  1. Hi all, I am looking to build a new server. My current one is linked in my signature. I am upgrading mainly because I would like more memory and expansion. Here is the build I have come up with: Motherboard: Asus P10S-E/4L CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240L v5 2.1 GHz quad core 8MB cache /w hyperthreading RAM: 2x Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-2133 ECC UDIMM CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9x65 Case Fans: 3x Noctua NF-A14 140mm 3pin Case: Fractal Design R5 PSU: Fractal Design Edison M 450W I will be reusing my LSI 2008 reflashed HBA, 8x 4TB WD Reds and 2x Intel DC 120GB SSDs from my current server for storage. I will be using FreeNAS OS with some virtualized Linux machines plus Windows 10 machine for torrent seed box. I would like to get some feedback (good or bad) on my proposed build from the community Cheers, Alex
  2. Ok so I bought a supermicro X9DAX-7TF motherboard with an LSI 2208 RAID controller on it. Now when I boot into ESXi I can't see any drives connected to the backplane via the mini-SAS cables. If I connect a drive directly to my a SATA port I can immediately see it. What is wrong here? I've read things about needing to put it in IT mode (but not being possible) or making JBODs of all the drives individually but that way I couldn't use FreeNAS anymore. BTW, I want to use ESXi and run FreeNAS on it to take care of everything storage related.
  3. I'm going to be configuring my newly bought server shortly and I've got one big question: Should I make datastores in ESXi and assign them to freeNAS to use or could I just pass through all the drives?
  4. I'm doing something similar to linus's 2 gamers 1 tower setup and I need a motherboard that supports virtualization for this. I have a skylake i5 6500, and 16 gb ddr4. I would prefer it to cost under $100 but it's open for a little wiggle room.
  5. Hello everyone I am looking at creating a home server. Right now i have a old hp ml350 g5. I don't keep this on all day because it idles around 200 watt. My plans are to run 4 vm's in esxi. So i would need around 16-32gb of ram and a decent cpu. The only problem is that i want expandability and low power. I'd like to keep it under 50 watt. I've looked at the intel nuc but the problem is that there is not a lot of expandability. I have a budget of €500.Could anyone give me some advise?
  6. Hello, the LTT community! So I have my server and it was sitting at around 3GB when I did the data transfer, however now my httpd process (apache) will not start and when I logged into VMware I found that all 100GB of storage was used! Is this a hardware (ie: my drives are failing (although if it was this, I would have seen an error from iDRAC), the drives are overlapping data and a reboot can solve it, etc.) or is this software (ie: virus, DDoS, etc.) My host provider kicked me off the network due to strange amounts of usage from my account, so I am wondering how long this has been going on. Please help. I leave for Norway in two days and NEED this server operational. Sincerely, Joseph
  7. Me and my brother want to have a gaming pc. We already have the necessary periferals. Between both we have 1650 dolars. We want to virtualize 1 pc to save money. This is the list of components: -I7 6700k -32gb ddr4 corsair 3000mhz -EVGA 850w psu semimodular -Gigabyte g1 z170 matx motherboard -2x 480gb PNY SSD -Corsair hydro h80i -4x corsair sp120 -Bit fenix spectre 230mm fan -bitfenix prodigy m case -2x RX 480 8GB model (hope they come up at about 230 dolars each) I want to know if it would work. We’ are planning to play on a 1080p ultra wide monitor each at high textures. Im especially worried about the 6700k cpu because i believe it probably wont be enough … then which cpu is the cheapest that could support my needs. Should i save more for a better cpu?
  8. While watching Linus' Gaming PC and NAS in one tower video today I got to thinking about how I could build a similar setup. What I am really wanting is Unraid to power my plex sever (which it can do using docker) with what would be 3 or 4 4TB drives in a RAID 5 while the OS is running in a RAID 0 on 2 Samsung 850 EVO's. In the video he uses 2 1TB SSD's for the cache, but what can be stored on the cache? That is just for data that is going to be written to the array correct? I want SSD performance out of my OS but if the OS cannot sit on the cache would I need a completely separate array of SSD's just to handle the OS? I'm relatively new to the VM world so any help is appreciated.
