Currently on hold with Cox, but I feel like the LTT community will be 10x more helpful Currently running on Cox 1Gb fiber. Everything is "okay" so far, except for my roommates down in the basement. We are 5 people living in the same house, but some have issues with the internet. I was looking to buy a modem and a router but then realized that I would have no coax to hook up the modem. My question (as stated in the title) is, does the ONT box, that was installed by Cox, work as the modem? Could I just plug in a router, set it up, and have running wifi? I'm looking at the ASUS RT-AX82U currently, but I also don't see it on the Cox website as a "certified" device. Thank you all in advance.

I'm coming here today since I'm looking for an answer on what actions to possibly to or take. I'm extremely frustrated since I haven't been able to properly do a single online video game without experiencing extreme issues for well over a year. I don't mind people knowing but I'm in Irvine California and I'm honestly surprised to have this issue at a house in this area. So right now my ISP, Cox communications, is saying this is completely a COVID related issue and because of COVID they can't fix what is happening to my house that it'll take time. I have over an entire year of paper trail on my account with my ISP, with over 40+ techs coming out to my house trying to resolve the issue with more than half of them giving me a absurd reason to my packet loss issue or just wanting to leave as soon as possible. An example of the most absurd reason from a tech was, "Since my surge protector is more than 5 years old, it degrades in performance which is making it so it can't supply enough electricity to my modem/router." However, they supposedly have figured out what is wrong with my internet, back in January. Absolutely no follow ups on what is going on and every time I've called in to get in contact with the original local supervisor who was helping me they refuse to call back. Since COVID, they've said the issue is that my node is overloaded so they're going to split the node since it's at a constant 90% usage and at night being completely overloaded. Other than that, I have swapped out my Modem, Router, Ethernet cable, tried on WiFi and wired devices. They've come out and replaced the tap, they have replaced pretty much all the wiring into my house including some of the coax cable splitters, wires etc. The supervisor who I was initially talking to tried to constantly blame my equipment, after months of testing from June -> December of '19 it finally turned out that my equipment was not at fault. I'm uncertain on where to go from here, what I can possibly do to attempt to escalate the situation further. I feel like they know they are the only providers in my area so they don't want to do jack squat and fix the issue. Best part about all this is, my mother lives streets away and she has no issues because she has fiber. TLDR; I have bad packet loss, this has been going on for 1+ years, ISP wont fix, supervisors fail to call back or just disappear. I can't switch since they are the only ISP in my area and not sure what to do. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

So here is my debacle, I use the ISP Cox and have recently upgraded my internet from 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up to 300 Mbps down and 30 Mbps up. Before upgrading my internet my real-world download speeds were about 1.8-2.5 Mbps down when downloading from google drive or steam for example. Now after upgrading, my speed has not changed. However, when doing a speed test it shows speeds of around 30 down and 10 up. When using my phone (iPhone 6) from approximately 10ft away from my wireless router without any obstructions on the 5Ghz band, when I do a speed test I get about 270 down and 30 up. Another strange observation: my router is outputting under 50 Mbps to my outputting powerline adapter. Note this is on the routers first numbered Ethernet port if this would make a difference. *I have attached an image of my network connection.* If any other information is required let me know. Overall my real question is how to receive faster internet on my desktop that has a wired powerline connection to the router, why my speed test show significantly faster speeds than I get in real-world downloads, and what may be slowing my speeds down?

Hi! My internet at my house has been messed up for a while now. I did some speed tests with my laptop connected directly to my router with an ethernet cable. For the first speed test I did, I got a 33.43 Mb/s download speed and a 8.44 Mb/s upload speed. (http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5894221192) For the second one, I got 4.74 Mb/s download speed and a 4.27 Mb/s upload speed. (http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5894223883) For the third and last one, I got 33.17 Mb/s download speed and a 7.02 Mb/s upload speed on a completely different server. (http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5894248531) Can someone please help me try to figure out why this is happening? (Why it just completely slowed down for the second test) Thanks!

About a week ago I had my ISP come out to install fiber lines for gigabit internet. They ran the lines fine no problem (however they are still above ground in my backyard and have yet to be buried, said someone should be out in around 14 days to bury). It has been below freezing point past few days but no "severe weather", some light rain here and there.First day of having it installed and setup it ran completely fine no problems, at this point I had no router, just the one installed by ISP on my wall, so I was directly plugging into that, no wi-fi or anything. I purchased a xr500 Netgear pro gaming router after a day to set up all my home connections, internet seemed completely fine and stable for about a day. Late that night after purchasing my xr500 the alarm light went completely red and service was gone (on the wall "router", not the xr500), after calling my ISP and having them come out and take a look, according to them the connector from the line outside to inside the house was bad and they had to replace.They told me light signal coming to and from the house was fine but signal inside house was bad, which seemed to be resolved after the connector switch. Internet went back up and I had a planned gaming event with a lot of friends to attend to so I went to rush back into it. At this point I immediately realized discord was being extremely robotic for me and I was getting severe packet loss in discord. I spent around 2-3 hours on Tech support line with Netgear, seeing as if I plugged directly into wall modem everything seemed fine. Tech support told me my router might have remembered a bad data connection due to fiber line being messed up temporarily, performed multiple factory resets and tweaked some settings and didn't help even slightly. Had to get off the phone with tech support due to gaming event and just played plugged into wall modem. I noticed some roboting issues in discord at this point, just nowhere near as severe as if I was plugged into xr500.Finally I decided to return the xr500 for a new one to eliminate the chances of that specific model being messed up, and it didn't help at ALL, roboting issue still there severely, some webpages take forever to load, service seems spotty. I've been running pingplotter the past day or two trying to pinpoint whats going on, I had severe packet loss running to discord servers, twitter, and even google. However I decided to run a longer length pingplotter while plugged directly into wall modem, can post screenshots.Any advice and or suggestions would be great.Also if there's any IP's I need to hide on the pingplotter screenshot that would be nice to know, don't wanna accidentally give away sensitive information.

