I was looking for some advice for my current server build. Any help appreciated. PS: I took this template from a reddit forum lol What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using. * I am a machine learning developer looking to build a virtualization server. I need high computational resources on the fly. I am also an occasional gamer, so I want the option to run games. Additionally want to possible run a plex server on this build. * I need to use multiple OS's constantly for what I do, so I want to be able to run many operating systems concurrently. I want to connect to my machine with a monitor and connect externally via the internet with GUI or SSH. What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes? Let's assume that money is not a concern When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy. Let's assume right now. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc) Just the PC components, I am not concerned with the case (fun fact I might be building it into a desk), or peripherals Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location? Canada If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated. Nothing to reuse Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?** Overclocking is a yes Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc) CUDA, and possibly RAID Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components? No case concerns, as I might be building it into a desk Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference? Nope Other Info: Let's assume that money is not a concern, and I am looking to incorporate an 18 core CPU, 64GB ram, and 4 graphics cards maybe P4000s or even RTX 2080s. I want to share the 4 graphics cards between the OS's if that's possible. What's the best value hardware for this scenario, and possible virtualization software setup. Needless to say, I want to minimize video tearing and I/O complications.

Hi! So i've been watching a bunch of linus tech tips, and i watched a video named: "Badass full gaming pc cheaper than a cpu???" In the video there is a chart of game performance based on specs i suppose since he doesen't actually have the suggested build at his hands. My question here is, what program / website is Luke using to see game performance based just on specs, and if he isn't using one just based on specs but actually has the build and is able to test it there, what program could i use? I'm building a PC next month and i'm interested in what it might be able to run theoretically, i know it differs from reality! TL:DR Program / website where u can plot your specs in and see what your build will be able to run, without having the machine physically.

I was wondering where vr technology would be in 10 years time? What areas would you like to see improved? I read this article (Virtual Reality Technology – What Lies Ahead?) where they suggest that in the future it may be possible to 'upload' your brain into a vr world! What does everybody think? Personally I would like to be be able to feel things :-)

Ive been debating wether i should spend the extra money and get the gtx 1070 for my vr gaming rig, or if i should save money and go with the gtx 1060. Im on a tight-ish budget so I want to insure my money is spent well.

Hey guys... I dont know if anyone at LTT reads this, But is there a chance LTT can do a show on Nvidia Grid, in regards to its usage for engineering and video editing (not so much gaming?) I know its catered more to larger multi user environments, but I think its a good window into what small to medium sized business will be able to access in the coming years. is anyone else interested in it? Id like to see what kind of power the M60 card packs and how all the licensing structures works. Thanks! JC

https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4dq00o/what_worked_for_me_extending_pc_vive_30_ft/ Further down in the comments, another redditor had success with an active USB cable: I just thought I'd share this since I know some people would rather have a PC in their office/bedroom while playing the Vive in a more spacious place like their living room. Enjoy.

Hi there So i am sitting here with my old machine and thinking to my self, could it be used to host 2 VMs for small gaming, ergo could i use it to make "2 Gaming Rigs, 1 Tower"? If i could, what program would be best for making the VMs? Anyway the specs on the machine is as followed: Cpu: AMD FX-8350 Octa-Cores 4GHz MB: ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX Gen3 R2.0 RAM: Corsair Dominator 32GB 1600MHz GPU: 2x Club3D HD6970 2GB I got the idea from Linus video and i love the idea and it would be nice to have a pc that could be used by two people (when friends visits) But i am not sure that it would be strong enough to run for exampel CS:GO! Any help response would be great, and thank you guys!

Hi, so basically at the moment i'm testing out a few windows server features such as Active Directory, WDS and MDT. As you may or may not know Active Directory requires the same server to have its own DNS and DHCP. Recently as i have a domain and setup i believe its to do with PXE in deployment bench as seen in the screenshot here (https://gyazo.com/83d8ef9c4f8fd8abdd9f881244d6a6c2). Since if i startup a new machine i want it to just to be able to connect to the network and see PXE without having to approve it etc. So my question is how can i stop other devices on and joining my network e.g my phone being effect by this DHCP? Since when DHCP hands out the info the DNS is set to be the server and not a DNS like 8.8.8.8. Also i was wondering if there was a program that you can run virtual machines but have them all kind of trapped in there own network but have internet access?

