Hi, to explain as concise as possible. I am running out of C: drive/boot drive (256GB) space. I want to buy an ssd that is much larger and clone the C: drive to it, it contains my OS and loads of other things I don't want to tamper with, as well as personal documents etc. Is this possible? Is there anywhere, where I can follow a step-by-step guide? Would I need to manually set this new SSD to be THE Boot drive after cloning? I don't want to reinstall the OS or any other programs if possible. I play a lot of games on my PC and I've had this rig since 2016 and it has gone through multiple upgrades in the same tower to the point that only the C: drive is the only Original part. I'm not a PC wizz although I've probably had more time working with my computer and building it than the average person. I have this feeling that all my data is interlinked across all the drives. I never install games on the C: drive, but programs like Steam, EA, Riot Games, etc. have made their own paths on the C:. I also have like peripheral software on it as well like LGhub, Corsair ICUE, Bitdefender, etc. Please explain like I'm 5, I appreciate all the help and advice, thanks for your time. So I have a 512gb SSD WD drive on an old laptop of mine and my boot drive is a 128gb Patriot SSD which are both boot drives on each respective system. I also have another desktop that uses an HDD boot drive. So my question is; How can I back up all of them (cloning or something) -provided that the 512 GB SSD is already out of the laptop and on my main desktop- and just make a switch(512 in my main rig, 128 on the second desktop) with the same operating systems on each pc ?? I mean clone the 128 on the 512 and then my HDD on the 128. Is it possible? How can I do it? Is it safe? How do I back up all of them in case of something happening?

Hi, it’s my first time posting here since googling has helped solve any issues I’ve had in the past, but this one has stumped me. with some games like valorant now requiring secure boot and TPM 2.0, aswell as windows 11 needing it, I thought I’d enable it like many friends and websites suggested me to. upon enabling FTPM in my bios it completely bricked my windows boot drive. Using other drives have worked but my main nvme SSd refuses to show that it has windows at all. Using a windows install media repair on a flash drive just says there is no windows available to repair. Here are my specs in case there’s a glaring issue I didn’t see when researching compatibility. Ryzen 9 5900x asus rog strix b550-f WiFi 16gb gskill tridentz neo Samsung 980 nvme ssd I’m praying someone else has had this problem before cause I have no idea what to do now, and haven’t heard of this happening to anyone else. any help is appreciated!!!

I bought my brother a new motherboard and cpu and boot drive. I have no idea how to proceed now that I have tried to get started. He has 5 drives in his PC with over 6 TB of data. I got a 1 TB M.2 and a 3 TB hard drive brand new. How do I get windows on the new boot drive and then migrate or transfer his account and data. he has games and save files scattered across all his drives. Would something like raid be worth doing to better manage his files? I've never done it before. Is there a way to backup only his most important files without having to select every folder individually? I don't even know what folders to select. I have built PC's before, but never upgraded one like this before. Thanks, I could really use the help. I feel bad for buying him a nice new CPU, and I thought I could do this. Now I have no idea what to do to get his PC upgraded and not lose all his files and important data and make him start from scratch. -

I was thinking on going with the Kingston A2000 1 TB. I will mainly use it for gaming and allround.

I noticed this problem where my boot drive priority resets whenever I manually restart my PC (its about 1 week old). I have to reenter the BIOS to reconfigure the priority to be able to boot. It only happens on manual restarts (so far). All auto restart due to updates or shutdowns/sleep do not have this problem. Does anyone know why? Thanks P.S. I have 2 drives, 1 NVME SSD & 1 HDD and I am using a B450 AORUS Pro Wifi Motherboard if that helps. -
So I am building a new computer that will have a 500gb M.2 SSD for the boot drive. I am getting a X570 board for the build but I am wondering if I really need a Gen 4 SSD for the drive. It is about 50 dollars cheaper to get a Samsung 980 Gen 3 compared to a 980 Pro Gen 4 SSD. Is there any major speed difference with PCI Gen 4 that would make me want to get the 980 Pro?

Hello all, thanks in advance! This issue is not happening every time, but it has been happening often and it's very frustrating! I seem to notice it particularly happening after restarting from an install or update. It could just be coincidental. If I try to reboot and go into the BIOS to change the boot priority, my M.2 with the OS on it does not show up as an option. I have to physically uninstall the M.2 and reinstall it. Once does this, the system boots fine. I just don't understand why it keeps happening. I also don't understand why physically uninstalling the M.2 temporarily solves the problem. See PC specs below. Alright so to start from the beginning: - I made my RAM speed too high in BIOS (PC no longer turned on) - I took the CMOS battery out for 5 mins (Now pc turns on and goes into BIOS) - BIOS is fully reset - I make some changes and then save and reset, all LED on mother board except for "BOOT" show functionality - PC then automatically goes back into BIOS (doesn't post) - I then went onto ASUS support page and downloaded latest drivers for BIOS hoping it would let my pc recognise my SSD as a boot drive - I have an SSD which i had booted from prior to this ordeal without any complications - I also have a HDD for main storage and both the SSD and HDD aren't recognised - I even downloaded windows installer onto a usb willing to format my SSD to then be used again, but even in the windows installer, my SSD and HDD failed to be recognised. Tho they still appear in the BIOS SATA Configure settings - I'm lost for words as to how a pc isn't able to identify that the RAM couldn't go so far and just reverted back to the original instead of forcing me to CMOS and ruin my boot process -I'm include pictures of BIOS settings and what not:

So I have bought an SSD. I want to change my boot drive from my HDD to the new drive. I do not want to Clone my whole drive. I just want to clone the operating system to the SSD then delete the operating system of my HDD. Any help would be lovely.

