I have a PC that does not support virtualization. But I want to install a 64-bit guest OS on VirtualBox, it gives me an error. I have also used VMware workstation, Parallels workstation. My host OS is Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit. Please tell me, which virtual software I can use in this situation. This might be a silly question, but I can’t find the answer. I’m pretty familiar with pc hardware, and am wanting to create a home server. My fiancée has a MacBook and I use PCs, so I was wondering if I could create one physical server that runs multiple VMs to accomplish the following tasks: 1. Network time machine 2. Dropbox-like NAS for Mac and PC 3. Networked backup drive for my PCs 4. Media server I know it would have to be a beefier server to run all three of these, but I don’t want to build separate machines. Would it be possible to do this? If so, what software would I need? I have essentially zero experience in the server space and am having a hard time figuring out exactly what I’d need to do after building the thing. Thanks

so I want to hackintosh my PC. But I don't have a mac in order to download the macOS Mojave installer to create a usb boot drive so i can install it. The logical flix is to use a virtual machine, but after 2 months of trying to so it i can't go on any longer. I managed to boot into a macos vm, after about 2 weeks of it not working, for no apparent reason, but it was so slow and buggy that i couldn't physically use it to download the installer. Finder kept crashing, app store wouldn't load, etc. tried different VMs, tried so many things and i can't get it to work. Is there any way i can download an instaler without a mac or a VM? I'm just so fed up of trying and it failing again and again, i thought i'd try and find another way. Any help very much appreciated.

Alright so for background, for LTX my girlfriend wanted to go with me but she doesn't want her own gaming computer because she lives in a dorm and is lame. So i decided that I would sell my mini itx gaming machine and build a micro atx virtualized gaming machine instead. So what I'm rocking right now is a Threadripper 1900x on an Asrock X399m Taichi motherboard with 4 dimms totaling 32 Gb of ram. Where I've been running into problems is with my graphics cards. I have an rtx 2080 and a 4gb rx 480. I have so far been able to get my rx 480 to boot absolutely fine into a virtualized instance of Windows 10 using Limetech's Unraid. Where I run into problems is with Nvidia's usb controller built into their higher end cards for their virtual reality link. It kept throwing up errors at me about it not being able to separate it from the rest of the card even though I would be selecting it to add with the card. I gave up and decided to ask a friend if I could just borrow one of their rx 480's instead for the trip and temporarily trade him my rtx 2080. I have not however tried ACS override in Unraid though because somehow I missed that. I have also heard that you have to add and edited nvidia vbios if you want to use it as your main graphics output for Unraid and that there is some trickery involving making the driver not think it's virtualized. I have also heard that amd cards work fine out of the box for both of these. Since my system is entirely custom liquid cooled except for the rx 480, would it be better to just use the rx 480 as my first gpu and put the 2080 in another slot or will it be the same level of difficulty? Or am I better off just temporarily changing my loop and using two rx 480's instead?

Hi guys. So recently, I wanted to start a new project and work on building my own server for multiple purposes. However, not having much experience I decided to do some research but I couldnt come to any conclusive answers for what I need. So I was wondering if this community could help. Heres the situation: Uses: -Store media such as numerous photos, large videos and possibly some TV shows and movies -Able to host a few programming projects and game servers -Backup my files instead of using cloud storage because of file size limits -Run Plex and other apps in the future Extra Requirements: -Keeping it within a $700 USD budget (although it can be slightly over if its worth the extra money) -Keeping it compact (possibly in Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX) -Possible to connect to router through Wi-Fi due to my router being in the living room and I have to share my living space but dont want people touching my stuff (I would resort to Powerline but the circuitry in my house isnt the best and runs slower than a wireless connection) Basically what I want is to learn more about building a server and the parts I would need to accommodate the above (if possible). I dont know if Im asking for too much or if its feasible with my situation and budget but if so, can anyone recommend me parts, tips or any explanations to what I would need because I still consider myself a novice but I want to learn more. Thanks for your time guys.

