Hi. I recently bought a Lenovo ThinkStation S20 motherboard in a bundle, and it had a pre-installed Xeon W3550 processor. I want to make it work. However, I've ran into some issues: 1. The slots for SPEAKER, FRONT_PANEL and FRONT_USB don't follow desktop standards. How to connect them using desktop cases? I've asked about on Lenovo forums but I don't think I'll get an answer. 2. It comes with a Xeon W3550, which is supported according to the manual. I have a Xeon L5640, which has 2 extra cores, but it's not listed. Why? The Xeon X5660 (superior), for instance, is "supported". 3. Why does the motherboard support only 24 GB (4 GB per slot)? It has support for the Xeon X5660, which supports up to 288 GB. In this case, am I limited to double-sided (low density) 4 GB sticks? 4. The motherboard has a 4-pin "AUX_12V" connector, which I don't have a PSU for. However, I currently have a Dell PSU that has two separate cables for two processors (that is 2x 4+4 EPS). Can I use half of it? I'll leave the images inside the spoiler. Obs.: the system itself had a manual available, but the motherboard not. I'm very suspicious of the very little info available, like it allegedly supporting non-ECC RAM or supporting SLI. Thanks in advance.

Hi friends I have a 13 year old PC that is still trucking and is proving to be a decent gaming machine even today. Looking for some advice. I want to upgrade the CPU to something more powerful. Looking for some advice on the best CPUs for this old LGA1366 board. I currently have 12GB RAM but the board can take a max of 24GB, will I see a huge difference adding the extra 12GB? Spec i7 920 @ 3.00Ghz 12GB DDR3 GTX1060 6GB MSI X58 Platinum mobo Win 10 Pro Thank you.

so heres the story... my CPU came in today its a x5680, I put it in the motherboard and have a black screen as I power it on with LED Lights blinking (4,3,2) along with the orange power light. What could be my problem? I put another x5680 in and took out the other and gives me different lights then shuts off. i recorded it here. Video 1 will be The first processor I got and Video 2 is the second processor I got. I will also share the ram sticks I received. An Extra note that I put the two sticks that made 16GB in Ram Slots 1 and 2. Hi, Some months ago I decided to dust off an old PC I had which uses a Intel i7 960. As part f the refurb I decided it was about time to replace the old 120mm AIO which had been running for 6 - 8 years however finding a cooler compatible with the i7 960's 1366 socket proved a challenge. I decided to go with a Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 as PCPartPicker, Amazon and Scan UK all said it supported lga 1366 only to find out when it arrived that no it does not support that socket so I am returning that. Some members of this forum suggest I just look for a newer platform as a refurb on ebay so I found this this which appears to be good bang for the buck. I'm planning on running Proxmox with a VM for TrueNAS Scale, a VM for a VPN service (I've heard wireguards good), a VM for some python apps and other lightweight VMs. I'm expecting the i7 960 to not really be able to pull it's weight for all those so I think going with the 5800x from the ebay listing might be good but how would a 5600x cope with my goals? Should I buy a Noctura NHD15 and ask them for a 1366 socket mount kit for the 960?

So I'm repurposing an old PC which uses a Intel i7 960 1366 socket. The PC was using a AIO that's been running for 6 - 8 years so time for a change I think. I decided to go with a Air Cooler as I'm going to use the PC as a NAS/homelab so less noise and less maintenance would be good. I did some shopping around and bought a Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 as PCPartPicker and Amazon told me it was compatible with the 1366 socket only to find out when it arrived that it was not compatible (). I made this post here on the forum and was told that Noctura apparently ship out brackets of older sockets for the newer coolers so reached out to Be Quiet to be told in a very convoluted way that the brackets won't fit the 1366 socket, I have queried this with them to confirm they won't ship me a compatible bracket however I don't hold out hope which leads me to the point of this post: What Noctura coolers do you, the LTT community, recommend? I went on the Noctura website and did a CPU compatibility check for my CPU and these are the results. I've heard the NH-D15 name before but I'm wondering on what ohers think of the other options I seem to have. I am going to query the compatibility with Noctura before I buy one of these coolers to ensure I can get a mounting bracket for the 1366 socket. My CPU can do ~135 TDP altho I can't recall if it's slightly overclocked or not, I am under the assumption that having a cooler with a much higher TDP (say ~250) will allow me to run the fans a tad slower with the cooler acting a bit more passively which would be great for my NAS/home;ab use case.

