Hi all, I am looking to upgrade the storage in my 2012 Mac mini. I am going to be using it in a strange project that I am working on and I need them to be relatively reliable. I only need 500GB drives. I was thinking about getting the Western Digital SA500 but they are relatively expensive for only 500GB drives. I was also looking at the Crucial MX500 but people have been reporting a high failure rate of the drives prematurely. These machines will be spending a relatively long amount of time on each day, but will shut down each night. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks

Last year I purchased a Mac Mini 2011 to use as a home server. MacOS High Sierra was working great, for a while. Starting sometime late last year, the Mac would randomly shutdown and boot loop until I reset the SMC. Then, once I did get it to boot, it would reboot after 30 minutes of idling. This basically rendered the machine useless for me due to how I wanted to use it. Last night, I set up Dual Booting on the machine for Ubuntu. It was working great for a while, and then, it started rebooting every 30 minutes just like MacOS. Today, it will not even start Ubuntu. It begins to boot Ubuntu, and then reboots. I ordered a new CMOS battery to see if that fixes the issue, but I'm not very confident that is the issue. Last note: I upgraded the RAM last year and put in an SSD a couple months ago, although these issues were occurring before I put the SSD in Any help is appreciated! Thanks

So I ended up with a 2011 Mac Mini "Server" Core i7 2.0GHz, 750GB HDD, 128GB SSD, 16GB RAM. I was having some OSX issues out of the box, like it not recognising the Admin password in some parts of system preferences etc, small things.. Then it got stuck in an endless boot loop, which was frustrating. Managed to reset the PRAM & NVRAM & then nothing. Managed to get it into recovery mode so I could reinstalled OSX, it was offering Lion, that was fine, then it gave me the error "not all components could be downloaded" okay, so i'll just create a bootable copy of OSX like I have done in the past. This is where I run into issues, so the latest version of OSX I can run on this is High Sierra, no problems, i'll just get a USB drive & get the installer from Apple, nope, it doesn't exist in the Mac AppStore any more. Okay, my next step was to get the .DMG from Apple of High Sierra & create a bootable via terminal, that didn't work either. Now I have managed to create a bootabale USB drive from inside Windows, but whilst it is recognised on my MacBook Air, it's not recognised by the Mac Mini when I try & use it to boot from at start up by holding down option, and I can't get it to boot from it on my MacBook Air so I can install it on an external SSD, i've run out of ideas on how to get OSX back on this Mac Mini. I've run out of ideas. All I want to do is install High Sierra onto this damn thing so I can use it, it shouldn't be difficult but it turning out to be...

Hey there people! I know I'm going to get some burns because of the fact that I own a Mac, but maybe I will catch the interest of some of you. I recently bought a Mac Mini (late 2014), with these characteristics. I want to upgrade it to a combo SSD + HDD because you know why, but I can't find a way to know if it is possible or not to add a second SATA connector (like some you can find really cheap on Amazon), or if it comes with a PCI connector (like it seems to be the case, via iFixIt). So i wonder what's the best solution: Buying a standard SATA SSD and replace the HDD with it Buying a standard SATA SSD as well as a kit with two SATA connectors and keep both in the Mac Buying a NVME SSD and plugging it in the elusive PCI port. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey, I've been looking into mini computer builds and while scouring the plethora of SBC computers and Nucs. The Mac mini is a powerhouse in terms of CPU, 3.0 GHz Intel "Core i7" (4578U) processor, and 16 GBLPDDR3 SDRAM Could one use an adapter to say 3.0 PCie X16 with the PCIE ssd port built into the motherboard? Thereby running a graphics card without the need of some external hub.

LTT Fam, Moving over to Apple eco system - now the question(s) is: Is it better to buy a M1 Macbook Air and then doc it to my desktop setup OR buy a M1 Mac Mini dedictaed to desktop and have a lower spec laptop for travel (limited these days due to pandemic)? I thought maybe I could save money by buying the laptop and a good docking station or usb-c hub Is there a user experience difference in using an Apple laptop vs. desktop? Any issues connecting to dual monitors? Context: I have an asus RogSTRIX G550 - its huge (pictured on the left under my desk), i'm docking it now to my desktop setup with dual monitors and I have a Macbook Air 2016 I use for travel (it's slow but good enough). Sometimes when I really need to do work on the go, I'll take the Asus - its bloody heavy and barely fits in my laptop bag. And it's absolutly brutal to reconnect all the usb c's etc. It's not elegant and i'm ready to be a grown ass person and have a proper work setup.