Need access to osx but not sure what to do
Morgan.chorlton posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Hi all Im not sure what to do I need access to OSX for my work and I don't want to pay the apple tax for a Mac mini or and I Mac, so I THIS VIDEO from LTT and was wondering if it would be worth doing this I currently have a Windows desktop with decent specs but would ideally like a separate system. I have the current system to build: Link to build I wouldn't really be using the Linux system (possibly use it for a Plex server or web dev server not sure yet) so I dont really need a decent graphics card so not sure what to do. Also is the CPU and ram overboard? Also is there a better way to do it or get access to OSX. Thanks in advance for any help/ comments- 5 replies

I recently watched an ltt video Link to video and I'm trying to build a system to boot osx through a Linux virtual machine. Iam looking to do a Ryzen system maybe a 2700x and was wondering what GPUs to pair with it if anyone had any suggestions. I'm a programmer and will only really be doing X code and swift sort of stuff possibly some web based stuff. Thanks in advance.

When I try to watch YouTube, the sound is a bit behind. My host is a W10 with a R5 3600, a 1070 and 16GB RAM. I gave my VM 8GB and half my cores. VirtualBox and the OS are on the latest version.

I am trying to use an old 35mm film scanner that only works in Windows7. Given the fact that my laptop is running Windows10Pro I decided to take advantage of the built-in virtual machine Hyper-V to create a virtual Windows7 computer. The problem is that I am unable to connect the scanner's cable to the usb hub and get it recognized by de virtual machine. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/learn-more/use-local-resources-on-hyper-v-virtual-machine-with-vmconnect According to microsof's documentation So, how can I get the Windows7 Virtual Machine to run the scanner. I've read that you could use a remote desktop... but I have no idea how to achieve that.

hi guys, i need your help.. what is the best VM software (free or paid) in terms of performance relative to a physical machine. i have tried VM VIRTUALBOX but graphics performance is not good, even dragging windows around will show tearing. its like a graphics driver is not installed or the physical gpu is not utilized.. is there a need to install a driver for the physical gpu inside the virtual machine? i just want to try out virtualization coz i have seen LTT's video on it.. im on windows 7 64 by the way

Basically he is visualizing Windows 10 through Linux with a GPU pass-through and says there is little to no performance impact for Windows gaming. I am kind of sick of Windows software rot and this looks like a really easy way to nuke the windows installation and load up another. Good idea?

Hey Linus and Community! :-D. How are you all doing?, I'm new to the Linus tech tips forum, but I'm a long time follower of Linus's Videos. As stated above is this even feasibly in the realm of possibility????, if it is I would love to see it done(I'm poor so I lack the hardware). But Linus is crazy, I hope he's crazy enough for this, SQUARE UP LINUS.

Hey folks! Newbie to the forums here, but I was having a big think about a friend's love for older Windows XP games he spent many hours on back when he was 12-13 and his dad's LAN Center (We're not even that old we promise) but Battlefield 1942 was one of his favorites and when I was building him his current PC to primarily play the newest borderlands and WoW he brought up getting 1942 to run. I told him I've tried it before but with not a whole lot of luck because of modern hardware. Here's the point of the post. I've been watching a lot of LGR in addition to Linus Tech Tips as I sit and wait for my shift to end on graveyard, and I thought to myself. "Why not just make a system around the same idea for older hardware that we can use to play with some of our other friends! The obvious hurdles to me would be the hardware compatibility. Like would XP be even able to accept a mobo and a CPU that new inside a virtual machine? Even then looking towards GPUs Would it be possible to split the resources of a single GPU? Or to have an array of older hardware that while too weak for today's titles would knock the socks off of anything pre 2010. What do you guys think about this? Any advice as I look into it? be pretty rad to have something like this and throw it inside a Dell Inspiron case or something like that *Edit: Since I would want to get a few friends who have long since moved on from regularly gaming in on this, I don't want to burden them with a PC that would be a single use machine, And I have limited closet space. hence one package

Hi, I use VMware player to run old operating systems to play old games sometimes and I always have to set my host operating system's resolution to something stupid like 800x600 in order to play anything since the default screen is so small, but this doesn't work if I want to watch videos or something in another window at the same time. Is there a way to stretch the guest window to 2x or 3x without changing the host operating system's resolution? I saw some stuff online about how you can do this, but it seems to only apply to VMware workstation pro which is like $250 and wouldn't be worth buying just for this.