Hello, So I noticed that my 250 GB SSD has been running out of space. I only use that as my boot drive so it surprised me. I ran TreeSize and found out that it was my Windows Temp folder filling up to until there was no more space on my drive. I deleted all of the Temp files and after about a week it filled back up. I ran disk Cleanup but that did not help. The only things I've really changed on my pc since that started is I added a new 250 GB SSD and installed Halo Infinite. So I have two 250 SSDs and a 1 TB HD. Any Suggestions would be great. I've worked Tech Support for 5 years now and have never seen this issue before. Thanks in advanced.

A few days ago, I got a new 1TB HDD. I had been experiencing some issues for a couple weeks so I decided to format my boot drive which is a 240GB SSD. I share this pc with my two siblings and we all have our own user files which we don't want to lose, so I cloned the SSD onto the HDD and after I made sure everything was there I formatted and installed windows on it. I now have 2 bootable drives that I need to either unplug one or swap SATA cables to determine which one I boot into. And when I try to access the HDD user files when booted from the SSD it loads for a long time and nothing happens, so I booted from the HDD and copied the user files first directly into the user files on the new windows, and after that I tried copying straight to the SSD and still the same issue. When I boot to the SSD after copying, I don't see the files I copied. They're simply gone. If anyone has any idea how I can fix this or get around it please let me know ASAP. The files take forever to copy then it's all gone like I've done nothing. Edit: another issue that I forgot to mention is that the PC won't shut down properly sometimes, the system is off and everything but the machine itself isn't. Solutions for this are really appreciated too PC specs: (very old ik) Core i7 2nd gen Nvidia GTX 1050Ti from MSI 8GB DDR3 ram 240GB SSD (forgot the brand) 1TB WD purple HDD The PC itself was a Lenovo thinkstation but and these are the changes made it to it (and a different power supply but idk what that is either) -
Hey guys so I have an issue I have been unable to find any solution for: I went from a computer that worked perfectly, to then letting it sit for 2 days, and then when I came back, it began really falling apart. It will blue screen for a number of reasons, and give me differing area codes. For instance, I got (just yesterday while troubleshooting) a PFN_List_Corrupt, Memory Management, and two KERNAL_TRAP error codes. After trying to run CHKDSK, and it still failling, I decided to just remove the SATA drive it is on. This decision to just remove the drive, since there's nothing super important on it, came after trying to work through the boot cycle for about 2 hours. I then downloaded another windows file onto a flash drive, and then downloaded it into my NVME drive; however even after switching between EUFI and Legacy UEFI, it made no difference. I am still unable to select to boot of of my NVME despite the SSD being removed. Here is my build: CPU: i7-8700k Ram: 16 Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3600 mhz GPU: 1070Ti Motherboard MSI z370 I assume theres no need for the PSU and Case, etc.

Hello everyone, EDIT: I just realized that I was suposed to post this in storage devices. I dont know if I can move it myself though. I am looking into building a new system and am considering a separate boot drive for the OS. But before making any decision I hope to get help with a couple of questions. 1). Is there any disadvantage with having a separate boot drive for the OS (Windows)? 2). Is there any advantage with choosing a very fast SSD such as: · Corsair Force MP510 SSD (256 GB) – PCIe Gen x4 M.2, Seq. Read 3100, Seq. Write 1050 ----- Article number: CSSD-F240GBMP510 3). Do a boot drive for the OS need a high TBW (data can be overwritten many times). 4). Will a separate boot drive for the OS impact Nvidia’s 30 series direct memory access (the one where they bypass the CPU and read directly from the SSD? What I just want to make sure here is that there won’t suddenly be any problems if the graphics card reads from another SSD than the OS boot drive. 5). A more general SSD question. I have seen the videos LTT has put up on manufacturers changing the components which has led to performance drop and not changing the listed specs. Is there any way I can confirm the specs of the SSD or is it believed to be "safe" to buy from for example Corsair or Samsung? Grateful for any help you can give!