So after spending a fair amount of time pondering an upgrade (though I don't need it) and after watching the gaming server builds by Linus I had the idea to build a gaming server on the cheap (Since I already have a motherboard, 2 Xeon CPUs and 24GB ram) and was wondering what (if any) limitations are standing in my way of making this a thing. My current concerns are about the available power for a full sized newer GPU in the case with the other modules I would like to add (I have a raid card and dual 1Gig NIC) and if I could clock up the 2 CPUs to match a gaming rig. (The last one probably isn't going to happen unless it's easy and 'somewhat' safe for the components) Server Components: (http://imgur.com/a/PZXia) Intel Server Board S5520UR Intel Xeon E5520 Intel Dual 1GB NIC (2 available) 8GB ECC Memory (4 x 2GB) DDR3 Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD OCZ Vertex 460 120GB SSD Intel 730 480GB SSD x2 Seagate 2TB x2 ASUS RAIDR 240GB (I don't expect this to work in the server but was wondering if it was supported) Ideally I would like to give this thing the punch of a PC with a powerful single GPU (So I don't need to worry about SLI support) If any pics are needed of the hardware or any questions about what other expansion modules are in the server (Like an added RMM3 module and the included SATA docking bays) let me know.. I'm a man with a camera phone that can pass em along.

Hello, I am planning on building a VR Ready PC. I have picked out the part I would like to use in the build, but I am trying to cut the cost down a bit. I was thinking that I can cut the cost by changing the CPU Cooler, Ram, and Case. I was planning on getting, but I don't know what to get in place of what I have picked out already, and I can't really go from the 8 core CPU to a 4 core CPU because I run Virtualbox/Vmware. I don't really need the power supply, I have one that I can use, and the hard drives, I will remove from the system I have now. I don't really what to get a lower cost CPU, or Motherboard, because they go together like bread and butter and I was raised to never be a cheapskate when it come to a CPU, and motherboard, because by the time you're ready to upgrade your motherboard or CPU, it old and nearly double the cost, then it was a year ago. So can anyone help with reducing my total price tag [PCPartPicker part list](http://pcpartpicker.com/p/RTw6TW) / [Price breakdown by merchant](http://pcpartpicker.com/p/RTw6TW/by_merchant/) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80662i76700k) | $368.18 @ SuperBiiz **CPU Cooler** | [Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rln24m24pkr1) | $147.67 @ NCIX US **Motherboard** | [Asus SABERTOOTH Z170 MARK 1 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-sabertoothz170mark1) | $259.51 @ Amazon **Memory** | [Avexir Core Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/avexir-memory-avd4uz124001608g2co) | $79.11 @ Newegg **Video Card** | [EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-04gp42974kr) | $333.68 @ NCIX US **Case** | [Cooler Master MasterCase Pro 5 ATX Mid Tower Case](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-mcy005pkwn00) | $132.36 @ Amazon **Power Supply** | [EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr) | $90.76 @ NCIX US | *Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts* | | Total (before mail-in rebates) | $1456.27 | Mail-in rebates | -$45.00 | **Total** | **$1411.27** | Generated by [PCPartPicker](http://pcpartpicker.com) 2016-04-04 08:47 EDT-0400 |

VR Here!-VR There! VR everywhere.. Virtual Reality is possibly the most anticipated piece of consumer entertainment technology of this decade. However, I'm still struggling to "see it"..(Non-intentional pun!) I think the idea of VR is exciting from a general entertainment perspective but I just can't imagine us all sitting in a room with box over our faces in the near future.. Maybe I'm just so used to actual displays that I think it seems ridiculous.. So I hand the question to you. Do you think VR will completely take over? Do you think VR has a place in the E-Sports industry? (again, I can't imagine a theater filled with people staring at nothing..) Will VR flop like 3D has?

I've had my ubuntu server for a while and i want to add more machines. I haven't really done anything to my server(except probably decrease the security) so i don't want ubuntu to be it's OS anymore. What's the best virtualization OS(an OS specifically designed for virtualization and nothing else.) I DON't want a host either(i.e, Linux running virtualbox running another linux/any other machine) I think VMware can do it, but that costs money(which I don't have), any alternatives? Perhaps a linux distro designed specifically designed for this? I think I saw Linus do this in his 7-gamers-1-PC video, but it might have been something different (and expensive)

====Posted in Troubleshooting also==== ====Sorry, still trying to figure out this forum==== Hey, My name is Blake. Currently the company I am working for is wanting to move from XenServer to VMware. I have it set up currently in a lab environment to try to make sure exporting from XenServer and importing to VMware is going to work the way I want it too since we are doing the move on Easter weekend. I was able to connect to VSphere just fine the other day and now I'm getting an error stating it's not able to connect do to a timeout issue. I have rebooted both the server and laptop I am working with and they are on the management VLAN I created. Anyone know any thing to fix this? I could also just fresh install the ESXi install.