I just recently decided to upgrade my living room TV/media setup, and I’d really like to have some sort of computer doing everything a roku could do that’s also capable enough to stream games and such from my gaming PC in the other room via steam or parsec. My initial thought was to buy a NUC or something similar, but nothing really blew me away as being a great deal in that space. Right now, I’m between a ryzen 5000 series laptop (manufacturer or exact cpu doesn’t matter, just needs gig Ethernet at a minimum) or an M1 Mac mini; I’ve found laptops for around $650 that look alright, and (thanks to my dads service in the military) I could get a base model M1 mini for $550. I know both machines are likely a bit overpowered for this use case but I’m looking for something that’ll age well, so which would you recommend?

apple Apple Mac mini mid 2011 Thermal problem
FreqEvans posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hello everyone, I'm Ivan. Straight to the point: I have an Apple Mac mini mid 2011, dual-core i5, 16 GB RAM, HD graphics 3000, SSD. Room temp from 18 to 25, depending on season and weather. My Mac on boot stays at 45-50, when I open Chrome or Safari jumps at 60-70, when I open Logic Pro it goes at 80-85, sometimes at 90. What should I do? (Don't say change Mac please ) -
The M1 Mac Mini was an impressive machine with one major caveat – Apple removed the 10 gigabit NIC. We thought it was because they couldn’t make it work. We thought wrong… Or did we? Buy Apple Mac mini M1 (PAID LINK): https://geni.us/jJPvr

My friend currently has a 2012 MacBook Pro 13" that has treated him well. Surprisingly easy to upgrade and get to everything in it considering its an Apple product. He is looking to upgrade since his MacBook died after a family member spilled water all over it. Thankfully we were able to pull the drive and recover all of his files. He said he doesn't really need the mobility of a laptop anymore since he's not in college, and so he would rather have a desktop. We were thinking either the Mac mini or the iMac. His price point is $500 but we can push it to $700 for something like the 2017 4k iMac. We are definitely open to used and refurbished options as his budget (obviously) doesn't support the price of a new mac. He is a video editor and photographer and is used to the apple ecosystem and has advised me that he would not like to switch to windows. My recommendations are: >2015 i7 4k iMac 16GB RAM, and we could upgrade the HDD with an SSD (yes I know they are glued together with adhesive, but I am comfortable taking iMacs apart) >2017 i5 4k iMac 16GB RAM, 256 GB SSD comes standard usually >2018 Mac mini, probably would get the base model i3 or i5 with a 256GB SSD and upgrade the RAM >2020 Mac mini M1 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD What do you guys think? He thought the 27" iMac was too large for his needs so I stuck with the 4k ones instead of the 5k ones.

What happens if I run out of RAM on my Mac? I really need to upgrade my Final Cut Pro X editing workstation, and therefore I'm looking to buy the new Mac mini with the M1 chip. However, I need this new computer quickly, and the 16 GB RAM model won't be ship to Sweden until early January. But they have the 8 GB RAM model in stock at the nearby Apple Store. Therefore, I'm thinking of buying that model and work on that until January. I checked Activity Control and I found that I'm usually using 7-10 GB of RAM when using FCPX. Since I sometimes use more RAM than 8 GB, what will happen if I edit on this 8 GB computer and run out of RAM?

M1 Mac mini's with 10Gb ethernet listed in internal repair database Linus just may get his wish after all. I suspected we might have to wait for an M1X Mac mini to get 10Gb but it looks like Apple is at least considering bolting 10Gb onto the M1 somehow. Here's hoping it will come out this year. There is a rumor about some sort of "Apple surprise" in December..... Sources https://www.macrumors.com/2020/11/20/apple-m1-mac-mini-10gb-ethernet-parts-list/

