I've been test driving pop os to see if I want to start using it daily. And I've run into a major problem. Almost all of the windows programs I've tried to get to play within it using wine or playonlinux or lutris don't work. Does anyone know a way as to how to get blu rays to play with menu availability. I tried installing PowerDVD21 essential and it didn't work using playonlinux or lutris.

I'll start off by humbling myself and say: I thought I understood color profiles and bitrates and how they worked with UHD formats such as HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG, but I'm not so sure anymore. So I recently got a 4k UHD tv (Hisense U9DG) which does support all 4 of the HD formats, as well as 4k 4:4:4. I also got a 4k UHD Blu ray player, the UBP-X800M2. I figured it was good enough to do what I wanted it to, but recently I noticed that it's not outputting at 4:4:4 color profile when I'm using Dolby Vision. It doesn't support HDR10+, but I do know I can get it to output 4k 4:4:4 when I'm using HDR10. So in tracking this down with Sony support they said that it doesn't support 4:4:4 at 4k 24Hz when Dolby Vision is on, only RGB color profile. Just out of curiosity, I also asked Panasonic if the DP-UB820-K supported 4k 24Hz 4:4:4 for Dolby Vision and they also said it didn't. They were also not clear about if HDR10+ supports 4:4:4 at 4k. I guess I'm just confused, am I just completely misunderstanding how Dolby Vision works, or is current 4k UHD Blu-Ray player technology just limited? My understanding of 4:4:4 was that it basically meant there was no chroma subsampling. Does Dolby Vision just only support RGB color space and handles chroma subsampling another way? Is Chroma subsampling an inevitability of Dolby Vision? I know Im talking about negligible differences, especially since I'm using a last gen tv at this point, but I just want to improve my understanding.

Hi all, I've been aiming to start making full use of my 4K HDR TV's capabilities, which means investing in 4K HDR Blu Rays rather than streaming films and TV series in 4K HDR. Over recent months I've been planning to pre-order the PS5 disc edition and use it as my Blu Ray player as well as games console (kill two bird with one stone eh?). Do you guys think this is a viable solution for my want of making the most of my TV or do you think I should invest in a standalone 4K Blu Ray player? (Would the *estimated £100 saving between the digital and disc edition PS5 be enough to purchase a worthwhile Blu Ray player?) Any input would be greatly appreciated, Cookie

Hey guys, I was wondering. At the moment 4K blu ray is considered to be the best format (for picture and audio quality at least) at the moment with their 100MB/s bitrate and 4K HDR or dolby vision colours. Though, standard blu ray is also a great alternative if you don't have practically unlimited money. With it's 25MB/s it still surpasses most streaming services. I am, by the way assuming the datarate is measured in MegaBits per second instaid of MegaBytes per second as my sources aren't clear on the specifics and data rates are usually measured in bits. The argument why streaming services compress so much is that the internet speeds of users aren't big enough. I however can get highly stable internet speeds at 200MB/s or a slightly less stable 0.5GB/s. Both connections are copper. And to be honest, in my country it is fairly rare to see people with slower speeds especially because nearly the entire nation is covered under the 4G network that can go over 100MB/s which can be tapped into if the existing cable isn't fast enough. This leads me to wonder if the major steaming services will ever surpass the speeds of the 4k blu ray. As many people claim not to see the difference anyways and it would be way cheaper for the streaming services not to use as much bandwith. What's your take on this?

The primary focus here is on my case and needs for a blu ray reader, so ill save the details on my other components unless someone asks. Im currently in a Corsair 750D (didnt need a case this big but i couldn't find a 450 anywhere at time of purchase) and im looking to upgrade to something more modern that still has at least one 5.25" bay for an internal bluray drive. Im considering the Fractal Define 7 for its mixed functionality and style. Plus, i like that if i get the money down the road its set up very nicely for a custom liquid loop. My only concern is that im looking for a new mid tower to get out of the behemoth full tower ive been in for some time and the Define 7 is literally the same demensions, albeit a few inches sorter from top to bottom. Anybody have ideas i may not have considered? Thanks!

Hey, so I'm interested in getting a new blu ray player for 4K that also had HDR, but I don't need any extra features, just the ability to play back 4K HDR disks in whatever native they are supposed to be at, while also supporting the new sound standards (Dolby Atmos, etc). What good options are there?

So, I am going to buy a 4k monitor. IPS screen 4ms. How do I watch 4k movies? Do I just watch them as I usually would and it will be 4k? On HBO nordic for instance? someone mentioned 4k blu ray? What is that is it ordinary blu ray just with 4k resolution? Can I buy this and connect it to my pc then just insert regular blu ray movies and it will be amazing? https://www.netonnet.se/art/datorkomponenter/cd-dvd-bluray/asus-bw-16d1htblkg/194017.8959/ THANKS

Hi, i might sound like a noob, but, i can't find any free software that can run my blu rays on my laptop. I have VLC, i tried some other free software but it always give me an error that says i don't have the decoding library for blu rays on my computer. I found a forum that stated that if i did add the library to vlc (following instructions, which i did, multiple times, without succeeding) it would work, but no... Tell me that there's still FREE softwares that work. I don't want to buy another thing just to read all my blu rays, already have a ps3 and a ps4 that can do it on my tv. Just looking to have a way for it to work on my laptop, since my 40'' tv, and ps4 don't quite fit in my car. Lenovo Y700, I7 6700HQ, GTX960m, 12gb ram ddr3 (i think) LENOVO Blu ray reader/dvd writer (Hitachi-LG) Windows 10 family. No overclock, no windows tweaks, no modifications whatsoever to the software or hardware, all updated. Thanks you in advance guys and girls.