Hey all, i have had a Buffalo linkstation for a while and recently transferred my games too it. My steam folder now being on it made me wonder if there was a way i could have a Virtual Machine on there so i can constantly keep it updated. But still use the file system as if it were an extra drive on my PC too. That way it utilises my PC's resources for Games etc.

I have set up a work environment in a place that has periodic problems with electricity. I thought of making a VM on a server with RAID1 to prevent dataloss. From my point of view the VM will be software safe due to snapshots and backups and physically the data is relatively secure on RAID1. I look forward to any ideas, recommendations, tips etc Thank you in advance :D

sorry for the bad english. i have a gigabit connection (940mb day1 700mb tested with my laptop port today) my motherboard is msi z170 gaming m5, the lan port is e2400 atheros killer, the cable is cat6, the swicth is gigabit and it always worked. since a bit i found the connection not fast as always. i found my speedtest at 140mb, i tried updating drivers, cleaning the drivers and istalling it from scratch, no luck. then i thought the lan port was broken or something because i tested the same setup with the same cable etc with my laptop and the speedtest was 700mbs , so i ordered a usb 3.0 to gigabit from amazon basics. and the results where the same.... then i tought to test the new sandbox virtual machine with windows 10 1903. and... the results were 400+ mbs.. with the hyper-v virtual ethernet adapter inside the sandbox. both the e2400 and the usb adapter are listed as 1gb links. the duplex is in autonegotiation by default in both. ipv6 is not the problem. i havent found any program that could limit the bandwith like that.. the only one was killer device center but i unistalled it. i need help. its a crazy situation. i really do not want to fresh start windows 10... to recap the cable is good beacause i can get 700+ on my other laptop i tryed resetting netsh etc with no luck the speed inside vm is 450+ and outside is 145 i tried in safe mode, still 145. qos limiter is not the cause, disabling it i only gained -1 or -2 ms of ping with the same speed. i really don't want to nuke the os.

Hi all, Pretty sure this is my first time posting on LTT so first, nice to meet you all! Now that the formalities are out of the way, let's get down to business. For the last what feels like forever, I've been trying to get Hyper-V working for me again. There was a point months ago where I had it installed on my computer but due to disk space issues, I decided to remove the feature and its VMs and drives. Upon purchasing a larger SSD and installing it in my system, I reinstalled Hyper-V. Since then, however, I've been unable to create any virtual switches. Even attempting to open the Virtual Switch Manager results in the following error: I've run sfc/ scannnow and tried restoring the image health with DISM and neither have found any errors in my OS image that would cause this. My computer is an Asus GL752VW. i7-6700HQ, 16GB DDR4 RAM, running Windows 10 Pro Ver. 1803 Build 17134.285. Any chance anyone else has had this issue and might be able to guide me through resolving this? Thanks!

So I was having some trouble setting up a windows VM on unRAID and it looks like a lot of other people have as well so I thought I would give a hand. When installing the VM you need to download Windows ISO Tool then make a bootable device as an ISO on the "isos" folder. Wait for it to get things ready, then use that "windows.iso" file in the "isos" folder when choosing the OS Install ISO and boot the VM. If it sill launches to shell than change the boot manager to use the CD ROM drive and that should boot in to Windows installer. Here is a video I found after way too long: Hope this helps other newbies to unRAID like me.

I want to run a virtual machine in my computer. I have Win8.1Pro, therefore i can use te built in Hyper-V Windows offers. The other option may be to install Oracle's Virtual Box. I want to run OS like Androidx86, Raspbianx86, or even a Linux distro but just for the fun of it or for small proyects. Going for a drive partition may be exagerated for what I want. So... What are your opinions and suggestions about this?