Hi So I have an 6 - 8+ year old system using an Intel i7 960 which uses socket lga 1366 (otherwise known as socket B, inheriting from lga 775). I decided about a month ago to dig this old PC out of storage and convert it into a NAS with some lightweight VMs. As the PC hasn't been cleaned in about as long as it's been alive, apart from a light vacumming here and there, I decided to give it a proper deep clean before making use of it which was esspaicilly importnat as it's going to be in my office next to a bedroom so near silent is the goal. During the cleaning I realized it was probbarbly time to replace it's old AIO tht's been running all those years and hasn't been cleaned either, my chosen replacement was a Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 which is probarbly way overkill but would help with the near silent goal. I read on the coolers spec sheet that it is compatible with the lga 1366 socket so bought it howver looking at the docs there's no mention of mounting it to a lga 1366 but it does cover mounting to AM4 and lgas 2066, 2011 (-3) square ILM, 1200, 1150, 1151, 1155 and 1700. Did Amazon and PCPartPicker lie to me when they sid it supports lga 1366 or does lga 1366 match one of the aforementioned socket types? Thank for any feedback

Hello, so I tried to overclock my x5660 ( Yes I know its quite old) for about 1 year without success to exceed 4.2GHZ clock speed, I always get BlueScreens, I tried different voltages, multipliers, setting RAM speed very low, watching lots of videos and trying to copy every setting , etc... But couldn't get stable overclock past 4.2 GHZ, even 4.2 requires at least 1.41875 VCore voltage and I seen videos of guys running 4.4ghz on 1.35VCore. At first I thought it was my ram, but after I ordered another 8GB of RAM, it turned out to be the same. Also overheating is not the problem, I am running quite good thermal paste ( Don't know brand) and Air cooler with 3Fans running 2800RPM. I am looking for any help from you guys, because this system is quite old and i want to squeeze every bit of performance possible My PC specs: CPU: Xeon x5660 Now running 4.150 GHZ GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB Motherboard: ASUS ROG Rampage 3 Extreme RAM: 16 GB 1444 mhz : 4GB Hynix, 4GB Nanya, 8GB Kllisre Storage: 360GB SSD, 300GB HDD, 720GB HDD OS: Windows 10 64Bit Bellow is pictures of my BIOS settings. Thanks for any type of help !

Greetings!!! i am looking forward to build a budget 3d modelling Pc using softwares such as 3ds max, Blender, Vray and bit of animation as well.... My options available in area are hp z600 with Dual xeon x5675 (12 core 24 threads) and possibly a Rx570 4gb. Else i have an option for hp z440 with xeon e5 1650 or a similar 6 core cpu and rx 570 as these are costing me about the same in my budget.. I have been told that x58 platform lacks Avx support hence its limitations but still confused as i need my render times to be reasonable... Looking forward for you opinions thanks

Hi: I have accumulated some LGA1366 server and workstation parts and complete systems, and find myself intrigued by the HP, Dell and other server blades that are available on the used server market. Full-fledged dual Xeon servers that cost little to buy, little to ship, and I have spare CPUs and RAM on-hand to get up and running? Sign me up! Well, one little problem... They are of course designed to plug into a proprietary chassis that provides power, connectivity, etc, etc. And while the blades are cheap, those housings are very much not. :-/ Does anybody have any experience with rigging these (hopefully of the LGA1366 generation) to where they can operate independently of the chassis? Or a pinout for the proprietary connectors that mate the two? A bit of a stretch, I know, but I like projects. :-) TIA >>>BULLET>>>

Hello everyone, for a while now I have been building a dual xeon x5690 server and I ran into some issues with the current motherboard and case that I have and I am looking for replacements. What I currently have is the case and motherboard from a Dell Poweredge t410 which was working out fairly well until I realized that this particular motherboard only has one cpu 8 pin connector that both sockets use. It needs a power distribution board connected to the psu to tell the MB how to split the power but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an easy way to make the PDB compatible with the PSU I want to use. Also, with the case being large and steel it was very tubby. With all of the parts assembled it was 70+ lbs. What I am looking for now and would appreciate help in finding is a new motherboard compatible with my procs (LGA1366), and if possible it would be great if it was on the medium to small size. I have found some boards that would work but they are in the range of $400-$500 for some reason. Is there any cheaper than this? Also I'm confused on how to tell if a case is compatible with a particular server motherboard or not. If someone could explain this to me I would be grateful. Thank you all for your time and any help you can provide. Oh and I am looking to keep the combined price of both the MB and the case to around 400USD or less. If this is an unrealistic figure I don't mind being shown what it would cost to make this work. Thanks!