  9. Hi, I'm new around this forum but I follow Linus Youtube channel from quite some time now. First, excuse me if this is not the right place to ask this. If it isn't, please let me know. I have this rig: CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (Conroe-2M, B2) 1866 MHz (7.00x266.7) @ 1863 MHz (7.00x266.2) Motherboard: Intel D975XBX Chipset: Intel 975X (Glenwood-DG) + ICH7DH Memory: 4096 MBytes @ 399 MHz, 6-6-6-18 - 2048 MB PC6400 DDR2-SDRAM - Kingston - 2048 MB PC6400 DDR2-SDRAM - Kingston Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE, 128 MB DDR2 SDRAM It's quite old now but I think it's still a decent machine for handling server tasks. It has Windows Server 2003 (Yeah I know, please don't beat me. I wasn't the one managing it until now. I added this because it still runs an old version of a accounting software that I need to stay as it is.) So, finally my question: can I setup virtualization on this machine having at least the current windows image running and a linux server distro? If you think yes, please guide me into some options because I'm in a dark place when it comes to virtualization (despite being a Software engineer) and, if it not asking a lot, upgrade ideas to give a refresh on this old machine? Thank! Rui Freitas.
  10. Hi LTT Fourms i am new here i was wonding if you have any idel why i have slow guest install on my home lab if you need any more infomation just ask Thanks Noobkilervip
  11. So here is the Deal, I am living with together with my two best mates and we are all gamers, lately Dark Souls 3 has come out and I was the only one who could affort a new rig and actually play it. So what my roommates nowadays do when I am not around is streaming the game from my pc(via steam) and it is running fantastic. The problem is that, when I actually want to inhabit my funtime space ,they have to stop playing the gaimz. Lately I stumbled across the 7 gaymers 1 cpu video and I was wondering if MAYBE we (actually I ,because the others are quiet the ...) could consider something alike. We have a spare room and it seems to be the perfect space for a nice dedicated gaming-slave pc with a VM for all of us, GREAT RIGHT? Well since we are all connected trough our network we could all access the VM's and stream a game from it to our rooms,if I am not mistaken? SO what Hardware do you guys suggest for this Project, will it even be possible, would it maybe be cheaper if my mates just buy themselves a new rig ? Try to suggest with Performance-per-Gold in mind! I am very ,very excited about what you guys think about this CRAZY (xd) idea! P.S.: We do not need Highend Gaming Experience ,most titles we play a lot are games like; DayZ,Dark Souls 1-3, Diablo 3,WoW, Starcraft, CS-GO (also 1.6) and older emulated titles from japan and a lot of 2d stuff, but we are all looking forward to star citizen (xddd)
  12. So i'm going to build a server for around €700 and need some help with the parts. I was planning to install VMware vSphere on it to be able to use multiple vm's. I mainly want to use it as a multiplayer processing server for several games, i also want it to act like a file server so that i could access the files over the network. Any ideas for a reasonable build?
  13. I'm currently using a 4790K OC'd to 4.7Ghz in my main rig currently and I want to setup a computer that can have a host and 2 VMs while still having close performance of the 4790K for each VM, what CPU would be best for this type of system (if any)? Go with an i7 Extreme like the 5960X or 5930K? Or go with a Xeon? Also, if I need a Xeon, would it be better to go with a mobo that has X79 or X99 chipsets vs. going with a mobo that utilizes C602 or C612? And before I forget to ask, can you utilize SLI or Crossfire for a single VM or can you only have one GPU per VM? If possible, I would like to have 4 GPUs: one for host, one for first VM and two in SLI for second VM. Is this possible? Disclaimer: This is based off of Linus' 1 PC/2 VM gaming build video on Youtube. So, in theory, this is to reduce the number of overall physical PCs in the office, to reduce power consumption from multiple devices, to game @ 4K UHD for one of the VMs, and to do editing as a hobby. I'm planning on having a separate media server on the LAN, so no need for to worry about that. This is more of "because I can do it", not because I necessarily need it. Plus, I want to learn more about VMs and Linux and what not. I'm assuming I would need to use Linux as the host.