So I currently use windows 10 on my laptop. I have a programming class next semester and decided I wanted to pop Ubuntu (eventually some other form of linux) onto my laptop. I'd rather not dual boot. I'd rather have access to windows via my linux os. Question is, How do I go about using this OS (with all of its files/features) via the virtual machine on ubuntu? Normally with a virtual machine I'd simply run an ISO to install and i'm good to go. I'm not sure if what I'm asking is even possible, if not I will probably just dual boot. Any help is awesome and appreciated. Thanks

Hey guys, I recently installed on my laptop windows 10. I am a big fan of different virtual desktops, and would really like to have different wallpapers for each, like in OS X. But when I set one, the wallpaper for all virtual desktops are changed. I don't want to use a third party all, but rather in Windows 10 integrated virtual desktops. Is there an option like this? Thanks

A studio by the name of Sólfar secures $2.1M to recreate Everest in stunning detail and scale. Sólfar are teaming up with RVX, Nordic’s leading visual effects and animation house, to deliver the experience to VR headsets next year. I believe experiences like this is where VR really demonstrates its belonging. If done correctly, I could see immersive experiences like this being very successful. Video (not sure why it isn't embedding)

Hey guys Who has experience with VPS'ses that run a distro of Linux (preferred Ubuntu, CentOS or Debian) that has a webpanel where I can host websites. I need to have a PHP server with MYSQL and SFTP. It also should have a mailserver included. I currently use VestaCP wich I find "OK". I've tried Webmin, but I don't really like it and I found an SFTP bug where the user would not be chrooted to their home directories. I kinda want it to be an open source / free web panel. Anybody has any suggestions?

Amazon: NCIX: We all know that running a virtual machine on your hardware has the potential to add some overhead to performance tasks... But can we quantify that overhead?

So i just got a pair of the Sony MDR 1ABT headphones, but i noticed that the headphones didn't have 7.1 surround or at last the virtual variety and as a audio noob i was wondering if i could get some help clearing some things up. I am currently using Logitech G35 headphones and i'm aware that they use a simulated 7.1 surround sound and from what I've read that's probably the beast as (as far as i know) the non-simulated surround sound is just pure snake oil. The thing is that i quite enjoy the and often use surround to locate enemies in games and such (not professionally or anything, still nice tho). I read that you can get 7.1 surround with programs like Razer surround, and that some games even include these drivers by themselves. So i am wondering if there is a lot of tinkering involved in this and if I would have to manually turn on and of Razer surround every time i wanted to play a game that doesn't have its own drivers. Also, in general, what games have their own drivers (CSGO, GTA BF3/4.....). If there is a lot of tinkering then i think that i might just trade the MDR 1ABT headphones for maybe the new G933, as I am looking for more of the plug and play experience incited of having to thinker with each new game i buy. So in that regard I'm also wondering if there would be any noticeable audio quality drop if i for example traded it in for the G933 (Other suggestions for headsets are also welcome). So please enlighten me HI-FI specialists and gamers of the world. (or if you just know something about the topic, I'm not that picky)

Hello! I'm sure this community is either annoyed by my idiot attitude, or they are amused. Be sure to tell me which if you answer the question! Scenario: I'm buying my first server for (hopefully) a long time. It's a Dell PowerEdge R710 with a few caviats: Only comes with 2x148GB 10K SAS drives (Meaning no redundancy unless I wanna pay an arm) Only comes with ONE of the two redundant 870w PSU's Only comes with 8GB RAM (not really a problem, I can upgrade in the future) No drive sleds for the other six drive holes One out of two Xeon's in socket, other blank I'll be using Vmware's Vcloud (free) to partition out two virtual servers out of this one physical server: Webserver using Ubuntu Server with Virtualmin Web Hosting File share/Upload server using Windows 10 to upload videos to YouTube At this time, I also don't have enough money to buy the drives right now, however in a few months after I get my tax returns, I should be able to buy them. Problem: I would like redundancy, however that means buying less expensive 7,200 RPM SATA drives (which is fine). I'd also like to get the second PSU, but see the questions section below for that issue. Questions: For the drives to get optimal speeds, should I use the same Giga/Terabytes in all SATA drives (in the case of wanting to do RAID later on)? Can the hot-swappable PSU's be different voltages? Or will that kill my server? Do I need them ASAP or could I wait? Should I get a second Xeon now, or wait until the price drops more? If I wait will it kill my server? Should I get more RAM now or wait until later? If I wait will it kill my server? Do I need iDRAC? Can the community offer any other advice?