Putting this in General Discussion because I'm not sure where else to put it I'm trying to rip Blu-Rays from my Blu-Ray collection to a NAS so I can stream it to my Chromecast, etc. However, I'm having trouble with the rips - some discs can be ripped through handbrake no problem at all, but others refuse to be ripped. I used to have AnyDVD HD until SlySoft closed down (in Feb) and I don't trust them give them my cash a second time I tried makeMKV, but it doesn't work on the specific disc either, and it's a 60 day free trial before I have to pay for it Any ways to rip blu rays using freeware or open source software? Tried searching around but I couldn't find much...

Now that Adobe discontinued Encore, what's the best way to create professional DVD and Blu Ray menus? I know it's kind of a dated thing, but it's what many of my clients want. I think Adobe really jumped the gun on this one.

New build working up, I just assumed that Blu ray was plug and play in PCs. I guess it's not? Tell me why not, and the best way to fix it.

Hey, I am going to buy an optical blu-ray drive from someone. I don't have an optical drive port in my pc case (MasterBox Lite 5 RGB) and wanted to use the blu-ray drive externally to rip my personal blu-rays. The power and data connection seem to be a standard 15pin sata connection (see picture). Would I be able to use an adapter (see picture) like this to use the drive externally? Please let me know what I would need to use this optical drive externally (via USB). Thanks!

Hi, I have a Xiaomi Mi Box Android TV (Global version but I live in the US). It has a USB 2.0 type A port and I have a non-smart TV. I was thinking if instead of buying a Blu Ray player, I could just get a USB Blu Ray drive. That would even let me use the drive with my laptop if ever needed. Can I just buy any USB Blu Ray reader from Amazon or do I need to get one with some basic parameters? These are the specs https://www.mi.com/global/mibox. Thanks.

I'm setting up my first home cinema and was looking for a 4K (HDR) Blu-ray capable player, but only have about $150 left in the budget after screen and sound system. Does anyone know what's the best option. On a non-unrelated note... Many reviews criticize players for having a "poor picture", "unnatural colours" or "poor sound", so basically I just wanted to know how the player even effects those things...? But surely the player just spins up the disc, reads it, decodes the data, and sends that on through to the screen etc. (that actually decide what colours or sounds etc to produce based on the signal they receive) a signal that's surely just the information straight from the disc? So what's going on, and is it possible that the player somehow has an effect? And if so, how/why? Thanks for any help or advice.

So I recently bought a Oppo 203 4K blu ray player and I am extremely happy with my purchase, since I bought it because people claimed it could activate Dolby Vision through usb, as long as the whole 4K bluray disc, was copied to a hard drive, which turned out to be true, so Yay! But, what I can't figure is why is that only Oppo has managed to pull that off? If they can then why can't others do it? Oppo has stopped manufacturing blu ray players, so as soon as those that are on the marked is sold that's it, no more blu ray or 4K blu ray players from them.

Since streamed video quality doesn't seem to be that good and TV shows get Blu ray release few months after the entire season is finished, where do people find higher quality TV shows? Is there some place where episodes can be bought separately and downloaded in Blu ray quality (like Steam but for Blu ray content)?

Original Article form Engadget: Oppo's first Ultra HD Blu-ray player is coming later this year Why Important: More competition and more producers making UHD Blu-Ray players. And because Linus can get it for his big 4K TV to watch with his cats. And everyone likes cats.

Hi, Just got a brand new hdd to contain my movie collection and just wondering is their a way in Handbrake to just convert m2ts to mp4 without changing any of the original file quality ( Like Audio and Video bitrates) and only changing the file type. Because I want to get the full quality from my blu ray disc. I mainly use Anydvd for older movies and Makemkv for newer titles. Anyways or methods to change the file type without compressing the movie would be most appreciated. Cheers.

Hi, I recently built an HTPC and installed a trial version of windvd pro 11. I'm playing hunchback of notre damn and my receiver can detect the DTS-HD MA track and I can hear the audio from it. However, within a few minutes, my receiver immediately cuts the audio for a second and displays "DIAL NORM +4" and this happens at random times. I've so far tried switching cables and inputs but that isn't working. I'm hoping this is related to my PC as I no longer have warranty on my receiver. I've also updated my receiver to the latest firmware and am still having this issue. Please help me ASAP as I want to watch a blu ray movie hopefully within the next few hours. Thank You, 4321Rocket

Hey Everyone, I recently purchased the Acer X34 Predator. It's a beast. It's beautiful. It's blinding. It's beautiful. Love it. My only issue is, because I am new to the 21:9 aspect ratio and watching movies on my PC in general, I'm having trouble finding content to take advantage of my new display. Netflix has widescreen support app that works okay, it loses a lot of resolution while streaming movies, but that makes sense as it's a streaming service. What I want to know is where can I start to build up a movie library (legally of course) that will allow me to playback movies that support this new giant 3440x1440 monitor? Do I get blu rays? Do I invest in a playback software? I have a baller monitor now how the hell do I use it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks everyone!
