This thread describes the issues with installing an Optiplex 7010/9010 motherboard into a 3rd party ATX case. There is another thread for the Optiplex 7010 power switch and power LED pinout. Optiplex 7010 power switch I have observed if the front I/O cable is detached from the motherboard, there is an 'Alert! Front I/O Cable failure.' error message when booting up the PC. The F1 key must be pressed to continue. I thought I would investigate what causes this and other 'Alert!' messages. The Optiplex 7010 and 9010 (I have both) appear to use virtually the same motherboard in the mini tower (MT) variant. The key difference is 9010 has BIOS support RAID. The Precision T1650 looks very similar and also supports ECC RAM - it is also offered with Xeon e3-1200v2 family of processors, the fastest being the i3-1290v2. The fastest Dell certified processor for the 7010/9010 is the i7-3770. However, the e3-1230 v2 Xeon processor is apparently known to work in the 7010 too according to one Youtube video posted back in 2015. The Front I/O socket on the motherboard is smaller than normal. It appears the pins have a 2mm pitch instead of the typical 0.1" (2.54mm) pitch too. Update (30 Oct 2018): I've since discovered a post on reddit created by 'BlastingKap' two months earlier, who had also examined the Front I/O pinout on an Optiplex 7010: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/98y8x2/optiplex_7010_9010_motherboard_transplanting/ Update (28 Apr 2019): I also came across this youtube video https://youtu.be/Bz6s4wB-MDM Update (2 Jul 2021): Just a quick update. I'm still using 7010 and 9010 MT models. No changes to BIOS or Windows drivers since posting in this long thread more than 18 months ago. The 9010 runs macOS Mojave, I haven't upgraded to Catalina. Only issues I have encountered is the task bar in Windows 10 failing to respond every once in a while for past few years - restarting the Windows Explorer fixed the problem every time. I recently found instructions on how to reregister Start process - too early to say whether it will fix the problem once and for all. I fitted a cheap i5-3475s cpu into the 7010 in late 2020. In early 2021, the 7010 also started to freeze or crash after exactly 30 minutes of use - I traced the problem to possibly defective or poorly seated Samsung PC3-12800 DIMMs. I replaced the pair with Hynix PC3-12800 DIMMs. Note the presence of a 1k resistor to limit the current through the LED. The front USB3 sockets are served by a separate cable which plugs into blue coloured USB header socket on the motherboard. The pinout for the microphone and heaphone have a non-standard layout. The HDD LED requires an extra 1k resistor. The USB2 pinout seems to have a standard layout but a normal 0.1" pitch USB2 header plug won't fit onto the 2mm pitch pins. It wouldn't surprise me if the Optiplex 7020/9020 and Precision T1700 uses the same pinout for the Front I/O connector. The key features of the 7020/9020/T1700 are the use of Intel 4th gen Haswell processors. The MT/DT motherboards have an 8 pin power connector, and a 24 pin ATX to 8 pin adapter is required when planning to use a third party ATX PSU. The Optiplex 7010/9010 runs Windows 10 just fine. I have encountered some USB3 and HDMI issues. Fortunately, there are some fixes for them. The 7010/9010 can run macOS High Sierra or Mojave when using a processor with Intel HD4000 graphics, otherwise specific graphics card such as a low cost GT710 is required for any other processor. A mac/macbook is required to create the USB bootable installation media for macOS. https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/guide-install-high-sierra-or-mojave-on-the-dell-optiplex-7010-9010-desktop-pc-revision-ii.251736/

Greetings, I currently own a hefty Tascam US-1800 as my primary audio interface for production work. However, that's almost permanently hooked up to the setup in the studio, and I was considering adding an audio interface to my build (located elsewhere) for convenience. Initially, I thought I'd go with a smaller USB interface like my 1800, but I don't have a whole lot of space, and am a bit of a sucker for neatness. While I'm aware of sound-cards, I was wondering if anyone might know about an interface that fits in one of your case's 5.25" or 3.5" external drive bays, effectively creating a front-panel audio interface, giving me quicker and easier access to connections and such. I've seen several USB 3.0 hubs that work in this way, fitting into an external drive bay and connecting to a USB 3.0 header on the motherboard. I was curious as to whether there were any audio interfaces or sound cards that functioned similarly, with perhaps a couple of XLR and/or line inputs. Regards, Aereldor.

