  1. I just bought a new Motherboard, CPU and RAM and my windows install partition is MBR because I upgraded from windows 7 a while back. I was wondering if there would be any benefit to doing a clean install of Windows on my system so that it would be on a GPT partition, or is there any down side to keeping it on an MBR partition? Thanks in advance :D
  2. Hi Guys, So I've recently gotten round to building up my new tower and couldn't be happier - Win10 on a WD Black NVMe Drive, i7-9700k @ 4.9GHz, GTX 1060 6Gb etc etc. My problem comes in that I want to have a dual boot option from my old tower so I can access a load of stuff I have on there when I want to. I figured this would be easy. It should be in theory. However, my old rig started life as a HP Enterprise system. It ran what I believe to be a cache raid system whereby it has a tiny 20Gb Intel SSD, as well as the 500Gb spinning disc. The way it was explained to me at the time was that read and write went to the SSD first and then was written to the HDD. This brings me onto the issue. When I plug in my HDD to my new rig and mash F2 to get into the BIOS, the HDD is not there as a boot option! Exiting from that and heading into my Win10 boot, it allows me to see the Win7 drive. I can see the OS files. I can see the public documents (although not the documents of specific users). When I enter the disc management tool in Win10, I can see the partitions of the HDD, including one which shows as OS, however underneath it, it only says "Primary Partition". The "boot, pagefile and crash dump" monikers are missing. When I plug in the old 20Gb SSD, there's nothing on it. It just shows as "Unallocated". It seems to me that my MBR has gone missing somewhere along the line here and since I have no experience of undoing the witchcraft that seems to be cache raid, I'm reaching out for help. Can anyone explain how I can make my old HDD bootable again? Couple more points to note: I've not got an image or backup of the Win7 disc so simply doing a fresh install is not an option. Also, the tipping point for me building a new rig was the power supply failing on the old tower. Since it's HP Enterprise and therefore proprietary (rip off merchants!!!), I cannot even plug the old drives in back the way they were and do anything from the old system. Anyone any ideas? All help appreciated. All the best, Rob
  3. Ok this seems nuts but I have my reasons. I would like to quad boot from my laptop so I can run win server 16, win 10, win 7 32bit and ubuntu. So far I got my server installation done minus a couple Bluetooth drivers and created a win 10 vhdx that shows up as a boot option and works. Issue is win 7 32 bit on a uefi setup. That vhdx won't boot. Enable legacy option ROMs makes it show on the boot menu though. Win 7 32 bit is on a mbr vhdx everything else is gpt. So I'm posting here because I think grub 2 can help. From what I've read I can maybe boot win 7 and ubuntu from grub and chainload over to server and 10. This is a really unfamiliar territory for me so I'm looking for advice. I also don't know how to create a bootable Ubuntu vhdx from my server 16. Any and all help will be appreciated.
  4. Installing F4 from F3 worked fine, but after installing BIOS F5a on a Gigabyte Aorus Master sTRX40, my Windows installation would not boot. I thought the BIOS wasn't seeing the drive etc etc so I booted from a disc and did startup repair and then it went straight in! I noticed that I no longer have a UEFI partition, or a system reserved partition. Instead I have a random 128MB partition as the F: drive letter on my SSD and a 261MB unallocated partition. My secondary HDD also has a random 185MB unallocated partition. Running system information showed the BIOS mode is Legacy! I have no idea how this has happened! I have never ever converted from UEFI to Legacy! Also in disk management if I right click the SSD, it says "convert to GPT" as greyed out implying it has also been converted to MBR in the process. Please can somebody explain how I can convert it back to UEFI, convert it back to GPT, and get the necessary partitions back so I can boot up and undo what Windows has done? Thank you in advance!
  5. I have B450 asus tuf pro mobo and p660 m.2 from intel on the old computer i made bootable usb with 2nd gen ISO image and format it with GPT - UEFI non-CSM I cant boot from that and i dont know why... im trying now with MBR format UEFI-CSM i thought since everything's new it will work just fine Legacy MBR partition on new PC??