  14. Hello, after spending hours looking for the solution online, I've come here to get some ideas. Basically I don't have any experience with virtualization, so I mostly need someone to point me in the right direction and to give me the "Dos and dont's" on the subject. I'd like to turn my desktop PC in two stations: 1st station - Gaming/Work station 2nd station - Media center/NAS I'd like both to have a separate set of inputs (keyboard, mouse, optionally network) and dedicated outputs (video, audio, can do both via HDMI). By dedicated outputs I mean every station using the exact output. If possible, I'd like both to be able to access the internal and external storage disks. Gaming/Work station would run windows (7 or 10) and Media center/NAS would run Ubuntu (or some other Linux distro). Now, before you point me to Linus' multistation build/tutorial videos, let me note that I've seen and considered using Unraid, but I'd still like to explore my options and have someone say "Unraid is the way to go" or "Unraid is just not going to cut it for you". I tried the simplest approach - using VirtualBox - but I didn't see this kind of virtualization come anywhere close to what I want. My current rig specs are: Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 CPU: Intel i7-4790K RAM: 16GB (2x 8GB DDR3) Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX750 Ti Disks 240GB SSD (sata3; main OS) 120GB SSD (sata3; used to be Ubuntu, now meant for the Media center/NAS) 4 internal storage disks (sata3) 4 external storage disks (2x USB2.0, 2x USB3.0) OS: 64-bit Windows 7 Hardware upgrades are acceptable. Questions are: Can I even make this work? Would I need two graphics cards in order to truly separate and dedicate the outputs? Could this be done by Media center/NAS station using onboard graphics? Would Unraid be suitable for this? What are the alternatives or more suitable solutions? Would it make more sense to just build another PC for Media center/Nas? Any kind of thoughts, suggestions and pointers are welcome and appreciated
  15. I was talking to my brother about upgrading my computer again and than we started talking about the fact that my computer is never acually fully utilized, as it sits in the corner for most of the day not being used at all or just under light usage, and it would be cool to have my pc as some kind of a server on which he could connect and use it when I don't. And I'm not looking for Steam's in-home streaming.... we have already tried that and it's not good enough. 1# when you stream to another pc you can't use the "server" 2# you can't connect wheels and things like that to use with streaming (and that is just what we need as my brother only playes racing sims and if we ever buy a racing seat and a projector I'm going to hook up my HOTAS too.) Sooo... what am I looking for ? : 1# some kind of program that will allow me streaming (at least games, if not a full VM) 2# preferably all you need to connect to the server side is an ethernet cable (I don't want to run multiple cables like hdmi and usb and so on, because the distance is greater than 10 meters and we are not on the same floor) 3# I'm looking for the easiest way to set this up (expecting it's not easy at all ) 4# the client side should be a low performance PC so that there is not much extra cost to building the server 5# I may add more of these ^ when I think of them I've looked at unRAID that Linus has used for their Virutalized gaming machines, but i'm not sure if it's capable of this kind of thing. Has anybody had any experiance with it ? Has anyone tried to do something like this before ? how did you do it ? Thank you for your help and I really hope I posted this in the right forum section
  16. Since I am limited on space I wanted to know if I can run a NAS, firewall and router in one ATX chasis (the NZXT Source 210 Elite). I know that the onboard NIC on my motherboard will be used for unRaid, I will also add the Supermicro AOC-SGP-I4 for unRaid do use for link aggregation for faster write speeds. On the pfSense side of things, I will use the Intel I340-T4 or the StarTech ST1000SPEX42. I know that I will have to assign that nic and a USB card to the pfSense VM. A contender for the USB card is currently this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815158354&cm_re=pci_e_usb_card-_-15-158-354-_-Product Also, the on board graphics will be given to unRaid so I am including a cheap video card as the video device for pfSense which i will also have to assign to the VM. In the end, the rig should look something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Fq6Ypg The price is high however there is convenience in the fact that it is an all in one solution. Is the CPU and amount of ram a good decision. I am currently desperate for answers so can someone please help. PS: how can I lower the total cost?