I've recently been having audio interference/ random audio pops from front panel. I was recommended the Apple USB C to 3.5 mm jack cable, but the issue is still happening even with it. I believe I may need to use my motherboard audio outs, but obviously there's no 3.5 mm jack to use there. Is there a good DAC/ interface (that's not too expensive) to allow me use my earbuds and would also eliminate the audio pop/ crackle? The pop/ crackle seems to only happen during YouTube videos and while streaming shows/ movies. Also only at certain points of a show/movie/video. Please let me know.

I have wasted a lot of time trying to find the front panel port on my motherboard and i can’t seem to find it i’ve looked at many Youtube tutorials but they seem to not help me with anything, maybe my Motherboard had a strange layout or something i did seem to find a cable with Front panel written on it but cant seem to find where to put it in. Right now i have in a brown highlighted cable which is coming out of that cable which splits to like 5 bits (sorry first time builder). When i try to turn it on only my ram turns on, here is some pics.

Budget (including currency): Country: Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I talked about this before on other topic but got 0 replies xD, I'm from Portugal and I made a great deal on a corsair 4000D case for just 60€ but I'm a little concerned with the front panel and I would like more airflow, was wondering if I can get the corsair 4000D airflow front panel and install it on mine, and if so, where can I order it from Portugal? Thank youu guys!

if I want to play audio through my monitor, it works but when I plug in my headphones, I do not hear anything. It doesnt even prompt it with a plugged in notification; and I'm pretty sure it isnt plugged in due to device manager. I'm not sure what I did wrong; I replicated exactly how it was in my old case; Plugging in the HD audio cable into the right slot. The front panel usb cables are working. The case in question is a p500a. My motherboard is a prime h310 plus. How can I get audio to play through the front panel audio jack?

So i wanted to make my front panel audio working on my pc, but there is a little bit problem, i use my old case to save budget HP DC7100CMT from 2004. Because its old i decided to check the front panel audio connector connections using a multimeter and i found something strange. some of the connector is shorted. After i check on the manual i found out the shorted connector. Front panel connector perfectly fit to the motherboard header. Pin 2 (Ground) and pin 7(FAUDIO_JD) Short Pin 5 (Line2_Right) and pin 6 (SENSE) Short pin 9 (Line3_Left) and pin 10 (SENSE) Short Mobo : Aorus B450 Elite 1. What does FAUDIO_JD and SENSE means? 2. Is this normal?

Hi ladies and gents, I have recently purcahesed new mobo - Gigabyte b550 aorus pro ac, and was aware there is a usb 3.2 gen 1 header for front panel, but it is a 20 pin connection. On case - Lian Li o11 air mini, there is a usb c conector for front io. Any chance there is an adapter so I can get complete functionality on the front io? Thanks in advance!!

this problem started from one day to the next, about a week ago it happens that when I connect my headphones to the front panel and I start listening to music, sometimes the sound is slightly distorted, with static, sometimes super low, similar to when you do not insert all the 3.5mm jack. As I clarify the problem does not always happen and that's what worries me is that it could be the integrated audio of the motherboard that is failing? connect the headphones directly to the rear audio port of the motherboard and is heard perfectly, without distortion and clear. I have already reinstalled drivers, the HD audio is enabled in the BIOS but it keeps happening, a week ago the front panel audio was fine, turn off the pc and the next day and began to do that. What is most likely? that the front panel of the case is damaged or that the integrated audio of the motherboard is failing?

Hi all, I built a PC for my cousin recently. He was using a USB headset for a while, but he just bought a razer kraken headset with mic/output jacks. He couldn't get the front panel audio to work so he asked me to help, and I noticed that neither the front panel or rear panel appeared in settings and the realtek drivers weren't installed. After installing the drivers, checking audio devices under control panel and restarting several times, I just can't work out why neither the rear panel or front panel is turning up. I'm not there with him now but he sent me a picture of the front panel connected on the motherboard and it seemed to be plugged in fine. I was wondering if anyone had any solution to get either or both audio inputs to work? (The razer headphones work fine-he tested them on his laptop with a USB adapter) Build: MSI B450 Tomohawk, Ryzen 5 2600X, GTX 1070

Hi. I have WD 1TB external hard drive that is supposed to be connected only with 1 cable to USB port. It worked this early this year in front panel USB 3.0 ports but now it does not. It is powered on but drive letter does not appear. It works however with 6 ports on rear panel. I tested both front panel USB 3.0 ports with USB thumbdrive and it works. I had motherboard replaced before that so I wonder what could it be that changed and my hard drive refuses to work in them.