  6. Hi All I have two 8TB Hard drives that arnt showing up in Windows 10, looked in Disk Management and it saying needs to be in MBR not GPT and that i need to reformat the drive. Does anyone know a way to get the drive to work Windows reformatting the drive its a back-up of my server and im in the process of expanding my server and its the only copy of the data i have not on my server at the moment and dont want to risk it. So if anyone knows how i can access the drives in Windows 10 that would be great, Thanks
  7. Near as I can tell, the PC h tried hardware is working. I am trying to install Windows on a 500 GB Samsung EVO SSD. The first time I tried i had an error message that I thought I resolved by unplugging the mechanical HDD I had installed, leaving the SSD as the sole storage. Windows began installing. I looked away from the screen for a bit and looked back up and saw I was back at the install screen. I tried to start the installation again but got an error message at the screen where I have to select the drive to install Windows. The first time (without the HDD connected) the SSD had no partitions. But this time "Drive 0" had 2 partitions. Partition 1 System Reserved 579.0 MB and Partition 2 465.2 GB. But "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Near as I can tell the Windows installer must have been the one to partition the disk. But my question is how do I reformat the drive as a GPT disk without having an OS installed? Is there a way to get the Bios to format the drive? Thanks.
  8. Act 1: The long explanation. I installed a ransomware virus on my main Windows partition. I lost everything. Hundreds of Gigabytes of information encrypted beyond recognition and repair and it was all my fault. It was karma for an elevated praise to the Windows operating system and its unparalleled compatibility. In that text, I present myself as an experienced Windows, OSX and Linux user by skillfully editing out the bits that reveal my true self: an old loser who would infect his own computer. Disclosure: I do not, I repeat, I do not live in my mother’s basement. I, of course, use the “I lost everything” statement rather lightly since -as most users of this forum- I backup frequently, dance awkwardly and repel females with phrases such as: “I love Star Wars” or “I backup frequently”. Act 2: The questions Here is my current predicament (see image): Will i lose my Fedora boot if I install windows in a new sda2? I will delete the infected partition, create it again, format it with NTFS and install windows 7. Will that erase references to my current boot partition? I know an installation disk or a Windows 7 recovery disk can fix a broken Windows boot record. How do you fix the MBR for a Fedora 28 boot in case it’s overwritten? Act 3: Your turn
  9. I'm going to get it out of the way that GPT is the standard when initializing drives, don't need to debate that. However, in theory wouldn't it be possible to expand the storage capacity of MBR drives by using Advanced Format or e512 drives? Standard hard drives have sector sizes of 512 bytes, and MBR works on a 32 bit addressing system so naturally, 2^32*512B gives you 2.199TB which is how we get to the 2TB storage cap on MBR. But consider those AF drives, which generally have 4096 Byte sectors. In theory we could get 2^32*4096B = 17.596TB in storage. There's no point in actually putting this into practice realistically but would it be possible? Currently those drives will emulate the 512B sector system by putting 8 512B virtual sectors on the 4096B physical sector allowing applications and OSs to function normally. Only problem is, you're still limited by the 2.199TB cap as discussed earlier. So this begs the questions, what would be involved in getting a system to run 4096B MBR? Or is it only possible on paper? Thoughts?