I recently bought a Mac Mini from Mid 2010, just to mess around a bit with MacOS. The device came with 4gb of ram but I'd like to buy a new kit of 2x4 DDR3 Memory. I keep finding Corsair's "Mac Memory", What's different about them? And do I need Specific Mac Memory or Can I just put in regular DDR3 SoDimms? Cheers! Liam

mac mini Buy now a Mac mini M1 or wait for M2?
FreqEvans posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hello people of LTT, I'm Ivan, computer techinician from Italy A friend of mine graphic designer that only works in 2D (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Affinity equivalent): no 3D whatsoever, thought to buy a new computer, and he reached me for an advice. He has a Mac Pro 1,1 from 2006 with El Capitan modded for EFI32 and an iMac 21,5" from 2011 (even w/o an SSD!!!). Now, as I wrote in the title: better wait or buy now a Mac mini? (Yep, he wants an Apple device) The Mac mini M1 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage in Italy costs more or less 1200 euros, which nowadays it's the same in dollars. I don't think that with the same amount of money in 2-3 months he will be able to buy an equivalent M2 Mac Mini with the same exact specs... I really think that with M2 will raise the price by 300-400 euros of a base Mac mini. So, what are your suggestions? Thank you in advance! -
TLDR; Why buy a x86 system when Apple Silicon is sufficient for most tasks (browsing, word processing and video editing), unless one's primary use of a PC is for gaming? Is this a valid argument? I've been mostly a PC user (owned a couple of Macbooks back in the Intel days). I'm currently on a Ryzen 9 5950X system with 32GB of RAM and a RTX 3090. I've been thinking about upgrading to 7950X3D until I saw M2 Mac Mini. My primary usage on PC are: Occasional gaming (Arma 3, Cyberpunk 2077 and Doom Eternal) Light coding (web dev) Video editing and transcoding (Davinci Resolve, handbrake and Topaz Video Enhance AI) Photo editing Trading (using web browser) The arguments for me to stick with PC are as followed: Upgradability Gaming The counter-arguments to the above are a followed: I upgrade every 2-3 years and each upgrade costs around USD $2,000. Since I rarely play games now and if Apple keeps on churning out Macs like M2 Mac Mini, I could upgrade every year right? For the work I do, MacOS and Apple Silicon seem to up to the task if not better than their PC/Windows counterpart in terms of performance. I am genuinely interested in getting others' thought on this. I did not intend to start a flame war b/w PC and Mac users. Please keep this a civilized discussion. Thank you

Let me start by saying I'm no Mac guy and know little about OS X, However I was given an old mid 2010 Mac Mini to mess around with running OS X 10.13.6 and having an issue with getting into my Media "server". I have a few computers in the house with sharing enabled and the ones with password logins work just as you would expect. But the one I use to store my media files doesn't have any passwords set and none of the options I use work, Just giving me a failed to connect error. I have tried using "guest" as well as the windows admin account name and both blank or random password (sometimes works on Linux/Android systems). Are there other methods I'm missing?

Hello all, I'm looking at expanding my replacing my current Plex Media Sever (A Raspberry Pi) with a Mac Mini and some external storage. I'm looking at a pretty basic dual bay USB HDD enclosure to chuck 2 3.5" HDDs into. This is the enclosure I'm looking at. I'm thinking about putting these two drives in RAID 1 using the RAID utility in macOS. I would also have a single volume copy of this array in my PC as a backup. I have heard people say that you should not use non-nas drives in a raid array, I was just wondering if there is any merit to that position for my application. These drives won't be moving, and I don't think 2 drives are enough to have vibrations be a concern. What do you think?

Hello all, I currently run a Plex server off a Raspberry Pi 4, it works great for in home streaming since I have some control over clients and their playback settings and can force local quality. However, my USB HDD for that server is getting full, I've got less than 400GB free so I'm thinking about building a home server with a capacity of at least 8TB. The way I see it, I have 3 pathways. Buy a prebuilt NAS with dedicated hardware encoders/decoders such as the Asustor AS5304T ($459 USD before drives) Build a cheap Intel (with quicksync) based small form factor system (cost undetermined but probably equivalent to Mac Mini optoin) Buy a used Mac Mini, probably a 2018 or M1 based system, and couple it with a 4 bay USB HDD enclosure (between $500-$700 USD before drives) From what I've seen, that Asustor is a fantastic plex server, and of course would make a great SMB file share server. So am I crazy for wanting to use a Mac Mini or build my own NAS when a system like the Asustor is so cheap? Thanks,

I’m interested in buying an M2 Mac mini with the stock option, maybe more storage. Simply because I have an iPhone and an iPad with pencil for studying at university. So please don’t hate on me :). And because in my country energy price is quite high, so it would not cost as much as a PC. My question is that how will Plex run on the Mac? It can transcode one singular client with 4K?

