I have an iPhone and an Apple Watch and my friend has an Android phone with a built-in step counter. We’re looking for a step counter app that allows us to see each others daily step counts to motivate each other. Preferably the app is free and pulls data from my Apple Watch/Apple Health-app automatically, so I don’t have to open the app multiple times per day for it to sync. Any suggestions?
-
is there a way to make apple health to sync data from google fit? I was able to get google fit to sync with apple health app but not the other way around. I use the apple health app primarily since I have a apple watch, but I can only use the google fit app with my schwinn 810 treadmill. I can't get the apple health app to connect to the treadmill and my watch won't count the steps since my hands are on the rails.

I own a Fitbit, but am considering an Apple Watch Series 7 because of Fitbit’s problem with bugs and their tendency to hide more and more features behind a paywall (subscription). Fitbit has amazing automatic sleep tracking, which is great since I have very varying sleep routines, but what about the Apple Watch? Can anyone that with experience of the Apple Watch explain: If it has any automatic sleep tracking at all, or is it strictly tied to the manual schedule that you specify? Is it good for anyone with very varying sleep routines? How’s the quality of the sleep tracking? Are you forced to use the “Sleep” focus mode in order for it to register your sleep?

Apple Watch - Spotify offline with Bluetooth headphones
creat0r posted a topic in Phones and Tablets
Here in Sweden, my mobile operator doesn’t support eSIM. Because of this I only bought the non-cellular version of the Apple Watch Series 7. If I want to go running without my phone, can I download songs from Spotify offline on the Apple Watch and listen via Bluetooth headphones?- 2 replies

I’ve been a Fitbit user for a couple of years, but I’m very tired of the insane amount of bugs on the watch itself. Since I’m an iPhone user I’m considering the Apple Watch 7. On Fitbit there’s a lot of features in the app that require that you pay a subscription fee, is there any features in the Apple Watch-/Health-app that requires a subscription fee?

Summary It turns out people with Apple Watches or Fitbit watches are more prone to visit the doctor due to the notifications these watches have about irregular heartbeats. A study found that individuals with atrial fibrillation using smartwatches with these sorts of features were able to gather more data about their condition and were more sensitive to using more health care resources than those who did not have smartwatches. Interestingly enough, at least the Apple Watch is FDA approved only to those WITHOUT existing heart problems, but this didn't stop people from using the data provided to help cardiologists diagnose the status of an existing heart condition of a patient. Quotes My thoughts It's really cool to see that smartwatches which are seen as more of a gimmick by some can actually be used to benefit one's health and help with providing data about heart problems that could help individuals seek help in a timely manner. The chances are that some of the people who got these watches would've never gone to the doctor without being notified about an irregular heartbeat, and maybe this will motivate companies more to create devices that give as accurate health information to customers as possible. I personally would see such a thing as a major selling point for smartwatches, and a very welcome one at that. I’m not a fanboy of any company, but it’s fair to say I like most of the stuff Apple makes. I have bought several generations of IPhones, Apple Watches, AirPods and MacBooks. Not because they have Apple logos on, but because I think they’re great products. I also really like that Apple seem to respect my privacy more than other tech companies. So, it’s fair to say I am all in on their ecosystem and have given them a lot of my money. Now, I forgive Apple for a lot of the annoying things they do but today I’ve encountered something so unnecessarily anti consumer it’s ridiculous. With gyms closed in my area at the moment due to Covid, I’ve been really looking forward to Apple Fitness + launching. I thought that the Apple Watch integration would make it a step above competing workout apps. So, after buying the subscription I cleared a space in front of my TV and got ready for my workout. Except there was a problem, my Samsung Smart TV didn’t show up in the Airplay list like it normally does. I restarted both devices, checked that Airplay was working in other apps and tried again, but nothing. Thinking it was a bug, I contacted Apple support. It turns out that the workout videos don’t work with Airplay, and you can only stream them to an Apple TV. What a joke. There is no technical reason for this. My TV supports Airplay 2 and even has an Apple TV app installed on it. I can even Airplay the workout preview videos to the TV but not the workouts themselves. I checked the internet for a potential workaround and it turns out that even with iPad screen mirroring using a HDMI cable, the workout videos won’t display. This is a service I have paid for! Sure, I can still watch it on my iPhone screen but that really isn’t the same. I have no need of an Apple TV, it doesn’t do anything my smart TV doesn’t already do. It’s just Apple being Apple and making everything outside their ecosystem incompatible for no reason. Anyway, rant over. Can anyone on here think of a workaround that would allow me to stream the videos to my TV?