  10. Hello, I added a 250 GB SSD to my PC, along with a 3 TB HDD. I used to have only the HDD and it was working perfectly fine. When I added the SSD, I did a fresh install of Windows. In the installation menu I just deleted all the existing partitions on the HDD (without formatting them!) and I then installed the Windows to the SSD. During the setup, I noticed that the HDD was separated into 2 parts: 2 TB + 1 TB (700+ GB actually), but I thought I could fix this in the Windows. Now it seems that I can only use 2 TB and I formatted it successfully in the Disk Manager, but the remaining 1 TB part is left there as "Unallocated space" and it doesn't give me any options to format it, nor the option to expand the 2 TB part. I did my digging in the realms of internets, downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and found out that this unallocated space is formatted as MBR (Master Boot Record). I can't seem to find a solution to format it to NTSC so I can use it only as storage. The HDD is now completely empty and I have all my data on the SSD so I have no HDD data to lose. However, I don't want to reinstall the Windows because I have a fresh install right now and it took me hours to download all the programs and set it up as I like. I also can't just "unplug" the SSD because it's an M.2 and it's located under the GPU so it would be too much fuss. How do I change the format of the HDD from MBR to NTSC or something so I can use its whole capacity? Thanks for your help.
  11. Hlw linus i have a problem. i have a western digital blue internal 1 tb hdd. few month ago it crashed after installing windows 10. then when i try to re use it by formating from disk management is says "Disk is write protected" i also try to fix the problem by using HDD HDD Regenerator it says " Master Boot Record of This Hard drive is Damaged !" Please Help me that how can Restore MBR to the Hard disk or others way . i attached some screenshot below . Thank You
  12. So I'm REALLY confused tight now. There's so much to ask but i don't know where to begin, so I guess I start from the beginning... I recently bought an upgrade to my PC and ended up with this: Ryzen 5 1600 w/ wraith spire cooling MSI B350 Gaming pro carbon Corsair vengence LPX DDR4 3200MHz CL16 16GB MSI gtx 960 (this wasn't upgraded) Crucial BX100 256GB SSD (This wasn't upgraded) WD Caviar Blue 500GB 7200RPM (This wasn't upgraded) The rest I think is not needed but tell me if you want it. And here is a list of my problems/concerns/confusion and what made me go crazy: 1. I don't know what is Windows 10 WHQL support 2. I installed new BOX windows 10 64/32 bit USB but on the non UEFI mode because of this error: windows can only be installed to gpt disks 3. If I switched the whql support, would I be able to install the UEFI windows 10? 4. Does this have to do with my board not recognizing my DVD drive plugged into SATA3 port and that I can see 4 USB drives in windows though they don't exist? (E:/ F:/ G:/ and H:/) 5. does this have to do with my audio problem? 6. Should I update my bios to v15? I have v14 7. Should I reinstall windows but this time with WHQL support enabled and with UEFI mode? (If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's that the USB windows stick has 2 install modes: w/ and w/o UEFI and I don't know anything else about it) 8. Why can't I turn my ram to 3200MHz though the board can read it's XMP profile, changes it to the profile but still shows ram running 2133MHz (the ram is tested for 3200MHz by the manufacturer on their website (search for CMK16GX4M2B3200C16R) and is even samsung B-Die) 9. And last but not least, Can I kill myself now? Because I hate this sh*t and I'm going crazy. If it sounds confusing to you, it's because it is. AMA if you need more explanation over this situation. and please tell me quickly if I should reinstall, because I don't want to settle down too much and have to format everything again. EDIT: Audio is solved, trying the reinstall tomorrow morning, will update my status EDIT2: DVD is working now, I had a bad SATA cable EDIT3: reinstalled windows, did all the stuff you told me to and most of the problems are fixed. I also updated bios which significantly improved post time and now after leaving bios it turns on and off a few times but eventually boots up. Above you can see the remaining problems.