Hi, I recently bought a p400A phantex case and the front panel buttons are not working properly. From the manual I see that the from left it should be RBG button, second led and third reset reset, d-rgb, d-rgb color. However when I press the reset d-rgb button, nothing happens. Led button, nothing happens (edit: I think I need the d-rgb cable connected for that.. sorry, the reset issue still persists), And the first leftmost button (reset) just either shuts the fans off and turns monitor off as if the computer just wen to sleep but keeps the ligths (ram, gpu, front panel) on, or just starts blasting the fans at full speed (turning monitor off) both feel as if the system is restarting, but isnt, the power button at this point stops functioning. My full build: 5700 xt nitro tuf gaming x570 plus Also, when I start the computer the fans are red and then sometimes just stay red, and sometimes switch to the RGB mode. They are controllable from the armory when they function normally, but when they stay red only the "dark" setting works switching them off. The RGB ram sticks work all the time. I have checked a billion times the reset and power pins on the motherboard following the x570 manual I also plugged in one of the rbg cables coming from the panel into mobo (shown on picture) and the other one left as is. Feel free to ask any questions. Any help or ideas appreciated.

Hello, which type of front panel do you think works best for airflow? Doesn't need RGB, just good airflow. I've seen mesh panels, tempered glass and some flat fronts. I assume mesh panel works best since it doesn't obstruct airflow much but I'd like to know your opinions. I'd appreciate if you could explain your choice a bit, too. Thanks in advance.

So I've noticed that the red wire on the USB front panel connector cable is completely broken. None of the red wire is sticking out of the black USB header meaning I do not think it can easily be replaced. Is there any suggestions on how to get an alternative to this? I was looking at this product, but I'm not entirely sure it is the correct cable. I can upload pictures if needed.

Other owners of the Corsair 400c case with or without the window, I have a question. How often do you remove the front panel to clean your filer, and how easy to remove is your front panel? I have had bad experiences with clips and plastics before and I cringe when I try to remove my 400c's front panel. I resort to removing both side panels 99% of the time so I can push on the clips a little bit so they free up without such direct force from pulling on the panel. The time for another cleaning is evident by the circle of dust accumulating on the filter now, and I am apprehensive about broken clips. Thoughts? Suggestions? Experiences? Anyone break their clips yet on this case?

Last Christmas season, my friend gave me a Kotion Each G9000 Headset as a gift. This came with a combo plug (mic and audio in a single 3.5mm plug). From the reviews in youtube, it should come with a splitter for desktop pc use but it did not. I don't want to buy one that is why I made one myself. Now, I can use my headset on my desktop pc through plugging it at the front panel. But here is my problem, I cannot use this in rear panel. I tried testing this to other PCs but still I can't make it to work. I tried to use my cousin's headset which has separate plugs for audio and mic. And it functions flawlessly whether it is plugged in the rear or front panel. Through the use of multimeter, I tested the connectivity of the ground contact of the mic and audio plug of my cousin's headset. And I found out that they do not share the same ground. When splitting the audio and mic of a headset with single plug, even if the are splitted to two different cables, they still have a common ground. I thought of a way to split my plug and make it with two different ground points but this involves cutting the cables of my headset. Is there anyway I could use my headset through the rear panel without destroying it? Sorry for my english.

So basically, I was planning to paint the front and top panels of my Zalman Z9 Neo case white, as the colour difference between the black steel and the black plastic annoys me. Do any of you know if it is possible to completely remove the front panel, so I can spray paint it? You can pull it off, but the front panel connectors are still connected to a little PCB there (picture attached) There cables seem connected pretty well, and I don't want to break them by pulling them with too much force. Does anyone know if these connectors are actually removable? Secondly, can you remove the front panel door, because I would like this to remain black and so taking it off would allow me to easier paint the front panel itself and avoid getting paint on the door. Thanks