  17. I am planning to copy "2gamers1cpu" but since im on a budget I decided to do it with an APU for budget and low power. The goal here is to play League of Legends at decent settings (All High in 1080p @ 60fps) with my brother at low power consumption. I very much appreciate your help guys. 18. This a build I've been toying around with in my brain for a bit, and want to hear what other people think / would do with it. embedded celeron N3150 mobo (or similar) ram... some hdd's... a case... (cm Elite 110?) and this neat little power supply.
  19. Long story short, my BIOS GUI is not functioning and I can't change any of my settings on the BIOS. I've tried everything to fix this. Anyway, I was wondering if there was a way through the command prompt I could enable Virtualization, or just enable it without going into my BIOS. Thanks. PS: Tell me if I should post this in the Hardware section. Because This could be considered both.
  20. So this is the system I currently have: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/wbLvKZ Certainly a beast of a system, but I'm finding out I actually need some more horsepower. I'm studying Networking and Penetration Testing (Just starting out, any advice would be appreciated). I found out what virtualization was a few months ago and have been playing around with operating systems ever since. I'm starting to get into creating entire virtual networks and I just don't have the core count/ RAM to make the number of VMs I want or have them run as smooth as I'd like. Enter the Xeon E5-2670. I found out about these 8 Core hyperthreading beauties and immediately started planning a new rig. If you don't know, these chips were dumped on the second hand market and go for $55-80 on Amazon and Ebay. I don't just want one, though. At $80 a piece, I want two. So this is my new part list to transform my current rig to a dual Xeon one: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/YnxhM8 All I'm changing is the Motherboard, CPUs, and Ram. What say you, brethen? What would you change and why?
  21. Hello all! I have initially asked about a cut down version of 7 Games 1 CPU Build here. But I want to cut down cost more. It was not more like a gaming machine but rather a machine with multiple users as one can do with thin clients with a little gaming in mind like CS1.6, Age Of Empires, NFS:MW (2005). Then I got the idea that all the games dont require like a whole lot of GPU performance. So now my question is, if I have like 2 GPUs in SLI or crossfire on a Xeon Work Station like DELL T5400, would I be able to use Intel VT for this. Also if your are going to suggest GPUs, keep in mind this is an extreme budget build which is not to exceed 200USD. GPU I have in mind is 8500GT (512MB/128-bit), because i had used it and it was good for most games I played that were not CPU bottle-necked (P4 HT 3.0GHz). Details of the build are below. All in all, this will be more like a ThinClient RDP Server. Please advice on GPUs and possibilities of the above stuff. Regards
  22. Hello, recently I created a list of PCPartPicker for me, the idea is to use virtualization for my parents and we use the computer at the same time without interrupting neither, we use the computer all the time and for different purposes so that's the main reason I use virtualization. I was impressed when Linus made this video of "2 Gamers 1 CPU" so I started working on this list but could not find much information about hardware requirements that have to consider when assembling the PC. So, first question, I do not know if the number of components are needed to run two virtualized computers. I need more GPUs, more HDDs or what else? Now, I thought as my parents do not use the computer to heavy workloads, could give them 2 cores, 4 GB of RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6570, and mine would have 6 cores, 12 GB of RAM and AMD R9 390. This is because I use it a lot for 3D modeling and simulations, but my parents used to Word and Chrome. My second question is, can I use the SSD to install both OS on its corresponding partition, or each OS must be associated with an HDD or SSD physical? Third and final, the WIFI card can be used on both computers at the same time or need to place a second card? Thanks for all, and sorry for my gramatical errors, im not good writing english. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JnJKCJ If you cant see the link here is the info PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JnJKCJ Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JnJKCJ/by_merchant/ CPU: AMD FX-8300 3.3GHz 8-Core Processor ($109.99 @ Newegg) CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Water 3.0 Performer C + LNC 81.3 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($59.65 @ B&H) Motherboard: ASRock 970M PRO3 Micro ATX AM3+/AM3 Motherboard ($51.98 @ Newegg) Memory: Mushkin Stealth 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($73.99 @ Newegg) Storage: A-Data Premier SP550 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($56.99 @ NCIX US) Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 390 8GB Double Dissipation Video Card ($299.99 @ Newegg) Case: Thermaltake Core V21 MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($39.99 @ Newegg) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($59.99 @ Newegg) Wireless Network Adapter: Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I 802.11a/b/g/n/ac PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($29.89 @ OutletPC) Other: Toshiba MK3275GSX SATA 320GB HDD 2.5 5400RPM Laptop (Purchased) Other: AMD Radeon HD 6570 1GB (Purchased) Total: $782.46 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-03-26 22:54 EDT-0400 Other PCPartPicker list for the same purpose: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Laett/saved/T7pfrH
  23. Hello guys. We just bought second machine for our hosting, again i7 5960X becouse we wanted to move on another products (CSGO) 64 + 128 tick servers. Anyway, it was lagging very much, so we OC it on 4ghz but it didn't help that much. Servers were lagging. So I figured out process 've shown 106% usage of CPU but any core wasn't used more than 12%. So we took every server and using commands told the process not to use more than 1 core. It fixed it pretty much, you can now play with 20 BOTs on 128 tick with VAR around 3 - 8 (on 128 tick it must take under 7,8ms to generate frame) so it's OK. But we want to host full 32 slot servers too. Any ideas what more can we do? Intel virtualization is turned on in Linux, and I've read it could take some % from total CPU power if you don't need to virtualize. Every idea is welcome. Sorry for my english - I'm learning it 5 years only and I didn't used translator. Thanks for ideas and tips Regards, Peter
  24. So I'm running Windows Server 2008 on VirtualBox as part of an IT course I'm doing and I've bridged connections between a local domain on the virtual machine and the internet where I'm doing the course and the internet is painfully slow. The first adapter is a NAT and the second adapter is an internal network. I'm trying to load a page and it's frozen halfway during loading. This is relatively new to me so please excuse my lack of knowledge and experience.
  25. Hi, I'd appreciate some advice on a build to replace several machines that form a small business network / development lab. 2 osx machines 1 running OS X Server (DNS, AFP Shares, iTunes sharing, Web Server 3 websites, xCode Server, Owncloud) 1 running plex serving iPads video (24x7) 1 dell 2850 running FreeBSD, own cloud, development Web server (runs 40 hrs / week 1 dell 5100 running freeness (24x7) 1 iMac running OS X and multiple VM's (windows 10 , Ubuntu 14 LAMP stack) (40 hrs week) 1 NZXT H440 with custom build, X99 Deluxe, 5930 i7, 16GB ram (DDR4), evga GTX 980 an SSD and several laptop drives in Raid 0 (Currently Gaming machine) Current total data size is 12 TB, excluding back-ups. My day job i develop for the web using symfony 2 and javascript, php, jquery etc over multiple customer lamp stacks . I also develop for iPhone / iPad using xCode Current problems: the iMAC is a little under powered to run the VM's it has 32GB or ram but the disk is very slow and could use replacing for SSD and not enough Core's to run the VM's at realistic speeds The Dell server disk subsystem is incredibly noisy and low capacity probably at the end of it's life ? No overall consistent easy way to manage all of the different servers when working locally or remotely No way to run continuos integration testing of web development Possible routes forward: 1 - Replace the disk subsystems in the dell and iMac for hi capacity (might not be possible in the Dell 2850) 2 - Build a rack mounted dual Xeon Server with lots of core's and run all current devices on it as VM's 3 - Upgrade the NZXT CPU and hard drive system 4 - Move it all to AWS or some other cloud service Current network backbone is Cisco Switch 26 port 1GB want to get some link Aggregation going XEON Build I'd like to do Dual 26xxV3 CPU's with a boat load of memory (DDR4), PCIE NVMe SSD and a storage array. Need some advice on power supplies and mother board, graphics and cases to use thinking a 4U rack case would work. Ideas advice welcomed