  13. Hi, i'm planning to buy a new HDD(this SATA 2 one is really slow in read speeds because of heavy usage), and my motherboard is Gigabyte B85m D3H. As it supports UEFI i'm thinking of installing Windows 10 with GPT partition scheme. What's the main difference between GPT and MBR. What are the performance differences between these two. Would you recommend WD or Toshiba HDDs (1TB) Thank you
  14. Ok i built a computer for my brother a coupple of months ago, in January, and i recently just did a check up to see if everything was fine, and no it wasent at all. The main problem is that his 1TB SSHD dosent show up in the file explorer and is configured as a MBR drive. I have not got even the slightest clue on how this hapaned but it did and so i looked up a fix for it, you had to do some stuff in the BIOS with some comands and it didnt seem to hard, BUT when i try getting into the BIOS i cant, i press delete or F2 and spam them all throughout the boot but it still dosent do it for some reson, he is useing my old ASRock motherboard(cant remember the name) and i had no problems like that with it so i dont know what to do here, is there maby a way to get it to force start into the BIOS with some CMD magic or something like that, or should i remove the drive, plug it into my computer and do the reformating from it? im not sure what to do so some help would be great, thanks for any replied and any help
  15. So I recently did a bit of search about UEFI and its advantages (faster boot times, more secure, etc). I also learned that my Motherboard (Asus P8 Z77 V-PRO) does support UEFI but my Windows 8.1 is installed with Legacy BIOS I have a custom built rig with an SSD as a boot drive and an HDD for mass Storage I would like to know if there is a way to change my Windows installation to UEFI to take advantage of the extra features (preferably without erasing the whole drive). I would also like to know how to turn my partition to GPT from MBR in the process Also please let me know your personal experience
  16. Guys, I had to install Ubuntu on my system due to project work. So had thought of dual booting Windows 7+ubuntu. But after several tries i was not able to create a partition for ubuntu and also the partition i created via Windows disk management tool. that Partition was also not visible and i was not able to install ubuntu. Luckily i Had spare 500gb HDD lying around and i installed ubuntu on that system and now when i boot my pc.. it directly goes into windows and not into ubuntu MBR i.e GRUB(i guess after reading several articles over internet). My main Question is now how can i make my PC's boot loader to recognize that there are 2 OS in the system and and to give me the option to select 1 on every bootup. Please help me over here....
  17. So i need to convert my SSD from MBR to GPT, but i dont really want to reinstall yet again. So thoughts are backup Convert disk, restore. Question is, for any one that has done a GPT conversion. If you take partition images from a MBR disk can they be restored to a GPT disk? I was thinking of using some thing like Shadow protect. <http> </http> If any one has done this i would love to know what software you used? Basically i'll just reinstall if its going to be an issue but may as well try and just backup/restore.
  18. How to: Format / Initialize a HDD larger then 2TB. This tutorial will show you how to Initialize and format a brand new HDD larger then 2TB If you have just installed the drive it will not show up on your computer yet. This is because the drive needs to be initialized and formatted first. If your HDD is already showing up as a 2TB drive then please use this tutorial Instead: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/94620-how-to-fix-3tb-hdd-showing-up-as-a-2tb-hdd/ Step 1: type "diskmgmt.msc" in the windows search bar and open the program, preferably by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator". Step 2: Once you opened the Disk Management it should immediately show you the "Initialize Disk" popup window. It is very important that you select "GPT (GUID Partition Table)". Press ok Step 3: Now that the drive is initialized we need to format the drive. Right click on the drive and select "New Simple Volume..." Step 4: Press next. Step 5: You can now set the partition size, this is set the the maximum size by default. Press next. Step 6: Use the drop-down menu If you want to change the drive letter. Press next Step 7: Next up you can fill in the drive name (Volume label) Press next. Step 8: Press finish. Victory: Your drive is now formatted and you can use the whole drive instead of just the 2TB. Please like this post if it was helpful. looney