I recently bought an HP Z400 workstation PC that came with an Xeon W3550. I don't know much about the difference between either series of processors. Is it worth replacing it with either an x5660/x5670 and would it improve performance?

I've been playing Destiny 2 for a couple of days and wanted to report that the games very good on this old platform. Currently playing 1080p 60 on high/very high settings with no stutters. I would like to find an overlay that works with the game so I can get an idea of system use and framerates though.

So first let me say that I'm not your know at all but I do know my computers and something has been bothering me. Asus and Intel's lga 1366 socket don't get a long. Now I'm not saying one is making their product incompatible with the other I'm saying the products them selves don't like each other. For instance my turns on fans spin but black screen asus r3e, bad mobo got it. How about my turns on, fans spin but black screen asus p6x58d-e which is lga1366 as well. Both stopped working for no reason not overblocked "bricking ur mobo by overclocking it to far and making it into a block." Why are all asus 1366 boards hell on earth to keep working. And also question i got a asus 1155 board that says "usb over current detected shutdown in 15 seconds" oh and this is while breadboarding with basic. So who knows why this is the way it is or am i the most unlucky guy in the world who cant have a decent computer to own.

Around a year and a half ago I bought a Z800 motherboard off of eBay, and made the necessary adapters to make it work with an ATX PSU, in an HPTX case. I bought 64GB of PC3-10600R for a steal, and paired it with an X5680. Initially I had 2x 970's in here, but I've recently upgraded to a 980ti, and put the 970's to use mining. I'm looking to use my Z800 board for mining, so I figured it was time for an upgrade. I want to keep the X5680, because it has plenty cores, and single threads very reasonably for a 3.3GHz CPU, but I want to get back into overclocking (something I have not done since LGA775/771 mods using an X5470). I've been looking at getting an ASUS P6X58D-E, as they are pretty cheap for what they are, have excellent overclocking features, and I'm familiar with ASUS motherboards. It is advertised as only supporting 24GB of RAM, but in practice supports 48GB (more than plenty), because 8GB sticks of DDR3 were not being produced at the time the board was released. Here's where the problem lies: I am trying to do this upgrade for as cheaply as possible, so I would like to take advantage of my existing RAM if possible. (I could put 6 DIMMs in this system, and leave 2 DIMMs in the Z800 build). I need to find an LGA1366 Motherboard that supports overclocking, and ECC memory. Form factor does not matter (as I am simply going to put it in my HPTX case), details like number of PCI slots, SATA ports, PCI versions, and SATA versions do not matter to me. Most of these boards will have PCIe v2 which is perfectly fine, and I have a SATA 3 expansion card I use for my drives already. Anyone know any good candidates for a board? I know ECC is actually detrimental to a gaming experience, but it's what I have on hand, and for some reason it seems the price of PC3-12800U/PC3-10600U has more than doubled in the past year according to my findings. Thanks guys!

I'm building a rendering pc on a budget of 600$ and I'm going on used market. My build for now is 2 xeon x5650 with supermicro X8DTL-3F mobo 24gb of ddr3 1333 ram EVGA 80+ gold full modular 750wats power supply and I do not know what I should get to cool these cpus. And do I need a graphics card? I'm working with keyshot, autocad, solidworks.

Hey, I have been making a lot of posts lately so sorry about that. Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations of dual LGA1366 mobo that has an actual PCIe 16x slot, not a physical 16x slot that only has 8x wired. I have been looking and can't find any.

Hi so recently I managed to pick up an MSI X58M microATX motherboard for $15 at my local goodwill. I was wondering is it X58 still a decent platform to use for gaming if i were to pair this board with a Xeon X5660 that I already have in my spare parts box. And the GPU im planning on putting an RX 460 or some entry level GPU. Would this combo make for a decent PC for the money or is it better of just to sell the board back on ebay for a profit.