So I can't install any apps from my phone to my Apple Watch Series 3 (yes I know I should have waited like a month and gotten the SE). When I tap install on the app from the list in the Watch app it spins for about a quarter of a second then just goes right back to the install button. I'm running latest Watch OS and iOS. Help?! So I've noticed that Linus and a lot of other Youtubers seem to use the Apple Watch as their main smartwatch. I had the original Apple Watch back when I had my iPhone 6S, and absolutely loved it. I got a Samsung Galaxy S8 after that, and loved the phone and Android experience. I now have a Samsung Note 10+, in my opinion the best looking phone of its generation, and I love it and don't want to change. I pair it with the Fossil Q (WearOS) smartwatch, and whilst I like it enough to use it, I don't love it as I did the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch is definitely the biggest thing that I miss about having an Apple phone. My question is: Just how limited is Apple Watch functionality if you're not paired with an iPhone, and why do Linus/other tech reviewers use Apple Watch when they daily drive Android phones? I'm almost tempted to go iPhone 12 Pro Max at this point, but I know I'll regret getting rid of the Note 10+. Cheers Rhys

Can an iPod touch have its guts ripped out and replaced with an Apple Watches? I have seen the video's of Linus "jerry rigging" a Steam Deck. I would like to know if you are capable of combining an Apple Watch and an iPod. The screen, battery and chassis of the iPod with the internals of an Apple Watch. This would make for a large screen Apple Watch with a long battery life. If that's not possible, can you figure out how to place Apple Watch iOS on an iPod? I have seen a simulation, but imagine being the first to combine the two.

I’ve had my Apple Watch series 3 for two years now, and recently upgraded my iPhone 5s to an iPhone 11. Ever since then my Apple Watch has been randomly re-syncing. It pops up to put in my Apple ID and then it goes to the same screen that it shows for updates and on my iPhone it says syncing Apple Watch with iPhone. Once it’s finished it pops up on my iPhone “Welcome to Apple Watch” but none of my settings or anything have changed. Is anyone else having this problem or is this just a me issue? I never had this problem with my old phone but I was running watchOS 5 and iOS 12 before, but now that I have iOS 13 and watchOS 6 I have this problem. Anyone have a clue as to why it’s doing this?

Anyways, i have an apple watch and I love it, best smartwatch/fitness tracker ive ever had, but not compatable with android. Anyone have any suggestions for a smartwatch for android, So far the only one that would work for me in the garmin vivoactive 3. Many watches dont work for me as i have very small wrists. I have the 38mm apple watch, anyone have any suggestions, it needs to have a relatively accurate HR sensor as well as i must be able to swim with it (just in the pool)

@LinusTechshould make a review of the Apple Watch S3 with LTE. I know Linus has been using the original apple watch since its release and i would love to see a comparison between the S0 and S3. The apple watch S3 is probably the most substantial upgrade since the original. Please make our dreams come true by making a review!

A new apple event is scheduled for Oct. 30th 2018. This comes after apple faced some negative publicity for the lack of products in their September event, and also after many leaks for a new iPad Pro with iPhone-like FaceID for a full screen experience. The leaks also show potential for a USB Type-C connector, which would be the first time apple has placed USB C on anything but a computer. Other potential products include a second generation of airpods, the airpower wireless charger, a new mac pro, mac mini, and a successor to the macbook air. The Verge reported the potential software releases as well: "On the software side, Apple is likely to share release details for iOS 12.1 (which features Group FaceTime and dual-SIM support) and the upcoming watchOS update that will enable the Series 4’s EKG functionality." The event will reportedly take place in Brooklyn, NY. The only reason that I can think of why she would look up and down several times when checking the time on her apple watch is maybe the gesture to turn the watch on is buggy which does happen. Otherwise, she is probably reading a notification or something like that. And the officer testimony didn't say she is touching the watch so I'm going to assume that she wasn't interacting with the watch that way. I'm not sure if I agree that this is distracted driving since they are stopped so it's not putting anyone in danger. https://9to5mac.com/2018/06/03/apple-watch-districted-driving/

Hello iPhone and Android users, I have a iPhone 5s with a Jailbreak on ios 11.1.2 and I just bought a Apple Watch 3 (GPS + Cellular) and I can't pair it with my iPhone 5s because it is to old for the 3rd gen apple watch, so is there a work around with or without Jailbreaking other than buying a new iphone I like my 5s and can't buy a new one. Thanks for your help

I'm currently debating whether or not to get a smart watch, specifically an Apple one, as I am an iPhone user. I'm aware of the basic features such as receiving notifications, health monitoring, GPS, etc but my phone can do all of these things regardless. Does anyone that owns a smart watch (not just the Apple variety) find that it has significantly improved your productivity by saving you precious seconds normally spent pulling your phone out of your pocket? I know I sound like I've made up my mind but I'm mainly curious about a largely enthusiast community's opinion on watches. And are there any cheaper options that get the job done that interface well with iOS?