So 2 or 3 days ago, I began to experience major rubberbanding on CSGO. Had a 20-30 ping and 150-250 fps. So, most likely not hardware. However, I am on wifi (using wifi dongle with 150mbps max) with a 45mbps down and 8 mbps up. Never had any kind of lag before, and now its every game I go into. I have changed all the rates and update rates to no avail. I also have up to date drivers. My isp is Cox. Any ideas on what I should do to fix the rubberbanding (no packet loss, just some 3-10% choke)? Help is greatly appreciated.

Ok, let me explain, back in 2015 We switched from at&t internet (15 download 6 upload) to cox internet (100 download 10 upload). Everything was fine and dandy through the holiday season no hidden fees, no hoops to jump through, it seemed perfect. but there was a law Passed recently in Ohio (where I am currently residing) where they can no longer slow down the internet speed (Throttle) when more people were on the internet in my area. A month after out bill on Christmas day, they put this data usage cap OF ONLY 700GB per month! and if you go over its $10 per 50gb you go over. Now YouTube and Netflix are playing constantly around the house with 5 family members You can see how fast the data just disappears. But I noticed that when we would start getting close to the data cap (about 100gb's left) That the videos would just buffer non stop. And to get a constant watchable non buffer video I would have to watch at 240P! wtf is that? Since then we have upgraded to 300 download and 30 upload with a 2000Gb limit. But that throttling that was going on, Can we sue them? Should we even try? any help is appreciated!

Hey LTT Fans, do any of you live in the San Diego area? If so, let me know which internet you like better. I currently am paying way too much per month for cox internet (i think its the second from the top tier) and am only obtaining 8000kb/s down and 800kb/s up on my 5ghz wireless N setup. Would I benefit from going to a 802.11ac 5ghz network and using the gateway (modem+router, 5ghz or 2.4ghz n) for my secondary network? We also might need to switch cable companies and ATT has a highest advertised speed of 45mbps which is low because right now apparently my advertised internet speed is 100mbps which seems legit because I can constantly get 8000kb/s when I am connected to the 5ghz network and I am not quite ready to give that speed up. Thoughts?

I upgraded from a 5+ year old wifi router and modem about 3 days ago. Everything was smooth and fast when I first set it up, but now for whatever reason my PS4 and Windows 8.1 PC have very bad connections. They will either refuse to connect all together, or will briefly connect with less than 50 kb/s download and upload. I can't even load speedtest.net. I have pinged a couple of different sites and not once has all four packets made it, and the few that do have 600+ ping. I have been trying for the past 9 hours to fix my PC only to just recently find out my PS4 has gone to garbage too. I've tried: Updating the drivers (both with the automated Windows feature and going directly to the website for the drivers and they both show I am up to date.) Changing the WiFI channel. Restarting everything many different times and different ways. Changing between b/g/n modes on the router. Using different connections to the router (2.5ghz and the guest connection.) Changing the security settings of the router (WEP, WPA2, and open) Scanning my PC for viruses Looking for programs that might be limiting my bandwidth. I big possibility is that the WiFi router doesn't send a very reliable signal. I connected my 3DS to it on the same floor as my PC and the signal strength was all over the place. My PC is two floors away from my router, which is in my basement (I know this is the worst possible place for it, but the idiot that wired my house put the living room, the basement, and most of the top floor all on the same breaker so we can't even have the TV, space heater, PC, and washing machine going at the same time otherwise we trip the breaker.) My PC is a prebuilt Dell Inspiron 660. Intel Core i5 (3rd Gen) 3330 / 3 GHz Windows 8.1 64-bit 1tb hdd 8 GB RAM (2x4GB) Dell Wireless 1506 802.11b/g/n card (2.5ghz) Intel Integrated Graphics My WiFi router is a Belkin AC 1200 DB Wi-Fi Dual-Band AC+ Gigabit Router (model: F9K1113) P.S. I was in the thesaurs website, and I got a pop-up from cox claiming that I have "zeus virus". But I was so stupid that I clicked on a link , there was two links one that says something like "click here" and the other at the bottom that said "learn about cox alerts" I clicked on the one that says "learn about cox alerts". What should I do now??