Best motherboard for x58 processors?
Muhammad Osama posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hey guyz. Sorry for my bad english. I asked this question before but didn't get quite the solution it was all over the place. I have everything.. processor (x5670) motherboard (dell precision t3500 mobo) gpu (r9 380) but the one thing i didn't have is a overclockable mobo for this cpu.. due to the lower base clock it struggles in some games and i know if it will overclock to 4.5ghz it will be a beast in performance in 1080p.. i know for this chipset the mobo are quite expensive.. and the main restriction to me is security issues of my country because of that ebay and other famous online websites wouldn't work for me.. but there is a online store which can only be accessable in my country.. so i wanna know best price to performance overclockable mbo for that processor used.. or a cpu + mobo in that price or a little bit higher in use -
So, I got my hands on a set of xeons x5660. Is it possible to fake those x5660 to be a x5680, or x5690. I would like to get those higher clock speeds on my xeons, because I use them on my dual socket motherboard. I mean in theory, x5680 and x5660 are the same cpus except they have different clock speeds.

I have an old hp lga1366 severboard i have at it about a year and have never managed to make it work I can’t find any information online about it. I think it has diffrent power pin outs and I have no idea where the power on pins are and idk what type of ram it needs although I have tried many and no post I have tried using both cpu sockets and only one socket as well as many other things and no post any info and help is appreciated things such as pinouts manuals what computer it originally came out of...

So I'm wanting to build an older rig just for the heck of it! I'm trying to hunt down options for a x58 motherboard, but the prices are inflated really high so far I already have CPU, PSU, RAM, GPU, and a case. What do you guys recommend or suggest? Parts I have: GPU: EVGA 660Ti 2GB PSU: EVGA 600B RAM: 12GB G.Skill Ripjaws CPU: Xeon X5670 Case: Random Thermaltake Case from 2008

Greetings, I wanted to share my recent X58 Build. The main goal was to get the best perfomance as possible for my bucks. **Just to mention it,I live in Germany and Used PC stuff is mostly expensive here** So Lets start. The first contact with the X58 plaform was last year when I purchased a Dell Precision T3500 with a Quadcore Xeon (W3530) This was the time I noticed, Holy S**t this thing flies ! I used it till last month, where I decided its time to move on and Build an X58 system for the Best bang for the buck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a base I used the GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 Revision.1 Now I needed a Processor, I shot this Xeon W3670 on Ebay for 10€ The stock clock speed is 3.20 GHz on Six Cores! I needed a good cooler for this to keep it cool, but I tought the stock cooler will do the job too? NO! The stock one didnt even fit on the board,so I needed to buy a new one. Since I am on a budget i was searching for second hand LGA 1366 coolers but found nothing, So I choosed the Cooler Master MasterAir MA410P Which cost me 50€ Okay ! I had the Mainboard,The Processor and the cooler....now I needed some RAM,Storage Drives,a Graphics Card,Power Supply and a Case....So I asked my friend ebay if he has something for me,and you bet he did ! I went with the ASUS Rog Strixx GTX960 4GB as my Graphics which I got on a ebay auction for 100€ Now I needed some RAM. I wasnt quite sure if this board does support ECC memory (because its cheap),on the forums I found only negative answers. I took the Risk and bought 16gb Registered ECC memory for 20€. I put it on the motherboard, tested it and...It works! Still I dont have the ECC support but I dont need it anyways. To power everything I went with a Cooler Master Masterwatt lite 500W Power Supply,Which I bought New (sadly) for 50€ with the Sotrage I went with an Intel SSD 240GB, and with a Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200rpm Mechanical Drive / The SSD cost me 40€ And the HDD From Seagate, 60€ for 2TB of Space Finally I needed a case, and since I went out of time I bought a new one for 30€ on ebay,It was cheap, really cheap..the quality was...yeah,no that good. I have not ran any benchmarks or similar since I had no time. But I will do it tomorrow and update the thread. I planned to Overclock the Xeon, and since I never overclocked anything I need help,so if anyone knows how its done on this Motherboard let me know in the comments Do you have any recommendations on this build ? maybe to change components and so on ? I would love to hear your toughts on this build!