Hello, I currently updated my Rig from a (Z97/i7-4790k) to a (B550/R7-5800x). In my switch of components I was able to plug the 1TB HDD and 2.5'' SSD from my old system into my new system without issues (which I expected, and thus did most of my files and saves migration to these drives). However, these drives that were successfully move from old to new didn't had windows installed on them. After updating my file path of steam and other software to the new letter drive I realized some of my old files (like game saves) were saved in my old C: drive. Thus, my question is: Can I just simply plug my old C: (another 2.5" SATA III drive) to my new system and recover that data without any issue? Or will is cause issues due to this drive having an OS installed as well? I've been trying to look this online but with mixed answers, Thus, I thought I would give it a try here! Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I finished rebuilding my PC on my new motherboard and went to to boot it up. On my old boot drive I have 2 partions 1 is a windows media installation tool and the other is my windows 10 install with a game or 2 and all my desktop files and downloads on it. Before the switch it would load to the boot option screen asking if I wanted to boot to windows 10 or the install tool. After switching everything, it would boot straight to the install media and as far as I can tell booting to windows from it is no longer an option. After some attempts to repair the original install I decided I might as well just install windows to my m.2 NVME drive since I wanted to do that anyway. Installing windows onto an NVME drive is a headache involving unplugging all your other drives and fiddling with some bios options. I used this guide https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/cant-boot-from-m-2-nvme-ssd.3365143/post-20482537 and managed to get it installed using a USB windows install tool and recognized as a boot device. But now instead of a fresh windows setup menu I'm told to reboot and select a proper device. I've tried switching which m.2 slot the ssd is in, every combo of CSM and Secure boot settings and deleting all partions on the m.2 drive and reinstalling windows again and every time I get that proper boot device screen. Not really sure what to do at this point. I have to sleep for work and I'll be attempting to install windows on a HDD make a copy of everything from my sata SSD and reinstalling windows to the old SSD instead but ideally I would be able to boot from the M.2. Hello, I've been searching around the internet and couldn't find conclusive information about this topic. So what I want to understand is this, I'm checking my local electronics stores and it seems that external SSD's are cheaper per MB than internal SSD's. This fact made me wonder, Im currently using an internal HDD, and it's okay I guess, but I want to know will I get an advantage from an external SSD as the main boot drive? Also if i do get an advantage, how are external SSD's different from internal SSD's except the USB connection. I hope im not doing too much with all these questions, but does the USB connection decrease the efficiency of the SSD? Thank you very much! To simplify it: I want to know whether there is an advantage from an external SSD as the main boot drive over HDD. If there is an advantage should I get an external SSD as my boot drive or is it better to spend 1/3 to 1/2 as much on a dedicated internal SSD?

Hi, I already have a 10sec cold boot time with my 1Tb Sabrent Rocket (pcie 3.0) Nvme SSD, and I'm still reading reviews about SSDs and how they work, but so far it seems that for the OS there isn't much difference at all (like maybe 2seconds AT BEST if I get a gen 4.0 nvme drive) while there's much speculation on the future of gaming and direct access to storage. so I was thinking, should I migrate my OS to a smaller Sata SSD like an MX500 of 250/500Gb and use the full 1Tb Nvme (and maybe in the future buy a 2Tb model with a newer controller or a 4.0) for games and applications like Blender/Unity? at the current time I'm splitting the 1Tb drive as 200Gb / 760Gb. 200 for windows and 760 for games, but with Modern Warfare taking 250Gigs, the new title following its steps, and other heavy games that are 90Gigs average... I'm getting kinda full. Will I notice a performance downgrade if I have my OS on a Sata SSD and the games on Nvme pcie? I'm still so confused about lots of things, if you have some great written articles about this stuff I would really appreciate it, Thanks

For some reason I have two system reserved partitions on my system. One of them is on my nvme ssd which I have my OS, windows 10 pro, installed on and the other is on my hard drive. When I go to disk management I can delete/format the one on my ssd but not the one on my hard drive. I found this strange as I assumed that the one on the ssd would the one that I would need to keep considering that is where my OS is installed. Could someone help me with which one I can delete/format and how to go about doing so if there is no option in disk management. Many thanks.

According to a report, Microsoft plans to make PC makers ship solid-state boot drives in all Windows PCs starting in 2023 or 2024, putting an end to the days of spinning hard drives for most of the PCs that still include them. So, I have an old pc with a Pentium chip inside, yeah you heard me right with an actual Intell Pentium from back in 2013. So It was working fine till now, I had shifted it to Ubuntu 20.2 but last week it powered on and i went to Chrome and suddenly it got hanged and then after a mins the screen said no boot drive found, please insert a boot drive and restart and select your boot drive. I opened it up gave the hard disk wires a little wiggle wiggle, plugged them back in, no response so I did it again and it worked and it went till login screen, I left it there and went to do a chore , while it happened again. Don't know what the Problem could be. If anyone can help, it would be very useful for me.

Guys when I tried to install windows 10 with a boot drive on linux mint 20.3 it just spat out some errors.... Any solutions? (PS i don't have dual boot, only linux mint)

Guys uninstalling windows after installing linux with s probably my worst mistake.. and whenever I try to make some free space in my 1 tb hard drive it shows like this.... The windows bootdrive ain't even working properly, whenever I press f12 and select it to boot, it spits some errors and returns to linux bootscreen..