fitness Apple's GymKit is coming to a treadmill near you
captain_to_fire posted a topic in Tech News
Source: CNET and Tech Crunch But how will it work will resistance training? As someone who does both cardio and resistance, will GymKit be implemented as well to resistance training equipment like a tricep pulldown? As of now, I'm not particularly sold just yet by smartwatches and fitness trackers because the way they calculate calories burned is not personalized. I'd rather see the likes of Apple or even Garmin implement a portable bioelectrical impedance to measure body fat percentage since doing it with BMI is inaccurate. It's nice that the Apple Watch will be paired with the treadmill with NFC+Bluetooth but is this going to be an exclusive thing for the Apple Watch? What about Android Wear or better yet, dedicated fitness trackers like the Fitbit Ionic? My problem with fitness trackers is that they don't measure resistance training well. They are good for cardio like hiking, running, walking and swimming but doing a bench press, deadlift or just simple bicep curls? No. Unfortunately, there is no way to scale down lab equipment that actually measures the amount of Carbon Dioxide exhaled and the Oxygen inhaled which is the best way to measure calories burned which is basically stoichiometry and limiting/excess reactants. The human body takes in carbohydrates (sometimes proteins during starvation) and cells in the body require oxygen to burn them. -
Source: 9to5 Mac I don't think this is the first time that something like this happened. Just look at the video below where a man trapped in his hotel in Haiti used a first aid app on his iPhone to prevent himself slipping to shock. One should remember that Apple has been working with Stanford University to fine tune their Health Kit API and heart rate detection of the Apple Watch using Heart Study which is voluntary. I can see a future where doctors will be prescribing smartwatches with a scenario something like this : Patient: Hey doc, I have trouble breathing and I get tired easily. I think I have hypertension. Doctor: What made you think that you have hypertension? Patient: Both my parents have it and my previous doctor told me that my X-ray shows cardiomegaly Doctor: Well as a cardiologist I find many of radiologist's findings inconclusive including this one as I look in your chest X-ray. That's why I'm requesting a 2D Echo with Doppler study just to be sure. Can I look into your labs? Patient: Yes doctor here it is. Doctor: Well sir, it's good that your fasting blood sugar levels are at the normal range and I recommend you keeping it that way but your LDL, triglycerides are over the top. I'd be prescribing you Lipitor for your cholesterol, Fenofibrate for your triglycerides, Norvasc to manage blood pressure and lastly an Apple Watch. Patient: Excuse me? Did you just say you're prescribing an Apple Watch? Doctor: Yes. Stop using that Android Wear smartwatch and start using the Apple Watch and participate in the Heart Study app to monitor the fluctuations in your heart rate. Patient: But my insurance doesn't cover a smartwatch. Doctor: There's nothing that I can do then. Take these medications as directed instead. Then later the patient went to the ATM and withdrew money to buy a new iPhone and a new Apple Watch Sport series 3 but he ran out of money for his maintenance medicines. It's good that the man is now okay and that the Apple Watch helped him save his life which as the time I'm reading the article, it made me think should my parents use an Apple Watch? Both of my parents have hypertension but both of them have it under control thanks to medications. There are so many medical IoT devices that can connect to the iPhone like smart weighing scales with built in bioelectrical impedance for fat percentage measurement, smart sphygmomanometer, and a smart glucose meter for Types 1 & 2 diabetics. I hope Apple and their Health Kit partners develop a smart spirometer for asthmatics including me although unlike hypertension which can be quiet, asthma attacks are more obvious like the hoarseness in breathing alone is a sign that your airways are filling with mucus and is constricting so better keep that inhaler handy. As always, when you feel something is wrong with you, go ask your doctor and if you happen to have a smartwatch that tells something is wrong, ask them to run tests to corroborate the result and in this scenario, the Apple Watch has been accurate in predicting a heart attack and it was averted. Now when will Android Wear follow?