I currently own a Mac mini 2018, but I'm considering upgrading to a MacBook Pro 16" 2019. Is it worth the upgrade? My current specs: Mac mini 2018 3,2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB What I would upgrade to: MacBook Pro 16" 2019 2.3GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory Since Macs are already expensive, and especially here in Sweden due to our very high taxes, this specification of the MacBook Pro 16" 2019 would cost me exactly 41249 SEK, which converted is 4044 US-dollar. If I sold my Mac mini, I would probably make about $1800 from it, which means that I would have to pay about $2243 for the upgrade. I pretty much only use Adobe After Effects, which is really CPU-intensive (it pretty much never uses the GPU). When I run Cinebench R20 on my Mac mini, I get a score of 2937, and when searching around, I found that the MacBook Pro 16" 2019 2.3GHz 8‑core i9 gets a score of about 3300. Is it worth the upgrade?

Hey guys! New to the forum, but currently deliberating something. I'm an audio engineer in Los Angeles, where I currently work in a few private studios, and do recording and production on the side. I have a base model 2017 13" MacBook Pro, and the machine isn't keeping up on sessions anymore (I use Pro Tools Native, Logic Pro X, and Final Cut Pro X primarily). I've seen a couple options for used Mac minis, but am also looking at the new 16" MacBook Pro. These are the two options I'm considering: Option 1: Mac mini (used, ~$750 after 32gb RAM upgrade) 6-core i5 3.0ghz, 8gb RAM (upgradable), 256gb SSD, iGPU MacBook Pro 13” (already own) Dual-core i5, 8gb RAM, 128gb SSD Thunderbolt enclosure: ~$200 5600XT (because Apple and Nvidia are still playing the blame game about some laptops from like 2011): $200 Overall Price: $1150 Option 2: MacBook Pro 16” 2019-2020: ($2300) 6-Core i7 2.6ghz, 16gb RAM (soldered), 512gb SSD, Radeon Pro 5300M MacBook Pro 13” (seems to sell for around $600-700, mine's in good shape and is still covered for keyboard repairs) Overall Price: $1600-1700 The base model 16" MacBook Pro provides enough power for what I am currently working on, and will be able to do so for a while. 16gb of RAM is probably plenty, and is a pretty big upgrade from what I have now, but I wonder if 32gb would be noticeably beneficial for 24/96 Logic and Pro Tools sessions (better caching of library samples in Komplete Kontrol or Alchemy, for example). The eGPU seems like a solid way to flesh out the Mac mini into a great video editing rig, and I'd have lots of external and network storage regardless of which one I go for, I just wonder which is going to age better in the long-term. Thoughts? Also, I can't go Windows due to FCPX and Logic. I'll keep it with Mint on a Boot Camp drive, though

Hello, My mac mini 2014 hard drive is very slow and probably failing. I am planning to use my Raspberry Pi has NAS storage for storing and playing my movies and pictures. One question I have in my mind is... if i store my movies in my Raspberry Pi and connect to my Mac via SMB.. will there be any activity on my Mac hard drive (which is very slow) ? For playing my movies will the transcoding happen in my raspberry pi or in the Mac Mini? Thanks!

I have a Mac Mini Server, not sure on the year but it doesn't have a CD drive so its mid 2011+. However the hard drive failed after it had a slight fall, as I was moving house I knocked it off the desk and ever since the drive has just made a clicking noise. Anyways I have accepted this and brought an SSD to replace the drive. The only problem the failed drive has the OS on it. So now when I boot I get the apple logo and a loading spinner but not much else. I knew I would have to reinstall OS X somehow so I thought of using the internet recovery mode. however the mac won't boot into that mode, it doesn't even try. I can get into single user mode and also see the verbose mode on boot. but nothing else. Any tips on what to do from this point? I am hoping to install Ubuntu.
