... which continues but to a much much lesser degree if the mic is moved away from the user. -Touching the exposed metal like before eliminates the humming from the keyboard and the background hum. -Bringing the mic cable close to a power cable or wall outlet increases the hum. Touching the connectors still reduces the hum but not 100% (maybe 5% of it is still audible) *not a problem just adding info* -While not a solution connecting the headphones and microphone to the motherboard and using "Listen to device" in Windows has no background hum (This was more of a proof of concept to show that the blame does not fall soley on the mic. -With no mic plugged into the mixer, there is none of the same hum in the headphones even when cranked to 100% (Proof of concept for the mixer... problem in the cable? Then why would touching the mixer's connection eliminate it??) -When using the Mod Mic's inline mute piece set to mute, the hum is completely eliminated Solution?: I'm very dumbfounded on this one guys and girls... I currently have the computer plugged into a wall outlet and the mixer plugged into a powerbar that draws from the outlet directly below it. I have tried moving the mixers power adapter to a completely different outlet in the room with no change to the hum. I am beginning to think it is some sort of grounding problem. I had researched and found something called a "ground loop" that occurs when two grounds have separate voltages in a house hold. I decided to give it a shot and bought a 3.5mm to 3.5mm ground loop isolator from amazon. I plugged it into the mic end but the humming persisted even louder and the microphone did not work. I have that now taken out of the set up. I did however try it on the headphone output and the motherboard output with no help there either. I'm a bit dumbfounded. My next idea is to buy a ground loop isolator for the USB connection but that is a bit more expensive and I'd rather not throw money away. Conclusion: So there you go members of the LTT forum. In situations where everything seems hopeless, no one makes it work better than people who have seen Linus perform... I call out with a plea to those in the community, help me achieve my enthusiast perfection! I will be watching this thread to answer and additional information or replies as quickly as possible. So I live in what could be called a College dorm, we have access to the schools WiFi which is shared with all students. What I'm wondering is how much and what the network admin can see of my activities when I'm using an encrypted VPN service? Are there any steps I can take to make my activities as private as possible? Me and other people in the dorms are pushing to get LAN outlets in our rooms to make it possible to run our own routers with VPN Clients but until then we're stuck with the (sort of) public WiFi.