My name is Chase B on The Linus Tech Tips Forum and today I am reviewing the Apple Watch. I have been using the Apple Watch 38mm Sport Edition (A1553) for four months and this is my long term review. So let’s start with a what an Apple Watch is? An Apple Watch is a pricey premium timepiece with “smart” abilities. Apple focus on 4 core concepts to make the ultimate timepiece, Personalization, Health, Fitness, and Notifications. I will be looking at each one of these catagories piece by piece. Before we start with any of that let's talk about comfort, the Operating System, and the build of the Apple Watch. Let’s first talk about comfort. I have the Apple Watch Sport Edition with a sports band. According to Apple, this is a “Custom high-performance fluoroelastomer with pin-and-tuck closure”. The comfort of the fluoroelastomer is pretty nice. This band retails for $50 by itself and I find it pretty comfortable. Over the months, I have never noticed any wear on the band. I have noticed however my oils and my sweat kinda stained my black band, however a good wash with 99% isopropyl alcohol and dish soap get's all of that off. The other issue I have with this band is the “pin-and-tuck closure”. It is horrible. I have to set my watch on its face and like do this weird thing just to get the watch on. Over time my watch has received scratches on its face because of this. Due to just that reason, I find it really hard to tell people to buy this band by itself. In a couple weeks I will be getting Apple's New Nylon Band. If ya’ll want me to review that, please let me know. The OS or Operating System is fan freaking tastic. It’s the coolest environment of any smart watch I have used. I have played with Android Wear and I have used for years the Pebble Original and out of both of those, the Apple Watch kicks ass. The OS is just snappy and quick to navigate. It is really easy to use and just like an iPhone, anyone can learn the OS in minutes. Siri is also in the OS and it kicks ass on the watch too. I do wish siri would talk through the built in speaker but that can be fixed in a software update. I do however have some complaints. The first and probably biggest one is no third party watch faces. While I see why Apple did this, I wish they did not. I currently use the modular watch face and I have all the information I want but I wish I can reposition things. The other problem I have with it is that it can be laggy at some point. When I am doing a high intensity things like working out or listing to music, it can lag of which, while bad, only happened a couple times and I got used to it. Next I am going to talk about the build quality. These are my thoughts based on the Sport Edition version of the Apple Watch. The Sport Edition has 7000 series aluminum and an i-onix display. The aluminum is strong and does not easy scratch. The display however is horrible. It scratches so easily and just like my iPhone, in the sun it justs looks like a rainbow on my screen. The actual display is awesome. It is a AMOLED display and it is Apple’s first attempt at OLED displays. It is freaking beautiful compared to anything I have tried. The Apple Watch is also supporting an Apple S1 Processor of which is A5 equivalent. It is freaking fast and my watch has never overheated. It is really a nice device. It also supports a Taptic Engine and let me say, holy crap it is nice. It is hard to say but when I get a notification it feels like someone is taping me. Nobody hears when I get a notification and I feel it every time. It is the best vibrate motor I have ever used. Hey Apple put this in all of your products. On Apple’s website, there are four core selling points, Notifications, Personalization, Health, and Fitness. Let's talk about notifications. When you get a notification, a full color message pops on to the screen. You can see what app it is and what it says. It is so personal to you. You can click on the title and it takes you to the app and you can read more. The Apple Watch also lets you reply of which in my opinion is a huge feature. It is so nice. The only problem with it is the quick reply. I never use these as none of them apply to me. They just don’t make sense to send to people my age. Thankfully the Apple Watch has a built in microphone and you send text replies via siri. The big reason why I bought an Apple Watch is because of fashion and all of the options. There are two sizes, four editions, seven bands, fifty-five colors, and a nice price tag to go along. They range in prices of $299 to $17000. Unlike the completion, there truly is an option for everyone. I also like most of Apple’s bands. While on the pricey side in my opinion, the quality is on par compared to the 3rd party bands and other smartwatch bands. The Health and Fitness, in my opinion, goto together and don’t deserve to be separate. There is not much to say about the Health side of things. The Apple Watch keeps me up to date on my meds and lets me know when I need to take them. It also alerts me if my heart rate gets too high, I have a medical condition and need to stay chill, and much more. The big thing about the apple watch is the fitness tracker. I do workouts every night and I go running/walking often. So why did I buy this over something like a Fitbit? That is a very difficult question to answer. While most people prefer a Fitbit over Apple and some even call Apple out on how horrible the Apple Watch is for fitness, the Apple Watch did everything I needed it to do. Plus I can hook up my Jaybird Headphones to my watch and forget my iPhone at the house, unlike the Fitbit and I can hook up other equipment to my Apple Watch to better watch over my fitness. In my opinion it serves as a decent fitness tracker for the average person. If you run twenty six miles and are a football athlete, than this is not for you but if you occasionally run like I do and only need to know your heart rate sometimes, than this is a great fitness tracker. The other cool thing about the fitness in the Apple Watch is it reminds you to stand and exercise by making you hit goals. The only problem I have with it is when I am in class and it starts screaming at me to get up and move. The Apple Watch is a really expensive toy. Yes it gets your notification and yes it is a fitness tracker but at the end of the day, it is Apple’s new toy. I had a Pebble Original for many years before my Apple Watch and it served me well. It got my notifications and with runkeeper on it, I was able to exercise with it. So who is the Apple Watch for? It is for that special someone who needs a fancy device to look at for hours upon the day. It is also for those men who want to show how big their package is and have people look at them as the say I just bought a $1500 watch that hooks up to my phone, Yepi. So why do I still wear it? Well mainly because I bought it and I do like it. I like what it does for me however I don’t need it, I just wanted it. If you are an Apple Fanboy who has to have the new thing on the block, than you won’t be disappointed. However if you are looking for a watch and don’t care about your phone, than go buy a Rolex or something.