  19. How to Fix: 3TB+ HDD showing up as a 2TB HDD. I see a lot of people are having this problem so here is a guide on how to fix your 3/4TB drive. The problem is that your drive is initialized as MBR instead of GPT. This can be fixed easily but you will lose all your data on that drive. WARNING: You will lose all data on the HDD! Step 1: type "diskmgmt.msc" in the windows search bar and open the program, preferably by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator". Step 2: Once you opened the Disk Management, then right click on the blue part of your drive and select "Delete Volume..." WARNING: Don't continue to step 3 unless you are 100% sure that you have the right drive and that there is no important data left on it! Step 3: Select yes to clean the drive. Step 4: Now right click on the disk name on the left of the bar and select "Convert to GPT Disk" The conversion is now done, the next steps are only there for creating the partition. Step 5: Right click on the drive and select "New Simple Volume..." Step 6: Press next. Step 7: You can now set the partition size, this is set the the maximum size by default. Press next. Step 8: Use the drop-down menu If you want to change the drive letter. Press next Step 9: Next up you can fill in the drive name (Volume label) Press next. Step 10: Press finish. Victory: Your drive is now formatted and you can use the whole drive instead of just the 2TB. Please like this post if it was helpful. looney
  20. I've been stumped on this for a while, and I've found solutions on other forums but none have worked for me. I had a Windows 10 error after it had been installed for a while and so I thought I would just format the drive and reinstall. Nothing I haven't done before, but this time, whenever I try to install Windows, it will go to the menu to select a drive and then it says that the drive is of GPT format and "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu". This is a computer that I custom built and like I said, I've formated drives and everything all the time and this is the first time something like this has happened. I can change the format easily enough and I think the other error it gives me is the problem. Specs: AsRock 970m Pro III AMD FX8350 Transcend 256GB SSD 370 (TS256GSSD370S) (I've also tried using this drive, but the same thing) Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD
  21. So for the last couple of weeks I've been unable to update Windows to build 1709 as my main drive is on MBR and there isn't an easy way to convert it to GPT without reinstalling windows (to my knowledge), so I've been putting off the major updates. But with these recent developments about Specter and Meltdown, should I need to worry about reinstalling to get those updates or will they still roll down to older builds of Win10 (1703 for instance)?
  22. Dear TechJunks, Is this a lost cause, or is there a bit of light at the end of the tunnel? USB powered HDD showing 2 Unallocated partitions (MBR), and 1 visible (2mb FAT) EFI partition. Cannot get to the data this way. Trying to save the data for the father of a colleague. The problem started when my colleague connected the disk to his MacBook. 2,5" 250GB Seagate Momentus 5400.4, running in a Medion single usb 2.0 powerd casing. (Running the drive internally yields the same result) Testing on a Win10Edu64Bit, Tried Win7 and a other offline Win10 system. Here is a screenshot i took with Minitool (same as in DiskManagement) I have added the errorlog with the bootx64.efi and grubx64.efi left in the FAT partition as a attachment to this post. Is there away to restore the beloved pictures, of this old man? bootx64.efi grubx64.efi Seagate Errors.evtx
  23. Hey guys, I get an error Message when I want to install Windows on my SSD. It says like my SSD has a MBR partition and on EFI systems Windows can only be installed on GOT partitions. I'm in "LEGACY+UEFI" mode right now. Can you tell me what to do now? Thank you in advance!!
  24. So, this is a little of a long story. 5 months ago I decided to buy a new SSD, a Kingston A400 240GB SATA3 2.5"/7mm SSD, for my notebook, an HP pavillion Sleekbook 15-105la. Everything went well with the instalation, except the fact that if I turn off the legacy boost mode, uefi doesn't work. Since then, I haven't been able to get any windows update installed correctly and the windows shop also doesn't work. Right now the ssd is installed as a mbr and I suppose I need to change it to gpt, so I tried to make a uefi usb-stick through rufus, with the help of this post https://www.windowscentral.com/how-create-windows-10-usb-bootable-media-uefi-support#uefi_media_rufus and a windows iso from microsoft media creation tool, into my 32gb storage Sd. The problem is, whenever I try to boost the pc through the usb, I get the message checking media [Fail]. I've made sure to deactivate secure boost and to press F9 to boost the installation through the usb. I tried to boost the pc through my old hard drive by connecting it through usb, but it instantly sends me to system diagnostic and tries to repair itself. Now, I want to abstain myself from opening my notebook and reinstalling the old hard drive, also, I don't care about the data in my ssd, if needed I will format it. Thanks for the help!
